    I would love to see a video of the "clean up". No one ever shows exactly what they do to clean up afterwards. After pouring the lye do you rinse the lye bucket out or do you let it sit till the next day like you do the containers that had soap, etc...? Would love a DETAILED explanation of clean up. Thanks.. love your videos!

      I tend to rinse my dishes out in the sink with hot water right after I've made the soap and my gloves are still on. Then I put them in the dishwasher :) easy cleanup!

    • @JenSpice
      @JenSpice 6 років тому +9

      If I want all those scrapy bits for other projects (sprinkles, etc) then I'll leave them overnight and then finish scraping them out. Lye buckets get rinsed right away as I'm working. If I don't want to or have scraped everything well I'll just wipe it all down with paper towels (glove still on) which makes cleanup easier. Rinse the bowls, etc with hot water (no soap really to worry about clogging the sink) and I'm done. Of course then you need to wash down the kitchen area (I wash the floors, counters, cupboards--often as I'm a bit of a messy soaper at times). What do you do Katie? Great question craftyrat!

    If this is for the academy, can you demonstrate how to properly masterbatch oils and/or lye? How about a complete start to finish of a simple batch of soap including safety precautions and reasons, weighing oils, temperature differences and importance, etc. I guess the more technical side of things. How about education on oil properties and recipe making?

    A cheap tool that might help with the creasing and folding is bookbinding tool called a "Bone folder". They're normally made of plastic now, and are a good tool for putting nice folds into paper. It has a rounded end, a softly pointed end, and a good flat side that can all be used to help fold things around.

    I do not make soap, though excellent video as always. You mentioned what you might do if you don't have fingernails. A pen was an excellent suggestion, but even if this is more information than anyone wanted to know on the subject, as a habitual biter with 25 years of experience I felt obligated to share an alternative. Hair clips are surprisingly versatile and fingernail-esque. The thin metal, slightly curved, teardrop shaped kind. I've been using them in my hair every day as it is in an awkward grow-out phase, so I always have an extra one around. That's how I discovered that they are perfectly suited for all kinds of fingernail tasks such as scraping, prying, picking, and yes, folding. I used one to get the end of tape off the roll and it was so easy I imagined for a moment how nice it would be to stop biting my nails, but it passed. I hope that helps someone out there who is fingernail deficient.

    • @rachelpuckeridge6938
      @rachelpuckeridge6938 6 років тому +1

      middleC17 That’s a good tip! I used to bite my nails but then I had acrylics done when I was 19. I’m 30 now! I’ve never gone back! It’s a foolproof way to stop biting your nails. By the time I had the acrylics off for the first time (probably a year later) for around a week, the habit was gone. I found I was even less likely to chew on my acrylics because every time I did, I thought about how much they cost and what sacrifice I had to make to pay for them! You’ll be surprised how quickly you loose the habit! Just make sure if you do decide to have them done, that you go to a reputable salon and ensure their system and salon itself is clean. As long as that’s all in order, there is absolutely NO danger with them. My nails are as strong with acrylics as without. If you take care of them and the salon tech knows what they’re doing, there won’t be any problems! Long winded reply - but just thought I’d share my experience with you!

    This was really useful even for people who don't make soap, because the principle is the same for lining a baking dish! I've been using parchment paper whenever I make brownies because the cutting and clean-up are so much easier when you can just pull the entire thing out of the pan, but the corners have always been a bit wonky. I'm definitely going to try the "snip until the edge of the box" trick.

    I'd love to see a video on how you prepare your colorants... especially titanium dioxide, what ratios you mix and where you purchase yours!
    Btw, I absolutely loved this video, I didn't think I'd learn so much!

    This is so helpful! I really did struggle following a lot of soap lining tutorials. I'd love a tutorial on how you melt all your oils, I seem to spend ages putting tiny bits of coconut oil and shea butter in jugs and melting them in the microwave - takes ages

      TheUglyBookling YES GIRL! I can absolutely do this! When you make small batches it does take awhile but there are a few ways to make it a little quicker.

    Thank you for this, Katie. My husband is about to make me a new mold, and I was worried about how I would line it without silicone. Whenever I've tried to use freezer paper in the past, I always ended up cutting it wrong and throwing so much scraps away. Hopefully, this will help me not waste so much freezer paper anymore!
