    Joygasm! Thanks (again) so much for doing these videos, Feng. I've been doing freelance for the film and game industry for nearly 2 years now and I still get a huge amount of information and inspiration out of your videos. I'm now pushing myself to become a much more well-rounded artist instead of just sticking with my comfort zone and your words have really helped to give my mind the paradigm shift it needed.

    Mr. Zhu's actually correct, true professionals should be able to draw anything, doesn't matter what genre. Sci-fi, horror, fantasy, 'realistic', etc. Vehicles or people or buildings, again doesn't matter. If you understand structure, if you understand value and composition, then you should be able to draw anything.

    I'm not actually what people calls a professionnel, but i think i can teach you one thing. Talent is about: 10% of natural predispositions and 90% of work. If you dont have the 10% nothing stops you to get the other 90%. In my opinion, the three more important skills to improve your level are: passion, patience and relentlessness. I personnaly have a lot of work to do, but i wish you the best !!

    @RisingDampChamp it's not like drawing on paper, but is pretty similar. it'll probably feel weird at first, but give it some time to get used to. it can be just as fun and rewarding as drawing with pen and paper.

  • @kenanj100
    @kenanj100 13 років тому

    @RisingDampChamp if u can draw on paper, u can draw on a tablet. it just takes a couple of hrs to get adjusted to, a matter of fact after a while it becomes easier especially if you've been drawing for over 15yrs....my personal opinion

    I agree that every form has those basic shapes. You should teach fractal geometry, like the Mendelbrot Set. Using fractals has helped my paintings especially with nature.

    You just create a new document with, say, width: 3000 pixels and height: 5000 pixels.
    Does not matter, as long as you height has place for three three different paintings (you can allways res it up later). Then you just need to paint in the black frame with a hard brush. Feng mentioned this in some other video -no fancy photoshop stuff, just a big canvas with a handpainted black frame.
    Hope this answers your question :)

  • @ubah
    @ubah 11 років тому

    In the first half part of the video, he painted all the pictures in black and white because he is figuring out the values and then he painted in colour on a different layer. There are two layers: one in colour and another one in black and white (value). Value is important in concept art design. Colour is secondary to values. If you want to learn more about values, and colour, google colour theory and do a bit of reading on it. It's simple, really. I hope this helps. Ask me anything if you like.

    Hey I love Samael clayman comment. Some people have the talent and they just do it but people like Feng Zhu I believe he has a talent but he did say he spent 7 years doing traditional drawings. So I bet someone who has no talent but spend his time of passion, confidence and resilient for 7 years, you 'll get your dream but it still the begginning.

  • @bratz2
    @bratz2 13 років тому

    I agree that the fundamentals are the same for any subject but we are also here to be inspired and different subject matter inspires you at times. I like seeing all of the different subjects and like working with different subjects. You do need variety to inspire though. We wouldn't want to see you only do characters even though it's the same basic principles. I get the point you are trying to get across though :)

    hey , i just followed what you did in the video here and its a good lesson, i got a neat picture of a cyfi world , not as awesome as yours obviously but in just 20 or 30 minutes i got it up and running , i often have problems to start out , i also think using a black frame keeps my focus, easier than just using a blank white page. i´m using manga studio as it was cheap , is a little different in how colors work but i used your trick to use the pallette from a picture and thats really a super great efficient! thanx man

    I notice when you switch to black and white, you paint in black and white then you switch back to color, all the painting you did in black and white seems to translate into color. My guess is you set your eye dropper setting to current layer so it picks the colors of only the active layer, so essentially you can paint in color while you have a black and white adjustment layer on top. Is this how you are doing it? Or are you using another magical way of work that technique.

    I don't the that writer comparison really works, generally sci-fi is much different than fantasy, sure a writer could write a genre they don't write, but most likely it would turn out a bit awkward and generic, as they don't know what tropes to avoid.

    Its so he can paint in the tones alot easier and see where it needs to be darker or lighters.. . not sure hows he's doing it though - He could have a copy of the image underneath the colour layer - but has de-saturated it.

    I would also like to know how the B&W layer set up works, I noticed you seemed to almost paint on it- unless Are you just switching the grayscale color channel?
    I never thought about that if so.
    P.S: Keep this stuff up! Its awesome to see some real help in the field!

    Hey Feng,
    Thanks so much for all these tuts, so many useful tips I don't know how else I would have been able to find them out.
    A quick question, when you value check and darken areas with the black 'colour layer' on, how do you know whether your using the right colour, do you colour pick a dark colour before you switch the layer on or is there a trick?
    Im working my way through all your episodes and so far I have 8 pages of priceless information and notes. Again Thanks so much!!
