- Today we continue out maintenance tour, which was long due and save the Phalaenopsis schilleriana's keiki!
🦋 More info below! 🦋
Phalaenopsis schilleriana is a very beautiful and popular orchid, not only for her flowers, but for the foliage as well. See this orchid in bloom here • Orchid family portrait...
Over the past more than a year, the leaves started to shrivel and fall, although no other signs of problems were displayed. The root system looks good and, after today, I am pretty sure this isn't a case of crown, or stem rot.
Removing a basal keiki from a Phalaenopsis is sometimes very difficult, so today I opted to just remove the top stem of the mother plant. Here is a different case where the keiki was easily separated • Orchid propagation - S...

Looking forward to seeing the evolution! Hopefully this keiki will develop well. 2 weeks ago I repotted my bellina, it was in bloom but its sphagnum moss looked ugly, all packed and full of algae and I could see little blue mold... I repotted it in a mix of sphagnum, leca balls and perlite to be more airy. I had some accidents and broke few roots but many good roots were remaining. It quickly got dehydrated (floppy leaves) and I could see some tiny blue mold and red mold inside the media (I don't understand, I used hydrogen peroxyde when I repotted). I unpotted it and everything was starting to rot... I cut off almost everything and in a desperate attempt I put it in temporary full water culture after spraying it with hydrogen peroxyde again. Hopefully it will grow new roots and stay bounce back. I really wish it could survive, I had it a year ago and it was super vigorous...
I'm afraid of repotting now, I hope next ones will be better...
It would be nice to see some update videos to show the progress of this plant. I hope we’ll see several.
Today is the day!
No, *today* is the day! @@oca8616
Great case study!
The slow withering of leave seems like a rebalance of resources within the plant ... the plant pulling nutrients back from the leave before detaching
This is happening to my mini phal. I have a basal keiki and the mother is leathery. It happened after I transplanted it. I've tried everything. I guess I need to try and separate them because the baby is getting big and has lots of roots.
I have a complex hybrid that did the same exact thing. She grew 3 keikis which I have just left alone thus far. The mother plant has lost all her leaves. The keikis also continue to get leathery and get those sunken spots on the underside of the leaves. I think it’s a fungal infection. After seeing this video I have decided to treat mine with a fungicide. I’m going to just water it in. I wish you and your little keiki luck! Sadly I suspect your success will be more difficult to obtain with a finicky species Phal.
Hi Danny!
Thanks to you I’ve ordered from repotme! I’ve found a new hobby with orchids. I received gifts from family and friends in various occasions and noticed my orchids dying. I decided to try to keep them alive for sentimental reasons. I found your channel and subscribed. Now I’m hooked! Unfortunately I think my orchids were in too bad of shape and now are in ICU. I wanted to know if you can make a video of phalaenopsis anatomy? Can we cut the stem to save a phal and how far above? I will send you videos of my keikis I was able to get from my sick orchids. Thanks !!! I’m a huge fan!!
Dani, Did you test it for virus? I have found that sometimes an orchid doesn’t show the typical symptoms of virus, but it just languishes, especially if stressed (blooming, repotting). When tested for virus, it is positive.
I bought a Doritaenopsis Purple Martin var. blue a few months ago and it arrived with a damaged crown. It promptly pushed out two basal keikis and after a while started growing a new crown that basically looks like a keiki too, with it's own roots and all. No flowers for me anytime soon. 😂
How are you handling the higher watering demands of organic media vs. LECA? Are you soaking your pots with bark/moss? Are you leaving your masdevallias in a moss/pearlite mix?
Friskar is Finnish from Finland 😊
I have a Phalaenopsis that is going through this same ailment. It takes a long time for the entire leaf to die, but they started browning/yellowing at the tips and it migrates down the entire leaf. The closest thing to it was your videos explaining sunburn on the leaves, but it is different. I have moved them further away from the sun facing window and the problem persists. The (2) newer leaves she sprouted do not show the same symptoms, they appears healthy. But she has sprouted 2 kaikis (one of them all the way on the bottom, among the root system!) Not sure at all how to help her :-/ I don't think the kaikis have their own roots yet. Thanks for the video and let me know if you have any suggestions! =P
Beautiful, thanks!
Dsnny what do you think of having orchids in just water... I think I have not seen you talk about a just water set up so I would like to know your thought on it greetings from Mexico and btw I love your channel!!!
Hi, I talked about it in a very old video, but my opinion has not changed. Not a fan ☺️
My understanding is epiphytic orchids do not drink water - they absorb humidity. That means placing the roots in water will drown the plant.
I suspect what remains of the mother plant will react to being cut by making a second basal keiki :D
I have an orchid with 2 large spikes with numerous keikis. Can I cut them off and plant them? They have a lot of healthy roots.
Hi, if some of the roots are 10 cm or so long, then yes they can be removed and potted up ☺️
@@MissOrchidGirl thank you
hi, I have a phalaenopsis schilleriana but the leaves are green not purple ??
I have a question not related to this video... I am in the process of moving in the middle of this European heat wave. My new house has a glassed-in porch that I thought would be a good spot for my phals, but it gets up to 40C in there. My current apartment is getting up to ~28-30C. Will the jump in temperature be too much of a shock and I should find a spot in the house for them for now?
oh, most of them have flower spikes, several with buds (five out of seven plants. The two that don't have flower spikes are pretty sick - I'm guessing orchid fleck virus - but they have been hanging in there and slowly making new roots for over a year, so I'm letting them keep going)
Hello Miss O girl! 😃 I heard you can water orchids with kamomile tea as it is antibacterial or something. What do you think?
PS, love your videos you've realy taught me allot
Hi, using camomile in orchid water is just as effective, or disinfecting, as using camomile on toilets 😉
@@MissOrchidGirl OK good to know 😄
I just saw a video using aloe Vera plant and juice for fertilizer and to work as a keiki paste. What are your thoughts?
Hi, not a fan of these types of 'hacks' ☺️
Hi danny? How long it takes for phals keikei to flower?
when I separated mine (it was from a very robust flower shop find and i waited for it to grow 5 leaves) it took 2 years to flower
Fiskars is finnish company :) All my scissors are from them and my kitchen knifes.
Sometimes orchids are just baffling, aren't they?
