    3 tries to get this one correct in OnShape. I mistyped 2 dimensions and took forever to find them. Gave up on the rib feature; instead I cut a 1/4 inch wide super-thin slice from the circular boss where the rib needs to go and then sketched a triangle and extruded it to make the rib. I'm sure there's a better way.

    • @kenhaley4
      @kenhaley4 День тому

      I made a copy of the workspace and this time I created the rib by ending the slanted line .015 in below the top of the cylindrical boss. Now the rib worked.

    1202g in OnShape...about an hour! 😝 Took 2 tries (misplaced dimension first time). I thought the hardest thing about this one was aligning the elements of the 2D drawings to the 3D model and keeping that in my head long enough to get the sketches correct. Another lesson learned: If you're going to use a loft, get it done as early as possible. Lofts don't like anything in the way.

    .777 lb in OnShape. (about 45 minutes, I think) To do this one, I finally figured out I had to create 2 additional planes (after solving the first challenge of placing the base line for the tombstone shape on the base). Is there a better way to do this without 2 additional planes? Great exercise as usual! Thanks, Toby.

    1996.007g OnShape. First try (patting self on back)! But still..took way too long. Delete-face came in handy to take away the protuding part of the sloped extrude at the bottom.

    627.367 in OnShape. Pretty challenging for me (only 2.5 months using OnShape). Didn't know about using guidelines for the loft...that was fun to discover. Every one of these models creates another challenge or two. I used the hole feature for the 7mm hole in the bottom jaw, which meant a bit of arithmetic and trial and error to get the depth right. I should have used a sketch/revolve to create that hole.

    That was a great tutorial, I first tried it myself with some more complicated sketches (e.g. I did not use the slot tool) and I ended up with 1590g. Then I followed your tutorial more closely and I realised that made a mistake when designing the slots manually. Changing the diameter from 6mm to radius of 6mm, I got the mass spot on! Many thanks!

    Very nice tip! I noticed some wonky behavior, though. I drew the tombstone and split the arc, made the points horizontal like you did, and put the dimension on there and changed it to 60 degrees, picking the points in the same order. When I chose other points on the arc in the same order, it dimensioned to 120 degrees instead of the expected 60 degree driven dimension. Lots of errors and odd behavior later I tried another sketch, with just points to eliminate any of the possible sketch issues, and it works, but when you choose the three points, the first point you choose is the center point, but that worked every time. For some reason I only sometimes got your result picking the same points in the same order...?

    • @TooTallToby
      @TooTallToby 4 дні тому

    At 8:15, Mr Jon Hirschtick comments 'Whew what a match'. I believe that's the same Mr Jon Hirschtick, the the original Founder and CEO of Solidworks and also Onshape as well it seems. His picture looks very similar ( actually identical) to the Wikipedia photo's. Well, how about that guys - THE CAD GOD is truly keeping an eye on his subjects (haha).

    Its great to see how this model is created, especially in OnShape, although as what appears to be a folded metal shape, I was expecting all of it to be made with sheet metal tools, in particular I was hoping to see how the `dimple` is pressed into the disk. I was not expecting it to be a rotated shape, and I feel kinda cheated by this. There must be a way of pressing the dimple into sheet metal. TTT? Anybody?

    • @timheeney2060
      @timheeney2060 4 дні тому

      Programmers will use standard geometry creation tools despite what the actual manufacturing method may use. A rotated curve is a very established way to create a partial spherical shape - don't feel 'cheated'. In solids we also have the creation of full spheres. So the dish could have been made with a sphere, then split, then another smaller sphere removed from it to make the complete dish shape. The flange around it would have complicated matters though.

    • @TooTallToby
      @TooTallToby 4 дні тому

      Sure you could “press” that dimple in, using a sheet metal form tool
