    That shaded contour....is really nice to be on. I had multiple problems with sketch not being fully closed and the shaded contour helped. Nice video Toby! Keep up the good work! Thanks

      That’s cool and good to know 😀 - another comment said you can hold T to avoid that issue I was describing for crossing select - good stuff!

    I've been using this type of software for twenty years plus. I got my start in Inventor, but now I'm in Solidworks exclusively, and like you, I leave all three off. They have value, but often are not very conducive to my old school mindset.

      Nice - yeah all three OFF is my default - just occasionally usage - A tool for every job :-)

    today i learned! also, if you press the T key on your keyboard you can window select inside a shaded area as if the shaded sketch contours button is off. i have no idea what the T stands for or how it works but it does.

      Oh wow that’s awesome- I did not know that! Thanks 😊 I wonder if it’s T for Toby?

    Thank you for this explanation. I have all 3 turned off, but what's nice is that now I know how to use them, before I just knew what was causing me issues and found out how to turn off the problem. I love your tips and explanations keep them coming Toby!

    Totally agree with you on those settings preferences, and yes, probably because I'm a fellow old schooler (yikes, my CSWE cert is almost a teenager). That said, I really appreciate how you break down the topics in your videos and show people the pros/cons to "fully define" (every time 😁) the problems, so users can make an informed preference for themselves. Thanks for all you do for the community, Toby! Hope you're doing well, brother.

    I did not know that the dimensions were not getting deleted because of the instant 2D feature. Saved a lot of future curses on why it just won't delete the dimension. That's a great feature to know! Thanks Toby!

    I currently have all 3 of those settings turned on. I actually didn't know you can turn off shaded sketch contours, might try that. Sometimes the instant 3D does get in the way, but I use the benefits quite often.

    • @TooTallToby

      Agreed - sometimes they are all helpful …. Except instant 2d 😀

    My mind exploded when I pushed boss extrude into a cut extrude on a fresh SolidWorks install. I was like “oh wow, cool, how can I never do that again.” Silly little accidental interactions like that make me think that SolidWorks would be such a better program if they thought more about the user interactions and made workflows intentional and intuitive. I do advanced surfacing of some wildly complex products and been using SW for 15 years. I still think the UX is garbage you just have to learn what not to do as much as what to do. The only program with a harder learning curve is Autodesk Alias but at least once you understand the feature set and methodology it’s consistent.

    If you have instant 2d or 3d enabled, ctrl z is your friend.
    My most annoying default setting in solidworks is the slow rotate view. Anything that slows down me getting the job done is turned off! One thing that always gets turned on is the add dimensions if entered during sketching.

    I like having the shaded sketch contour on. I was having issues deleting dimensions for a while, I thought it was something solidwork's updated. I had instant 2d turned on and didn't even notice it till I watched this video and the behavior you talked about.

    Great Tutorial, Toby! Thank You! Wondering how you do your screen with the titleblock across the bottom (e.g. "SETTING 3: SHADED SKETCH CONTOURS" @8:10 for instance)

    I like to add equations to dimensions as a way of showing design intent. Instant 2D/3D makes this harder to do.

    instant 2d is good for being able to see the changes gradually and the effect changing a dimension will have to the rest of the drawing if its not yet fully defined. (dragging)
    Same for 3d actually.

    I accidentally discovered that holding ALT and clicking allows you to select a contour region while the shaded contour setting is disabled.

    I always turn these off, I’ll turn on shade sketch boundary I really can’t find a gap in a sketch but there’s probably bigger problems with that sketch at that point. I also map my own hot keys and I adjust all the colors to a pink, magenta & orange themes and make open surface edges red.

    • @TooTallToby
      @TooTallToby  4 місяці тому +2

      remember for "sketch gaps" you can also use CHECK SKETCH FOR FEATURE - this will show you an opening in the sketch

    Thanks Toby, instant 2d was lead me to crazy because I made a transition from SW2014 to SW2021 and every time I tried to remove or edit dimension by double clicks it was nightmare 😥

    Hello,i have an issue and maybe you can give an advice on it : i cannot do operations in the dimension textbox,for example 50-12 mm . it gives me an error '' Please enter a number greater than or equal to...'' . what should i do?

    • @TooTallToby
      @TooTallToby  4 місяці тому +1

      Turn off instant2D and instant3D - if the box with the dimension says MODIFY then you should be able to enter basic arithmetic. if it still doenst work, let us know what error you are getting.

    What happens if you change the name of the cut extrude and then use the instant 3D on it?

    • @TooTallToby
      @TooTallToby  4 місяці тому +1
