    Thanks for your video and sharing your lovely flowers. I have the 'Wilson' and have her for almost a year. I got 4 big blooms from her. Her first. I've been keeping her a bit dry between watering as I've read that they don't like to be moist around the roots all the time. Good luck.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  3 роки тому +3

      Hi there! 🤗💐 a very warm welcome to my comments' section! I have not seen you here before, so... thank you so much for being here! 🥰you have the Wilson!! NICE!! That is a guarantee for beautiful big blooms and fragrance 😍it is true that the norm is, they don't like to be moist around the roots all the time. However, I have found that, playing with the set up, it seems the root growth is still vigorous and the orchid is not showing signs of stress. Now, I have to qualify that, and it is possible that the smaller sized blooms are a sign of stress, and this season, I need to see if it has anything to do with the pH in my pot, as they like it more acidic than other orchids I grow. So, I have started to lower the pH that I put into the deposit and next year, we shall see if that worked or, if nothing has changed. I love this orchid, because it blooms for such a long time. Since this video was posted and the first bloom had just opened, now I have almost all the buds open... still waiting for the fragrance though! It has not been warm enough these past weeks, so there is still time, but.... she is very beautiful despite the small blooms. I am so glad to hear that the Wilson is still around! I have not seen that named cultivar here in Europe before. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to share your experience with your Wilson 🌸

    How about a #carecollab to help us beginners keep the faith? I have 36 orchids and not a bloom or spike in sight. It’s disheartening. 😩They’re basically just regular houseplants at this point, grown for their foliage. The biggest lesson I have learned so far is to get mature, flowering orchids so that you know they can do it. I bought too many seedlings and have to wait 3 years for a bloom and some of the blooming ones I bought didn’t bloom well on their first rebloom in my environment. Working through setbacks is also tough when you do the wrong thing and the plant suffers. It’s sofa king frustrating! It would be nice to see how the other #carecollabers get past these obstacles. 😀

      Hi Paige 🤗💐 you make a good point(s)... you have a great knack for doing that 👍🏼😃 I will definitely look into how to structure that kind of a CareCollab, because, I would need to source channels with loads of seedlings and see if they have challenges that would make it feasible to provide the nugget of intel that could be of help, so... let me think about this one, and IF, time is of the essence, and I cannot get my act together in a CareCollab regard, then, let me go through your points and address each of them in a separate video from my perspective. Thank you for the brain food 😅👍🏼 How have you been? I hope that all is well in your part of the world.... wishing you a wonderful Easter, Paige! Thank you so much, also, for watching 😍🌸

At least I get to see your blooms!😍 and you can’t bet how beautiful the leaves are!

      Danni!!! 😫😖💆🏼‍♀️ ... how did I miss you having one?? I feel like an idiot.... I am so sorry! I have added your name to the list for updates, if you want to join... The spikes are very slow to develop, and will stop start stop start, that is why I thought mine would be getting bigger, and then the buds developed, and I thought oh well, they take time to open as well, so, when they were still so small, I thought it would take long for them to open, and then they opened tiny... I don't know! I will tweak it's culture this year to see if that helps a little, but if not, then, as long as it lives, I am happy with what it can give me. Maybe I have a dwarf variety 🤨 😬 Again, my apologies for not having registered that you have one and updating my notes! I am so so sorry... Ok so you know I had to find this after watching todays video about the falling leaves. Mine is growing leaves well but hasn’t bloomed. I’ll try to chill it even though it’s in the area with other phals that bloom easily.
    I also wonder if (now that you’re soaking) you have measured the pH of the leachate? Many of the hydroponic nutrient charts mark 5.8 as a goal to get good absorption. If yours is significantly higher might that be a factor? I’ll leave a quick comment in today/yesterdays video too.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Larry 😍💐 I have not measured the pH of the leachate, no! I will do so on the next soak though... that is an interesting point, because, I soak at 6.7 to get the immediate pH hit on the roots for the supplement soaks, not matter if it was calmag or cal nitrate. If I leave the solution in the reservoir only, then I have it at 5.8 so that the leca does the rest as it wicks.... I think I should be ok with the temperatures to have another soak session within a week... I need to remember this!! Comment screenshot time 😅 thank you for that inspiration... I shall report back! and thank you so much for watching ❤️🌸 hope your day was fabulous 🌸

      Hi 😀💐 I am very shy about asking channels that are that much bigger than me to join in, because I dont want to be accused of using the larger channels' platform to promote my channel... this idea can be quickly misinterpreted for all the wrong reasons, so... if a large channel watches my videos, I always ask for everyone to contact me if they have orchids in common and so far, it would appear, that large channels are not watching me, and if they are, then they are not reaching out. So, yeah... it would have been great to have had him on board. His schilleriana is the Malayan variety, which I believe grows larger than the more commonly available Philippine variety. 🦒🌷🍀!!! We orchid hobbyists always want our plants to do better than the year before which is only fair as the proof of the orchid's health and of our good care. And indeed I have seen schillerianas with such crowded long branching spikes... But not this year, as if the peculiar winter weather conditions have affected their growth no matter indoors heating and grow lights. In spite of all that the athmospheric pressure changes are still there, if it makes sense. Or is it too silly? The thing is, we humans can feel the weather is changing in our bones before it does and that is because of the changing athmospheric pressure. Could it not influence plants as well? There must be a relation of some sort, the only explanation why we all have better success with a particular type of plant in same years which changes from one year to the other.
    Anyway, those blooms are adorable and I beleive she is proud of herself and promising to do better in the years to come 😂. Good luck amiga mia 🤞🤞hope your strategy will give the results you need.
    Mingi mingi hugggssss and a lovely day for you, your daughter and your feather and fur babies 🤩😍🤗🤗🤗

      FFF 🤸🏼‍♀️🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️😍💐 I was hoping that it would get stronger and bloom more prolifically by now, so... yeah... this one gets 'special' treatment to see if it makes a difference. I feel that atmospheric pressure has something to do with how orchids acclimate and it can take several years for some species to be able to 'breathe' when taken out of their natural climates ... I strongly believe that is what happened with my Plectrelminthus caudatus.... it is starting to look better than a year ago, I have now had it over 2 years, and was concerned that it wasn't showing signs of happiness, but, then I got to thinking about it and how I can't breathe properly for a day or 2, when going back to Mombasa, with the high humidity in the air. The reverse is true when orchids leave their 'homes', the stomata cannot breathe or what they breathe is too dry, until they acclimate. That is a huge light bulb moment for me, when I was trying to think of why my caudatus was holding on, but not doing well.... it makes sense to me, so I will roll with that and it will be a factor that I touch on when I do a video on that one. The schilleriana, however.... it was doing well, better last year than the year before, but not this year, so... maybe the vortex did something invisible 😅 flipping vortex! 😆 also... there are 2 different kinds and I have been trying to confirm which one I have, which may help in knowing, if I am expecting something from the variety I have, Philippines and the islands there, or Malaysia! If I have the Philippines variety, then I cannot expect it ever to get long leaves, multiple branching spikes. I think I have the Philippines variety... rarely have I seen the Malaysia silver leaf one here in Europe. Lots of things to consider and it makes a difference when considering results year on year! 🤷🏼‍♀️ We shall see... gotta love this hobby! 🤪 Warm day here today, but cloudy and windy... mañana mucho rain forecasted! Have to do some filming today si o si otherwise I am going to miss some deadlines 🙃 Much love to you, vencina favorita! Have yourself a wonderful day, FFF!! Thank you so much for being here! ❤️🌸

      Hi Sandie! 🤗💐 I watched his video a few years ago, and thought that maybe I do not have his variety... his leaves are much more silver and then I read his blog about his schilleriana and he has the Malaysian variety... so, I believe that to be somewhat harder to come by, as I have not seen anyone in Europe offer this real silver leafed variety... I think mine is from the Philippines, and despite not getting to leaves to be as majestic, the fact that my blooms are smaller this time around, does make me think that it has to do with the pH, or, perhaps that this winter was much colder in my dining room.... I shall tweak and then see what happens this coming season! I am just glad that I still have it, seeing as my indoor temperatures are not what it likes this time of year, add to that my set up.... cold roots ... yeah, a few things to consider as well. I wonder how you are testing the pH? I have a meter that is supposed to test moisture, pH, and light, but the pH function doesn't seems to happen when I insert it into the bark. I have a few new Cattleyea purchases that seem to be turning quite yellow-green in the leaves (a bit mottled), and I don't think it's over watering, but maybe it's too much light? But hearing you talk about pH, has go me wondering about that.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  5 місяців тому +1

      HI Christiane 😍💐 I test the pH of my water only. A pH meter for liquid will not show the value if placed into the substrate. However, there are pH meters that will show the pH in the pot and if you are interested to have a look as to what they look like give google a search with this term 'pH meter for testing pot substrate' and see what comes up in your area. IF I want to test the pH in my pot, I go by way of soaking the pot. I take the pH value of the water before I soak the pot, then soak for 30 minutes, let the water drain and take the pH value again, which will give a good idea of what is going on in the pot. However, that is only an indicator, because, after the soak, the pH will have changed again. Still, if the pH were to drop radically from the first value, then it shows that the pot is very acidic and future nutrient applications will need to be pH'd higher until a repot can be dealt with. As I am in inorganic media, I pretty much 'know' the pH in my pots, because my media is inert and what I put in as a starting pH, will balance it's way through the pot even if it were to go up a little bit. It won't be out of the realm of nutrient absorption. The symptoms of your cattleyas make me lean toward a magnesium deficiency. Too much light would show up as the leaves turning into a yellow/green evenly. Mottling is some form of deficiency. here is a video about yellowing leaves, where you can see what leaves look like when they get too much light ua-cam.com/video/f5WtEs7zyLA/v-deo.html just in case you want to have a comparison. There is no harm in doing an epsom salt soak for your new arrivals. CalMag will also work, but the magnesium in CalMag products is not as concentrated as an epsom salts which is just magnesium and can be dosed in a higher concentration without over doing it. I have a video for how to do a blitz epsom salt soak, but don't want to bombard you with links. So, if you are interested in that video, let me know and I can add a link here 👍🏼 please let me know if there is anything else you might want a second opinion on. Always here for you! HI Crystal 🤩💐very interesting! I have fertilized mine prior to it starting new roots or a leaf at a lower pH than usual... I though that maybe, that would help with a possible need for nutrients that can only be absorbed through a lower pH. For the first 12 weeks of mine growing new roots and almost fully developing its new leaf, the lower leaf held on. But then... quite quickly it dropped the oldest leaf, despite trying to keep it going with lower pH, additional CalMag. So.... I think that, these guys only hold on to x amount of leaves, regardless of what we do. A thought. I have never seen a schilleriana with more than 4 leaves... as long as your's is looking great and growing nicely, I would not worry about it. I have come to the conclusion, after my season with it this year... that is what it does. But for a moment there, I thought I had cracked a code 😬almost 😉 thank you for going back and watching this video, I really appreciate it! I hope that you had a great weekend and wish you a wonderful start to the new week 🤗🌸

      @@NinjaOrchids I’ve been looking at a lot of you tube videos and I haven’t seen 1 with more than four leaves so I think your right.

    My schilleriana blooms just started opening and I was shocked by how small they are, smaller even than yours. I know this is the first blooming for this plant, so I will forgive it. But boy are they pink.
    I'd say that isn't a bad plant to get as a freebie. And I'm there with you on the "how to improve blooming" for next year. I told you about my R. digbyana being a project plant. It is extremely annoying, though, that it gets the exact same care as other plants (better in some cases) but fails to produce in the bloom department while others go bananas. I have the same problem with Phal stuartiana as your schilleriana doing the party trick of dropping a leaf every time it starts growing a new one. I thought I had it licked but, when the new leaf got about half grown, the oldest leaf started shriveling. 🤷‍♀️ I'm going to up the feed overall just a bit but only by adding 30-40 ppm of my CalMag, which will up the N a bit without altering the P and K and see what happens.

      Don Miguel 😍💐 when this one bloomed for me for the first time, the blooms were bigger than they are now 🤷🏼‍♀️ I was not going to get a phal schilleriana, but I guess the universe thought otherwise. I was going to send her back... that is how much I was not going to have a schilleriana... 😆 if they say keep it, ... I didn't have anyone here in the area that would take it, because they wouldn't know what to do if they tried. Now, I have no plans of giving it away, but I would like to see if it going to be a better blooming next year. Here is the thing, I believe I have the Philippine variety, not the Malaysian one. So, if that is the case, then, it will not grow to be a long leafed plant, no matter how many years I have it. But the blooms, they are not the right size... so... we tweak! 😏 I like the addition of CalMag... I had not thought of that! Drop the ph further and add CalMag... 👍🏼we shall see. You with your digbyana, and me with the schilleriana. Tiny blooms are cute, but not when they should be bigger! 😒 have a wonderful day, Señor! I have to hustle to film today... going to rain tomorrow, so... I will miss deadlines, if I do not get moving! Thank you so much for watching, Michael! I really appreciate it! ❤️🌸
