After journeying to Middle-earth together for the “Lord of the Rings” movies, Cate Blanchett and Ian McKellen are playing more grounded roles in this year’s films. In “Mr. Holmes,” McKellen stars as the famous detective in old age. Blanchett pulls double duty in “Carol,” as a 1950s housewife who falls for a younger woman; and in “Truth,” in which she plays embattled “60 Minutes” producer Mary Mapes. - Розваги
Mithrandir: "when i was 25, i was quite gorgeous, i must say."
Galadriel: "you still are"
I shed a tear in that moment... they're both just so lovely.
I keep getting flashbacks of the added scene they had in the 3rd Hobbit film where Galadriel, Elrond and Saruman came to face the Necromancer (Sauron) to save Gandalf... The moment when Rhadagast the Brown was about to drive away on his sleigh with Gandalf and he reached out and grabbed Galadriel by the hand and said, "Come with me my Lady" because he knew the power Sauron had over the Elven Ring that Galadriel had... That moment was just so beautiful for me...
@@anniex3082 I shed a tear when Sir Ian said, "It was like when we went to Middle Earth, which is were we first met." And they both laughed beautifully.

I thought it was Sir Ian McKellen and Cate Blanchett?
It's like watching a king and queen
+Pokemontas ame tu foto de perfil y nickname, ingenionso.
+Pokemontas YES!.....YEEESSSS!!!!
he played Richard III and she played Queen Elizabeth lol
They could also be excellent teachers I don't know why, but they are so utterly charismatic, I would listen to them for hours.
They both have a very regal and noble quality.
Both of their voices are so calm, so heavenly
and so REGAL, both Richard III & Queen Elizabeth.
heavenly?
No lament here...
@Rosida Andriyana Ian is British, Cate is Australian.
Pau Michelle you could easily enjoy this as a podcast
Cate's voice when Ian says he used to be so gorgeous. The genuine, heartfelt emotion when she says "You still *are* Ian." I felt that in my heart.
*ánd....its true..+*
I think he was sexiest in his 50s
fucking LEGENDS. just FUCKING LEGENDS.
+Chris M i really eel your excitement
+Chris M Dammit Chris! I was gonna say that! xD
+Chris M Absolutely! Total, total jaw dropping, awe inspiring legends!
+Chris M Definitely
+Chris M I KNOW RIGHT ! *dead*
Galadriel and Gandalf reunited. Thank you so much for sharing this. Their chemistry together is absolutely effortless.
It was so moving when Ian talked about dressing up as Gandalf and suddenly finding the character. Even Cate seemed emotional.
There's a great clip of Ian and Patrick Stewart, I think they're answering web questions, where Ian talks a bit about Gandalf and you can sort of see Gandalf come out in his face for a moment, Patrick comments on it as well
Ian McKellen: "I'm terrified of bees, but as it turns out they're absolutely charming" That might be the single greatest thing I will ever hear someone say on a talkshow.
Two of my absolute favorite living actors.
I need at least 3 hours more of this.
On a loop!
SA Chendra I totally agree
I second this motion
SA Chendra motion carries.
Proceed.
3 hours daily... :)
Ian McKellen... 76 years old and sill sharp as ever.
And Cate Blanchett- My God she's sooooo gorgeous
I was marveling at how mindful and intelligent she was, as well.
By gorgeous u mean u would like to have sex with her? Stop stating obvious.
Nizahe Ⓥ That is your assumption not his/her's statement.
The older kate gets the better she looks
Schizm1 she is absolutely breathtaking and Ian is a darling
6:50 Cate's face when Ian ask her about Carol, just priceless ^__^
+Nik Caras u ok?
She can melt a camera with that gaze!
Feminist: Male Gaze!? sexist! sexist! sexist! right here.
@@youtubellc2211 what an insipid comment
@@youtubellc2211 He is gay, this is nothing sexual
Cate Blanchett is a stunner. And I love her response to Ian recalling being gorgeous at 25. "You still are, Ian." What a quick and genuine response. They're both lovely.
Cate Blanchett just seems like such a truly nice person, it's incredible. I bet she could talk with anybody and end up putting a smile on their face.
I met her at the Hobbit premiere in Wellington. She is lovely. And very beautiful
In interviews when they're trying to trip her up, she trips THEM up
she's an actress. they pretend to 'seem' for a living
@@John-tc9gp thats just a bitter sad way of thinking
@@tomasalarconchible9729 Sad but true
16:50 "It's like when I first went to Middle Earth, which is where we met first..." - says is SOOOO casually and passive!!!!! These two are amazing!!!
"Forever nipping around the corner to share a cigarette."
"shhh"
"To share a... line of coke."
LOL.
That was an unintentional slip :D
I'm trying to find where they said this?
nvm I found it :D
@@antheajohnson4234 can you tell me where?

When I die, I want Gandalf and Galadriel to greet me at the gates of heaven. Or hell. Doesnt matter.
Jim S
They won't be at either. They'll be at Valinor.
Brendan Sousa Nerd ;)
Actually they will be in the Grey Havens, out there toward the West!
Hela would greet you at the gates of Hell, if ever you end up there
I've seen a number of these Actors on Actors, and this one is the best. It's less like they're interviewing each other, and more like they're just having a friendly chat and giggle.
I blame them, they made me socially drop out of everywhere
I was fine until they started social manipulate me
Timothy Cole well, they did spend four years together from 1999 to 2003.
Yes it is a really natural conversation
"they were ABsolutely charming!"
"The bees?"
"Yes"
WIN
That was incredibly endearing!
They need to hurry up and make some immortality pill or machine, JUST SOMETHING! Ian mckellen must not ever die!
But if he does he'll just come back as a more powerful version of himself.
sirK eeGcM he just died btw
Yes, but as Jim S says, it's because he will be meeting people at the gates of heaven. Though, I hope he doesn't say to me "YOU SHALL NOT PASS"....love Sir Ian....#bygons
Shi Palabrica Ummmmm..... He's alive.
Make two! We need one for Betty White.
Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep are easily the greatest actresses of our time
Maggie Smith
Julian Walker, I wholeheartedly agree that Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep are the greatest actresses. However, you simply must add Dames Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, and Helen Mirren. All five are superior.
Dont forget amy adams!
Kate Winslet anyone...?
Also Jodie Foster and Sigourney Weaver 👏🏻🔥
Sauron didn't like this.
+jeffrey ryan And Saruman. Cause now the video got 3 dislikes, lol.
+Hillbilly Pig And now, Grima Wormtongue.
+weilien86 (・ˍ・*)whos that?
+Gábor Vág f... them! morrons that have issues
+Gábor Vág 😊😊😊 THANK YOU💋
wow she deflects every compliment to her
+Tamsin Bananas women generally do deflect compliments, but i imagine deflecting is what keeps her humble.
+Tamsin Bananas Sir Ian did as well - maybe not all but certainly a lot of them
"If I'm not good in acting, I'm not good in anything else... I can scramble eggs."
"Well you can't keep bees."
ADORABLE
6:48 I love that naughty look she gives Ian when he asks her about Carol. Cate, you sexy beast! :D
true that! :D
Oooo yes!
Omg, that look.
Two brilliant artists picking each others brains. This is one of the best interviews on acting I have seen. Everything they talk about is just so reaffirming. Pure genius
And so genuine.................
Cate and Ian are seriously one of the very very very top amazing astonishing actors in the entire world.
Cant beat classically trained British Shakespearean actors.
Yes.
@@williamwallace2278 Oh please. Get out of here. They can beat classically trained OVERRATED British Shakespearean actors. You halfwits are stereotypes.
@@williamwallace2278 More like classically trained British OVERRATED actors can't beat Sir Ian and Cate.
"Well you can't keep bees". OMG her comedic timing. I'M GAGGING.
Cate Blanchett is the epitome of class and elegance, she's beautiful!
Her embarrassment over being outed as a smoker was endearing.
+David Adams She should be.
Oh yes lol!! Sir Ian McKellen was shusssshed 😂
Why should she?it's not a crime
David Adams when?
+Coshcosh 20:38
I could listen to them all day.
I love that she still is proud of Rooney for her acting in Carol. For me, it was Rooney’s character that stole the show and she rightfully deserved the Oscar that year, but Cate really manages to embody that classy, upper-class American Carol character. They had such easy chemistry.
My IQ just went up 20 points from watching this video.
6:47 that smirk
I liked that she mentionned the parallel between Blanche Dubois and her character in Blue Jasmine. Woody's denial of it was just ludicrous. And Cate looks so much like Vivien in that movie too.
I listen to this with headphones and yet I find myself leaning in to 'hear' more because the authenticity manifest in this conversation is endlessly engaging and revealing. This is a mesmerising encounter of mutual respect, interest and talent.
Thanks Kevin, glad you went to the trouble of responding. Your commentary and use of the word 'kent' is much appreciated.
I'm leaning in, too. It's like I'm being told a fairy tale, or the secret of the universe.
Beautifully explained and true
"You still are, Ian. You still are."
WHAT AN ANGEL
YES! just YES! everything about it this is YES!
+roter13 moron
+King Steve ?? Well for a moron who so far has 36 Likes on that comment, which echoes most other comments on This video.. One could possibly extrapolate, That You are the "Moron" - not me however, because one can not judge another's intelligence from One enthusiastic comment on a youtube video. can one??
Shadrach Del'Monte Popularity does not mean intelligence. Explain how this video represents the word yes.
***** whatever
King Steve whats obvious misses low intelligence, "yes yes" was expressing how much they enjoyed the video.
Wow the reaction Cate gives after Ian asks about Carol, stunning. I just finished reading about Cate on Wikipedia - what an extraordinary career and person she is. Not Hollywood at all in any sense, yet she is the reigning Queen of it.
Prasanna J you're stupid enough to comment that
Jennifer Lawrence, like Emma Stone, is a movie star. Cate Blanchett, like Meryl Streep, is an ACTOR.
But you said it yourself, Cate Blanchett is not a huge box office draw like Jennifer Lawrence. Jennifer, Emma, Julia, Sandra are all movie stars, they deliver big box office numbers. While Cate, Meryl, Kate W, Tilda are actors, known for their work and artistry. They are more respected and acclaimed than these so called "movie stars".
RVAnne22 Blanchett is both an "actor" and a "movie star" though. She has a lot of $100M grossing films where she's the lead actress.
Xcuze nah I never consider LOTR/Hobbit a CB film since she was only on screen for like 5 mins lol Cinderella was different though, the two "leads" were relatively unknown, that's why Cate got top billing over Lily and Richard. But yes you're right, JLaw is a bigger BO draw bc she's young + bigger celebrity while Cate is older + very private person
I'm really enjoying Ian's endearing uneasiness and Cate's warm sarcasm. Even as themselves, we can see so much of the rich texture of their personhood.
5:57 "... I had to work with bees, but they were absolutely charming"
I think those bee's recognized their queen ;)
Cate Blanchett--Long may she reign!
it feels like there is no camera, just an honest conversation between two people who respect each other.
I disagree, two people exchanging pleasantries and hyping each other , it seems rather phony to me.
they're ridiculously humble !! you're both GREAT actors you have to accept it. lol :)
I could listen to Ian speak all day
Gandalf and Galadriel just chillin
20:35-20:45 LMAO I literally laughed out loud. I could listen to these two all day.
Ian Mckellen sounds so graceful and interesting, we need more souls like this in the World
I feel sophisticated and intelligent just watching them, such a grace and calmness radiating from them two, almost mesmerizing
So this is what Mithrandir and Lady Galadriel are like behind closed doors? Cool. LOL!!!
This is a brilliant idea! Have professionals talk to other professionals! Every word is utterly fascinating... it feels like you're eavesdropping on a quiet evening between friends.
It's amazing to be able to see these two giants, these two theatre-passionate actors, talking and sharing their limitations and their love for what they do. It's heart-warming.
two of the finest actors ever. It was genius to cast them in TLOTR. Ian Mc Kellen deserved the academy awards for his impersonation of Gandalf, hands down. One of the best acting performance ever.
I love this legendary duo. However, my love for cate blanchett is unparalleled, just as she is.
couldn't agree more :)
I was thinking how nice it is to be gay and interview her without sexual tension. But then again Im simply too sexy.
Her voice is enchanting
Omg
Cate has the most captivating eyes ❤❤
"you still are Ian" they're so lovely to observe. Such a neat friendship
They are completely in another level and I love it.
Perfect together, what a charming man he is! Class 100% for both of them.
"Well, you can't keep bees".
I love her so much...
He has such a lovely way with her. I think they are both underselling eachother because they are tremendous actors. But through their humbleness they feel they are never good enough. It's a good thing it's to others to really see how good they are.
That suit she's wearing is immaculate.
Cate Blanchett is a legend. And it was priceless at 14:17 , how humble of herself she is.
The bit starting at ~13ish minutes feels so personal and unbelievable at the same time.
Two legends feeling so self-aware and vulnerable.
Oh my lord. They both exude a calmness about them that is very relaxing and comforting. Listening to them converse is almost like meditation.
10:44 this gave me goosebumps... such a lovely interaction. I love those two so much. ♥
i would die to see cate blanchett and ian mckellen on stage together
If he was a little younger or she was a little older they'd be great in The Lion in Winter
They both speak so beautifully..... could hear them forever. Brilliant actors
I love their chemistry together. It translates so well on screen, like they have so much admiration for each other and their work
"you never grow too old to play...you grow old when you stop playing..." George Bernard Shaw - McKellen reminds me of this quote and how he lives...
No one seems to appreciate how great Ian McKellen is with moving his hands.
Hes a wonderful actor
The Cate blanchet's expression when Sir Ian asks, "But now tell me about Carol"
i'd love to see gandalf and galadriel having a cigarette together in full costume....i have a need
they lie on the floor in each other's arms right in their characters' outfits behind the scenes of LoTR. you'll be pleased to see it
Oh no....heartbreak.....Cate is a smoker :-( *end of crush fantasy*
Влад Григорьев Inthe 2 or 3 hobbit actually. It’s so funny. Extended versions
@@BeachBushandBeyond she seemed embarrassed by it, so I doubt she does anymore
Or coke as I suggested... my god the magic
Compared to Late Show interviews this was amazing. Calm and sensitive giving the other side its time to develop an answer. Thank you for this jewel.
im crying. seeing them talking is beautiful!!
10:43 is the tone and voice that will melt everyone's heart
i don't believe it when someone says a complements it feels fake. but Cate's complements to Ian are just beautiful.
The elegance they carry is beautiful
This is such a wonderful program...and this is one of the nicest couple to see interviewing each other....I cannot get enough of Cate Blanchett
cate is godly beautiful
It's remarkable how you can see Cate Blanchett's intelligence in the movements of her face. Isn't that weird? That makes her so stunningly beautiful and a delight to watch.
What? it is called acting and knowing how to look your best for the CAMERA. Actors know the best angle, lighting, and how to hold their face to appear most attractive. Models can do it as well.
A LINE OF COKE HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
They are really into each others craft.
This is entirely wonderful, but while 11:10 is touching and profound, Cate capped it with such a hilarious callback - "Well, and you can't keep bees". 😂 I love them both so much. ❤❤❤
Putting these two together for Actors on Actors was brilliant. Big love.
Delicious chemistry! Mr McKellen is just adorable in this two-way interview with Cate Blanchett. If you haven't yet seen 'Carol', you're in for a real treat; certainly Blanchett's most focused performance to date.
Palette london loved her role of the gentle lover in Carol. XD she seems like a good kisser too. ^3^ loved that movie.
I’ll have to check it out. I adore Cate. She was wonderful in Elizabeth.
I love the way she says 'let's do it on stage' when they are talking about working together. They both must love theatre work more than film.
Sir Ian's socks are legendary
Omg this could be 3 hours and I'd watch every minute of it
I can listen to them both talking all day. Love the way they think too. Not to forget I love Cate Blanchett's sense of style, very classy and effortless. Ian McKellen looks classy too, as always ;)
two great actors.
two of the best.
Ivo gustavo love cate
吴艳 i do too.
She's pretty good and very friendly.
why was this only recommended to me now? By the Valar.
this is more precious to me than the gems of Silmarillion
great energy between them...electric..cate is so intelligent
these people make me fall in love even more with the film industry
I really love the way they carry themselves. Its so different from what we see in the mainstream of people. Theyre very grounded, calm, respectful of each other. Seeing actors like this gets me excited to age ❤
honestly you all should be on your knees right now and genuflect and praise those legends, a totally royalty of acting
These two are so amazing together! Two great actors
I've watched this interview three times and I still am not tired of it. Their conversation is effortless and they really seem to adore each other.
"They're busy aren't they, bees."
A sentence I never thought I'd hear Ian McKellen say but I loved it :)
OMG BLANCHETT MCKELLEN
(BEADS? -BEES! -BEES? ...They don't allow bees in here.)
I love them both soooo much, what a pleasure to watch.
king and queen
+22zooley - Not quite...Queen and near split-Queen.
