Ive just had ago at your 3oclock / closed flut to start and then open up to 2oclock WOW total change and I’ve reground my roughing gouge to continental grind, every video is a massive move forward and I’ve been a carpenter & joiner for 43 years 😮 your never to old to learn something new, its amazing cheers matey Im buying you beer next time i pass your workshop 😂😊
This is my third video this evening. I have enjoyed them all. I finish my small projects with a mixture of shelac, alchohol and boiled linseed oil in equal proportions. It leaves a flash dry finish that is durable. Sometimes I coat this finish with a mixture of orange oil and bees wax. It works well for me. Thanks for making these videos.
I enjoy watching your hollow form process. So many accomplished turners still rely on a forstner bit for the bulk removal. I am not surprised it takes less time to hollow with good technique with the gouge than the setup time required to attach the jacobs chuck with the bit and work into the endgrain, and then finally unchucking from the tailstock and getting back to turning.
You are right, all that takes time which in production run you don't have often, so stuff like this really helps out a tone... Thank you very much for watching and support what I do 🤗
Tomislav bonjour. Un grand merci pour cette vidéo ,tout est expliqué dans le tournage ,cela aide énormément .Le bois et le résultat sont magnifique ,j'adore.👍
Simple but classic design. As always a great source of techniques to develop confidence in improving my turnings. I had missed it in January, but never too late.
A lovely shape in lovely woods. Not sure if I wouldn't prefer a darker lid, walnut or scuh. I somehow thought it would be more of a suction fit when you started. It'd make an interesting tea caddy if it was. A thin strip of rubber in the lid might do that though. Thanks for another interesting, educational and entertaining video.
This is separate from tea caddies, tea caddies will have I hope one of those fits like you get on phone boxes where it just slowly goes down to close.... But we shall see how it behaves ☺️ Thank you Joris very much
Very nice work indeed. You blew me away with how quickly you did thr initial shaping. It takes me 3 times longer 😅 Im now wondering how blunt my tools are... 😮
Awesome as usual. Just an idea, could the bottom of the lid also have had a slight taper on the rim to give the lid a little more tilt when pressed to make it easier to remove it from the base? Just a thought for consideration. Man how you are able to hollow end grain and so deep is unreal! I only dream to be half that good!
Hi Scott, I supposed that would be good idea to try out, I might do similar one soon, also thank you very much for kind words, key for hollowing is not to have too much tool in contact with wood and to have it tilt down.
This is a very interesting design and looks great. Learned a lot from this video. I couldn’t tell from the label, what kind of oil is it that you used? Linseed, or something else?
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Thanks. I was actually able to pause the video to see the can last night and saw that it's Steinert Drechsleröl, which seems to be linseed oil with a few additives. A bit of web searching gave me this: Contents Linseed oil, linseed oil-stand oil-natural resin ester, linseed oil-wood oil-stand oil, highly transparent iron oxide, titanium dioxide, natural resin glycerol ester, linseed oil-stand oil, orange oil, isoaliphates, silicic acid, micronized wax, pine oil, rosemary oil, dehydrated amino sugar and drying agents free of lead, cadmium, cobalt, manganese and zirconium.
I’m wondering why that scraper is narrowed up on the right side? I’ve seen a number of box scrapers that are just the opposite which I thought would work better. Just wondering because I want to make one. Is 6mm thick enough? I liked that lid opening idea. I’ll have to try it. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much for watching, not sure why is it on other side, me personal like this way and works great, 6mm should be ok for up to 3inch or so depth, anything deeper I would reccomend 8 or 10mm thick
This is such an interesting design; both box and lid. The curve that runs the length of the box is subtle but effective.

Thank you Jim, really appriciate that ☺️
nice looking simple project, and also instructing in how to use the different tools.

Hello Tomislav,
wonderful idea. I'm going to try that soon, but not with mahogany. 😉
Greetings Andreas
Thank you Andreas ☺️

Lovely design, having made many boxes with conventional lids it’s nice to see a new idea. Thanks
Thank you 😀
What ?? You are supposed to use a colorful sock for the wax… like Richard!!
I missed the making of the jam chuck … another video??
Quite nice 👍 👍
Thanks Alan, I usually have single color socks😅 I'll do a video on Jam chucks as well, should be fun one
Very nice work indeed. You blew me away with how quickly you did thr initial shaping. It takes me 3 times longer 😅
Im now wondering how blunt my tools are... 😮
Thank you, that is the reason Why I'll offer sharpening of my tools before shipping,so everyone that orders will try and feel what sharp is.
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning any tips for us mere mortals?

Thanks Tomislav.
Looks great
Great box tommi.
Really interesting approach for lid.
i really like that design ! well done Sir!
Beautiful box Tomislav. I love the simplicity of the design.
Beautiful grain on that well done!

I like your work and the design. Well done.
Muy linda esa cajita
Gracias😀
Nice looking container
Very nice work. Thank you for sharing
Love the design and lid operation!
Nice design. Got to try that. Thanks for the inspiration. Again!
Beautiful and elegant minimalist design. I have made a few handles from Sapele...had difficulty avoiding fine tear out but got it smooth eventually.
Agreed. Quite elegant.
Thank you ☺️
Thanks 😉
Nice videos and box!
Simple but elegant.
This is a very interesting design and looks great. Learned a lot from this video. I couldn’t tell from the label, what kind of oil is it that you used? Linseed, or something else?
Yes, I either use linseed or tung oil

Great projet
That is a stunning looking box.
I am always fascinated by your finesse of work and at the same time a natural fluidity!!! Where do you buy this sapele?
Thank you very much, local hardwood/lumber yard 🤗
Great tips again
Love it. Simple and elegant.
vary nice !
Muy linda y simple caja
Really nice demo/explanation of what you were doing & why. I’m not crazy about the color of the lid. A dark wood might look better. Nice tool work.
Thank you sir 🤗
Nice top, must try it, cheers!!!
Another fun watch! Magic tool work. How long do you think it takes for the wax/oil finish to cure for full use?
I would let it sit for as long as oil need to dry by manufacturer, unusually 2 weeks and after that ready for full use
Brilliant!!!
6:39 Using this tool are you only going in about two inches?
Nope, I hollow up to the handle if there is need. It has longer handle to make this easier
4:07 i tried that method, but i had nasty catch and everything tried to explode. I’m with 40 deg spindle gouge. Is my angle the problem?
Its one of the hardest techniques in turning, sounds weird but you have to have bevel contact otherwise it will catch , try more towards 45-50 degrees

Have you ever tried Pentacryl green wood stabilizer before turning greenwood ?
I have not, why would you use something like that on green wood?
It looks good, keep going bro ☺☺
Thanks buddy
Что за древесина..как пластилин..Ты бы так шустро бук ободрать попробовал..или акацию..
Its sapele mahagony, but other timbers work the same....
