Out of all the videos on your channel covering various atrocities, this is the one that gets censored... Keep putting this work out there, this information is there for everyone to access but in the West we are almost brainwashed into avoiding these uncomfortable truths, almost as if some collective doesn't want us to come to grips with our morbid reality.

The correct pronunciation of Gaulle is closer to “goll” (as in “doll”) than “ghoul.” That said, I suspect the mispronunciation may have been sneakily on purpose because of de Gaulle’s ghoulish nature.
Eventually de Gaulle would become president again and pursue peace talks with the FLN in 1959, which were completed in 1962. The reaction of many military and police officers was one of anger. Several tried to kill de Gaulle, and the Pieds-Noirs, the european upper class living in algeria, created their own groups which began attacks on the FLN, algerian civilians, and even french soldiers, whomst they viewed as traitors for not brutalising the population. The army, which had a vested interest in keeping Algeria a french colony, with CIA support, even attempted a coup against the Gaullist government, which thankfully failed.
The French have a pretty terrible history as colonizers, but we Americans (assuming you are one) shouldn’t throw stones. For instance, the Panama Canal has been in the news recently, and all Americans should do some research on the history of that and how the locals were treated by the American government at and around the time of its construction (maybe Aliurus could do another video about that)
As much as it makes me crack up snickering, France isn't the only country with a bloody history of colonization,Britain,Italy, Germany, Spain and Portugal and so on and on, every European country has a skeleton in their closet, no matter how much they look different (ahem, Belgium and The Netherlands)

Since WWII was only about 80 years ago and because France was our (US) ally who’s military got completely dominated by the Germans (Hitler took Paris and raised the Nazi flag at the Eiffel Tower like 5 days after invading) we’re mostly taught to think that the French were good people who just wanted to stop the spread of Nazism. The truth is pretty much all the way from before WWI to as far back as France was established they’ve committed atrocities against several countries and displayed no humanity when colonizing these countries who were simply outgunned (literally). This is sad but I’m glad there’s at least a little light being brought to the ugly history France really has.

I heard about the story back during the Olympics because Algerian athletes were honoring those who died in Paris and they threw flowers in the river seine during the opening ceremony. (I’m American by the way.)
I didn't learn about it in school ( Ireland) but I studied film and broadcasting in college ( early 90s) so that is where I came across it, Battle of Algiers film (1966). Amazing film, shot using local people, documentary form, was banned in France when it was released.
I’m Algerian and I would say it is only forgotten in the English speaking world, I am friends with lots of people from France and quebec and all of them know about the conflict between north Africa and France. But English people and the west don’t know because it’s not part of their history

France went from being able to wage war against all major powers during the napoleonic wars and last almost 20 years under those circumstances, to being steamrolled by the Germans TWICE, one in 1870 and another in 1940, and it would have also happened in 1914 but they had the Russians and British to fight the war for them. France was drunk on their ww1 victory that they didn’t even think that ww2 was going to be different. They thought that Germany wasn’t going to learn its lessons and apply them in the future.
@gloverfox9135 I agree with all of that, the fact remains that the US was very ambiguous in its position towards germany until the last minute in WWII They ended up landing huge contracts to finance farm machinery and it changed the french world whose population went from mostly farm hands to town rats so to speak. Crop lands became uniform to optimize efficiency, old trees cut down and shi... sad stuff.. I was born and lived there for three years, I have family there (we are migrants from neighbouring countries) its culture it very heterogeneous
There were no good guys in this particular war… both sides had some pretty understandable and valid reasons for hating each other, and both also committed war crimes and atrocities
I am sorry. But any atrocities committed by the natives are more justified than those committed by their oppressors. France invaded their territory and destroyed their way of life. Anything that happens as a consequence of this is on France. Those atrocities, from both sides, are ultimately France's fault
