Since you seemed kind of surprised by Serj wearing an Armenian Genocide shirt, you should know that every member of SOAD are of Armenian heritage and are very vocal about the Armenian genocide. Keep that in the back of your head whenever you hear them playing songs about the injustice of war or governmental abuses.

This is written in the booklet of the disc, before the War lyrics: "We first fought the heathens in the name of religion, then communism, and now in the name of drugs and terrorism. Our excuses for global domination always change"
2 phrases really stand out if you are thinking about that
Who victored over the Seljuks when the holy land was taken?
Was it the reaches of the land, powers of bright darkness, that lead the nobles to the East to fight the heathens?
This, for me, is more about how the united states are financing this recent conflicts, and how the propaganda always changes to justify war, when it is pretty clear the united states have something to gain financially. This ties this song to a whole bunch of other system songs.

    • @YaBoyRascal

Idk of you'll see this, but I see this song being able to be used in any situation regarding war most prominently 9/11 for me. The U.S. going to the middle east to fight the "heathens" when the holy land (WTC) was taken

    • @StraightOuttaCrofton
      @StraightOuttaCrofton 29 днів тому

Except that if you're aware of Armenian history, this has an entirely different connotation, particularly in relation to the Seljuk Turks and their arrival in a land which had long been the political football of Greek/Roman Empire to the West and a Persian Empire to the Southeast as those empires began to crumble in the face of new powers from the South and East. Not to mention the later Ottoman Turks and CUP ("Young Turks") and their actions against their Christian ethnic minorities of Armenians, Syrian Christians and Greeks, particularly in the period between 1915 and 1923...
I'm afraid @MrLboyd Reacts is a little off on his history too: in this case I think the combined Georgian, Armenian and Crusader armies are the ones who "victored over the Seljuks when the Holy Land was taken", although given the fluctuations of that part of the world from the 7th century onwards, this is an easy mistake to make! Really admire the channel and the open-minded approach to music, please don't take my constructive criticism as an insult.

I always thought they were refering to the first crusade, when they said "who victored over the seljuks" which would also explain the "we will fight the heathens" The shiite Fatamids and the sunni Seljuks wouldn't exactly see each other as heathens, for they both follow a branch of Islam (they would see each other as heretical). The catholic crusaders however would definitely see the Seljuks as heathens (basically the whole reason the crusades happened)

Not sure you read the comments but the Iberian Peninsula was indeed (mostly) under Moorish rule for hundreds of years - from the 8th century onwards. The Moors were eventually defeated during the Reconquista; the rule (although severely weakened by then) finally ended in Portugal during the mid-1200s and in Spain during the 1490s. As you can imagine, the Muslim legacy is very comprehensive! Not sure where in Spain you live but Alhambra, the Royal Alcazar in Sevilla, and the Cordoba Cathedral are all places I'm sure you'd really enjoy visiting. They are great examples of medieval Muslim architecture and historically very rich.

the Seljuks defeated the Fatimids in the Holy Land just prior to the Crusades, the Saracens of Saladin are Seljuk. Serg is referring to the Armenian defeat of the Seljuks Turks in Armenian during the time of the Crusade and shortly before the Mongols conquered the Seljuks and Armenians and all of who were finally conquered by the Ottoman Turks who eventually committed the Genocide against the Armenians

It's pretty clear that this song is about the inhumanity of using religion as an excuse to commit atrocities and how easy it is to dehumanise the victims as heathens to excuse acts of cruelty against them.
The Seljuks line is intriguing though and raises lots of questions.
All 4 members of SOAD are Armenian-Americans. It is likely that the reason they are so interested in politics and issues of human rights is influenced by feelings of anger and sadness at the genocide committed against their people by the Ottoman Empire (now Turkey) in 1915 (and the general acceptance/ignorance of this by the wider global community.)
The Seljuks empire was arguable the birth of Turkic power in the region and a major military force representing what would later become Turkey. However even they suffered devastation at the hands of the Fatamids, a North African Muslim group who had aligned themselves with the Crusading European Christians.
There are so many wars and massacres throughout the middle east and surrounding areas which could have been used metaphorically within this song so I wonder why this one was chosen. Armenia is a majority Christian country surrounded by majority Muslim neighbours. It's interesting that they chose an example of a Christian-allied group committing a massacre of a powerful Turkish enemy. It feels to me that while the band are criticising how easy it is to use religion or nationalism to excuse acts of violence that they are also showing that they themselves are not above getting caught up in the emotive power of fantasising about committing acts of violence against those they see as their oppressors. (e.g. "Who victored over the Seljuks when the holy land was taken?" could be something an Armenian nationalist could shout to help inspire acts of violent revenge against Turkey. This is something the band no doubt relate to, but yet are still criticising in the song as no act of violence can be justified based on merely patriotism or faith.)
Anyway, that's just my thoughts. I might be totally wrong.

Someday you gotta do a song from The black dahlia murder! A decent amount harder, you’ll need lyrics for sure but I feel musically and lyrically you’ll get hooked on them. Songs like Sunless Empire, Widowmaker, Matriarch, Kings of the night world, A shrine to madness are all fire

This is the Album version of this song, I'd put money down that most people who have heard this song or are a fan of this band have only heard this version. That's completely understandable because the original version didn't have a massive release until UA-cam happened and SOAD released it on their channel, plus there is only a 37 second difference which happens in the beginning. Personally I like the original more, the song as it is frames the story well enough but the original frames the meaning right away jolts you awake with the repetition "freedom is only available through death" and then "praise the lord! pass the ammunition! God wants you to go to War"

That would be a great one for a history lesson. Just the sample Debris used is a hidden stroke of genius- "2010" by Tinkerbell's Fairydust. Most appropriate use of a sample can think of. God I love them.
It sucks the label's pretty much defunct, but parenting happens. The Golden Era mixtapes will never leave my car.

The caliphate did not have to do with Seljuks I think. Seljuks went to Anatolia in 11-12 century. And i thunk didnt go there. They were destroyed by the Huns.
The caliphate conquered from Byzantime Empire, which after a bug war with Persia, had bith states weakened.

Sunni and Shia is what divide Islam. Fatima was the youngest only recognized daughter of Muhammad, is about on par to Jesus mother Mary to Muslims. Spain and Portugal with parts of Italy were at on point under Muslim rule, the Moors, which were largely Berber. Berber is largely defined by North African coast regions like Moracco along the Mediterranean Sea but not Egypt. Fascinating history to be read learned from before then and afterwards..

Since we've got a band that (ahem) seems to have an opinion on what went down between one Turkish empire (Ottomans) and the Armenians and now references another Turkic empire (Seljuk) as being on the receiving end.... I went ahead with an uneducated googling of the relationship between the Seljuks and the Armenians and got the following: ********Seljukian Turks showed Armenians as well as the other non-Muslim subjects, the tolerance, which had not been shown by the Byzantine Empire and ensured them that he will protect their religion and social lives. This tolerance continued in the period of Anatolian Seljuk Empire as well. In spite of all the tolerance shown to them, it is also known that Armenians sometimes supported to the Byzantine Empire and also, at the time of the Crusades, they reinforced the Crusade Armies.
REFERENCE: Yildirim, Dr.Hüsamettin, Ermeni Iddialari ve Gerçekler, Ankara, 2000.****** --- Don't know how reliable the info is but it is definitely interesting. That's my two cents.

My favorite track on the first album! I saw the open for Redman and Limp Bizkit back in 2000. They and Redman stole the show. Also system of a Down are Armenians. The Genocide has been one of their biggest political motivations in their music.
