- Barenboim conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in a stellar performance of Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony in F minor for the opening concert of Carnegie Hall's 1997 season. Yes, that is the legendary Bud Herseth marshalling the CSO's incredible brass.
Bud Herseth in all his glory - loud, bright, brilliant, long, passionate, ferocious, and 76 years old. Unbelievable.
I wholeheartedly agree with that except the long part. The style was huge front to the note and natural taper with a ringing and singing sound. The hall became so dry after the remodel they did adapt and play with fatter front ends. Always so musical!
As great to watch as to listen to. Barenboim is the best, he really gets into the music completely.
Tempestuous,troubled,exuberant,sorrowful,resplendent...Magnificent.
Barenboim and Chicago Symphony at their absolute interpretive best!
The CSO with Barenboim I think have produced some of the greatest sounds and recordings there are!
This is my favorite piece of music of all time.
If anyone's ever read The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis, whenever I think about the world of Charn, I always hear this music playing in my head. Tchaikovsky is amazing.
BEST trumpet player ever....!!!!!
Barenboim is the MASTER of phrasing!
Thanks for posting! I love every minute of this❤
This may not be considered a masterpiece, but it's dessert for the ears. The best brass section in the world showing the world what they do - led by a man in his mid-70's who is completely in charge and knocking down the back wall. The sound is overwhelming. The whole work is among my favorites - just a fantastic showpiece for a top orchestra to display their best work and bring the audience to their feet shouting.
This is still in my top 10 pieces ever written. Yes, I’m a horn player, but I’m also a composer and arranger, so I seek out the very best music, and this is one of them.
Tchaikovsky 4 is undoubtedly a masterpiece.
Herseth, Farkas, Bell. Holy *spit*.
Herseth, Farkas, Pokorny, et al - amazing.
I think this first movement is by far the most complicated music Tchaikovsky ever composed.
Chromaticism + 9/8 time signature + Tchaikovsky
...it doesn't get much better than that.
This was the first Tchaikovsky symphony that I fell in love with -- it's the pathological melancholy of that waltz that transforms into the glorious fanfare of trombones and the soaring horns at 8:29. Transcendent! Barenboim and the CSO own this performance.
Ah, 240p. We meet again.
This is a fantastic symphony and one of Tchaikovsky's greatest works. It's so vivid and powerful, and the part at 3:42 gives me goosebumps every time.
Bud is so cool! He is my hero! Giving me my career today!
I looked this up because it's in a book I'm listening to. I've never heard it, but much of it sounds familiar from movies. I love it!
Bud gave an incredible interview as he was retiring. I was fortunate to have seen many of his performances. A pillar of the CSO.
This symphony begins in tragedy...and ends in revolution. This reminds me of everything that happened since 5th century AD to Now.
all i can say is.....FANTASTIC PERFORMANCE!!!! best performance of this piece on the whole site!! Thank you tchaikovsky for your wonderful music and Barenboim is just awsome! This song will Always be in my Heart!:D
A stellar performance, indeed. Bravo!
GREAT!!!! this is my favorite orchestra and brass section!!!! God bless them!! They Play SOOOOO good!!!
RIP Bud Herseth. Now God gets to have you in His orchestra.
Goddamn, that brass section. Unparalleled.
Fantastic. Favourited and liked.
It looks like he give CSO life it's amazing... Wonderful upload thanks!
magnificent! a very intense, committed and virtuosic performance
And yet the CSO remains of the the top five orchestras in the world.
Listen to how herseth’s trumpet rings at 0:45 it’s unbelievable to imagine how loud he is playing. It’s beautiful.
it always inspire me 💖💖
loveeee thisss!!
I get to see this this afternoon!
The world's greatest music ever.
Majestic!!
Fabulous!
I just saw this yesterday. Fantastic piece.
Listened this for the first time and the blare from the trumpets in the beginning scared the crap outta me. :-0
It's a great depiction of life.
Truly one of the greatest of symphonies. Believe it or not, I know people who don't like this!
I can't fathom not loving this tbh...
The beginning of this is such a horngasm.
incredible, amazing!!
This Symphony is really powerful! My God!
amazing!!!!
I LOVE THIS SYMPHONY. Words cannot describe. Phew!
just one word.... amazing
I wish I could have seen it... I love this movement.
Herseth!!!! A New England Conservatory Grad. Half way through his 1st season, the principal trumpet took ill. Bud was moved up from 3rd. Reiner was the conductor then. He was known to try to break people. The famous 1st trumpet c to high cl ick from Strauss was played by Bud and Reiner tried to break Bud by going back over it a couple of times. He nailed it every time. After that,Reiner gave Bud final say who got in the brass section. That's why they sound the way they do.
Bud was never the third trumpet. Rodzinski hired him as first. Bud said he never played under Rodzinski in a concert.
Reiner was named principal conductor in 1953.
Bud Herseth is still principal trumpet in this recording -- 49 years after he started with the CSO in 1948!
Wow chills mid way through it really hit me.
He was not playing Brandenburg 2 when that happened. He was playing the C to high C call in Also Sprach Zarathustra. Fritz Reiner kept going over the passage repeatedly, for no apparent reason. When a violinist asked him why, Reiner said he was waiting for the trumpet player to miss, at which point Mr. Herseth said, "Maestro, I'm prepared to do this all afternoon." That was that.
Damn
The clarinet player's expression at 5:41 is just as surprised, curious, and derpy as the music there is. I love it :D Awesome solo.
Stunning Orchestra
tchaikowsky is my favorite composer!
my oh my, barenboim is a dramatic conductor, i must say

🎧
Daniel Barenboim (Buenos Aires, 15 de novembro de 1942) é um pianista e maestro argentino. Daniel Barenboim mora em Berlim.
best orchestra brass ever heard
If my county orcestra does it half as good as this I will be thrilled.
The Clairinetist and Bassonist and Oboeist are amazing!
I really love the Andante sostenuto Introduction with a brass "ta-tatatatatata-"
That´s true! I simply love his music.
Great symphony, it shadows his greatest, No. 6, which he wrote as an elegy to his life and soon to be death.
fantastico...
I don't know that I would compare other symphonies as cardboard boxes, but the 4th is my favorite, but Tchaikovsky is also my favorite composer as well.
My marching band is doing a version of this for our show next year.
Benissimo maestro e caro amico
Fritz Reiner--yes! His morbid account of the Pathetique symphony is still in a class by itself. I simply can't believe his RCA recording of the Nutcracker Suite which features the fastest March and Trepak that I have ever heard anywhere, and the Waltz of the Flowers with that colossal Chicago sound.
TRUE!! Gotta love CSO's brass!!
The Chicago brass are the best in the world...period!
SO...MANY...LEGENDS!!!
dang just look at helseth on trumpet.... jeeze what a pair of chops
Adolph Herseth was my dad's trumpet teacher.
A very powerful performance. It's a wonderful interpretation.
During the fourth minute though it looks like the video's in fast-forward or something XD
yes sir. he is sitting right next to Bud. i'm still nervous playing in front of him, and its been about 3 years that i have been taking lessons with him.
phenomenal. I aspire to play like david mcgill.
some ppl say that trying to play like a professional usually is not practical. But i think it's a great way to discover more about your own sound and style. i also think it's great motivation.
¡SIMPLEMENTE GENIAL!
this song is just amazing.... at 6:06 when the cellos take the melody... like a magestic wave of sound flowing through the air. It gives me chills!
Song -_-
this is en stays just soo fukking awesome!!..
THANKS FOR VIDEO...!!!! TCHAIKOVSKY THE GREAT COMPOSER !!!!! JITEN PATEL INDIA....jzpatelut..
That's true. I saw it. Amazingness.
a work from Tchaikovsky is more than millions work than actual artists
SUPERB!!!!
No, 76. Born 1921, performance was 1997. 76. I'll say it again. 76. What a gift.
6:05 to 6:25, the interaction between the flutes and low strings is breathtaking
seeing the New york youth symphony perform this tomorrow at carnegie tomorrow :D
