Go for it I'm getting back on alto myself I never played sax before I took lesson from a guy name Randy Hunter he's on UA-cam his teaching is awesome I can't wait to get back playing on my alto
Checking all my liked videos as an adult music teacher... thankful I got to hear this as a High School student. Really inspired me to do music as a profession.
It's a bebop line based on the dorian mode. Check out the Jamey Aebersold 2-5-1 book, it has tons of lines like that, and is a good way to learn them. Thanks!
The dropbox link seems to be dead now, but the chords sequence is Im7-IV7, in this case Cm7-F7, repeated over and over. It's amazing how he can keep going over the same and not get repetitive. A talented soloist - bravo!
Wow! I remember seeing this video a long time ago, when it only had a couple thousand views! Now you've gotten so far.. great too see! First time I saw this, I thought it was great. Opinion hasn't changed :)
Honestly mad respect to you dude, I don't have a clue who the fuck disliked this but honest to god in my personal opinion it's better than a lot of great sax players out there, I come too this over Brubeck, Coltrane, seat belts, Wilmer etc I can tell you just love music, I've been watching this video for months now but just thought I'd drop a comment on and say keep it up I hope your still at it. I'm a musician from the uk I play acoustic guitar and sing and bought my very own alto sax 4 months back and am having lessons and you are a hue inspiration to me. Take that in high strides and keep up the good work my friend. 10/10
I only see a lot of people talking about David's solo, that was so, it's very easy, because do as he did for me to see and learn more, because what he did was very beautiful and perfect, his phrases he used never saw any saxophonist do, all perfect, congratulations David, keep doing more. grade 10.
Just came from a big band jazz performance with some of the best on the East Coast. This blows away the lead alto there. Simply AMAZING NEVER STOP PLAYING!!!
I was at an honor band camp a couple weeks ago and met David there. He let me play a Selmer Reference 54 Alto and I fell in love with it, but unfortunately, I wasn't able to purchase it. I was playing the Alto with a Phill-Tone Solstice mouthpiece, and I highly reccomend them! They are hand made buy a guy and they are pretty rare to find in your local music store. David is not only an amazing saxophone player, but he is a very nice gentleman. I want to be as good as him when I grow up!
Dude go on America's got talent, I'm not kidding! I think you could do well there (I'm not just saying that) I really mean it not just saying it to be kind or some shit.
David, an absoulutely SMOKIN ASS solo. I see you are closing in on a million views, I may have contributed at lease a hundred or so. Ive been playing sax for some time and I only dream of slicing off a sweet run like that. Nice job.
duuuuude.........wow...this is truly outstanding! I, like some others here, can't get enough. Over and over and over again with no regret.....louder and over again.....The glare of tastlessness is drowned by your pure poetry....I'll be looking for you.
David Strong oh ok, phew, almost lost sleep on that one!.. with 10 years I guess it's well enough stood the test of time though. anyways great playing, yadda yadda :P
For sure. If you want to learn funk, start with jazz. I love funk, but I studied jazz as much as I could, and SO much of the vocabulary translated to funk. The think about funk is you then have to play the jazz lines with a little more aggressiveness. That, combined with the groove is what I think makes good funk music. I'm still practicing every day to try to get there too! good luck!!!
You have amazing talent that can't be taught. I played alto in school, first chair in orchestra and band; our orchestra won first place in the grammar school category in a national competition, so I know what it takes and can appreciate your skill. Just my opinion, but you are the best I've heard in a long time. Keep on singin' thru that alto! PS: Your rendition of Ressuscita me(Caio Mesquita sax) is a favorite of mine.
This is absolutely incredible! I play alto sax myself and have been for a few years but videos like this always inspire me to play more and help me to see just how vast jazz is. You've done an awesome job and I hope to use some of your improvisation tricks as inspiration for my upcoming HSC- thanks!
Also, do you recommend any solo pieces or ensemble pieces that would be good for my year 12 HSC? I am around grade 5 or 6 music, but any suggestions are great. :)
jesus, this is so amazing... i just started to play saxophone recently, still sound like a crying duck. you are the best . this video is my inspiration.
Wow!! I used to play when I was a kid, for circumstances that werent in my hands I had to stop playing, but you just inspired me to get a sax again and start over again! You are amazing!!

This is nice. I just started playing the Alto Sax and look forward to sounding this smooth on the Alto. If I had the power to extent that track to 15 to 20 minutes and kick back and chill. Thanks for sharing.
Hello David, Luv it, Luv it, Luv it. This solo is very inspiring. I first heard you playing this solo a few years ago, and I am still impressed and inspired again and again. Congratulations on 1,337,196 UA-cam view..." You the man!!!, gk
YEAH MAN!!!!! You rise way above the somewhat cheesy backing there by totally bringin' it. Great sound, ideas, execution...you played your tail off in that clip. Great playing, Dave!
ugh I remember being in 7th grade and begging my band teacher to switch me from flute to sax because of this video 😭 she finally gave and I played right up until I graduated high school. Haven’t played for almost 4 years and I miss it like crazy.
Wow, this is really awesome. I play the saxophone myself but this is a whole different kind of music. So fast and faultless. I really would love to say there is one thing that I'm thinking that could be done better, but it is so awesome, I don't dare :)

Yea, it's a fairly easy one to learn and is super fun to play.
guys. it depends on the level you're playing it on. playing the notes isn't hard, thats true. but to get the right tune...

How does one make playing sax over a backing track in a hotel room sound like it was recorded in a top notch studio with engineers to match ?
+Daniel Kelly - exactly.... lol... but to someone not paying attention... its just magic. I am impressed by his soloing... nice to say the least.
