The reason it seems disjointed is because its supposed to represent upper and lower classes in wartime. The lower class has a chaotic time during war where the upper class profits and grooves during times of war. Hence the lyrics

The prechorus/ chorus suck you in like a groovy party we all get behind...Then BAM, this is the hardcore truth and chaos of war. The abrupt changes aren't just musical transitions, but a statement. I love when artists are multi leveled. One of my favorite examples is the fast machine gun riff in Metallica's ONE. Awesome channel...can you revisit Slayer? Angel of Death.

It's hard to simplify SOAD lyrics and songs, but... This is how I would sum up the contrast in sound and lyrics...
Chaotic/Loud Vocals: Lower Class reaction to war and what it causes.
Smooth/Settled Vocals: Upper Class ignorance and reaction to war and what it causes.
The biggest lyric being, "why do they always send the poor?" Insinuating (correctly) that the rich always send the poor and less fortunate to go fight their (upper class) wars. So, while the poor are sacrificing or risking their lives, the rich live it up and act ignorantly and without a care to the results of war.

You two listening to this song is like throwing two cheetahs into a tar pit and saying "run". This is a tough song and SOAD were definitely "different". I liked your breakdown especially talking about the sarcasm, but it's also a very angry song and they are expressing the insanity of war and politics with insane chord and tempo changes and screams. Their guitarist / co-vocalist is a big Slayer fan, and he blends Slayer's fast and aggressive guitar playing style with more exotic/foreign influences that are likely linked to the bands Armenian background. The other vocalist, Serj, is much more of an operatic vocalist. Both are very political and anti-war. They're very vocal about the Armenian genocide.

    • @thepiratecats801

The name, System of a Down, comes from the Ottoman (now Turkey) genocide mentioned by Jesse. On their first album the song P.L.U.C.K is all about the genocide. FYI, PLUCK stands for Politically Lying, Unholy, Cowardly Killers. Such a good band.

This can be interpreted many ways as is the style of SOAD but it's clear that the perpetrator of such events was inclined to have as many join them as possible.

Great to hear you giving it more listens George! I find it extremely rewarding to give songs that you at first have a hard time with due to their complexity and getting another listens to sunk it all in, afterwards these are usually the songs that holds up the best. Cathcy songs are always nice to listen to, but they usually lack the depth and creativity that keeps you coming back to it every year.
Then System of a Down is a of course a very special band with these CRAZY transistions that you can't believe they are doing, but they are really incredible tbh. One thing to keep in mind with this song is that it was the first full song on the first of a pair of albums. It is basically a mission statement for what the band was bringing this time. It's disjointed, swinging suddenly from melodic to unrelenting aggression, and don't expect the rest of the experience to be any different. You never know what to expect, or when to expect it.

Guys, the reason I LOVE your channel is because I believe EVERY review is HONEST. I thought ya'll would really like this one. I was pretty surprised of the reaction but I always enjoy your takes whether I agree or disagree. System of a Down is DEFINITELY not for everyone even if they have some catchy hooks...........they are "out there". I happen to love it. But that's just me. Love the channel. Love the honesty. I dig the new format, boys! Even if the reaction half gets demonitized, y'all still gettin value. I think you might be able to trick the YT game a little, if y'all can guarantee 20mins of content per song, edit the reviews to be the longer ones, specifically more than 10mins, so y'all can optimize that ad revenue. Correct me if I'm off base, but I've seen several content creators offhandedly mention that 10mins is the goal.

Daron Malakian said about the song in an interview with MTV:
"[The band was concerned about releasing “B.Y.O.B.”] because we’ve been pegged as such a political band, and it’s something we’ve been trying to shy away from so people will understand the different aspects of the band.
I don’t see it as a political song. The lyrics sing, ‘Why don’t presidents fight the war?/Why do they always send the poor?’ but that’s not a thought to politics or anything else. That’s just a viewpoint. That’s just a question. And I think, more than politics, we try to spark questions that the powers that be don’t want you to ask. It’s more about a social commentary. I think it’s about a few different things as opposed to being pointed at one thing."

You still claim to be ‘outsiders’ to the metal genre. But after watching you for well over a year now ( I think I subscribed around 10000), you know as much or often more than many metal heads. You aren’t really outside anymore.
Doesn’t take anything away from my appreciation for your work.
