Glorious sound from this very fine orchestra and wonderful conductor: lush strings, resonant and heroic brass, and beautiful, elegant woodwind, doing some lovely 'conversational' ensemble playing. Thank you for lifting our spirits in these gloomy times. Bravissimi!

Why do people never comment on the 3rd movement of this symphony it's absolutely fantastic and very difficult to play , this symphony by Tchaikovsky is the best in all classical music.

I heard the Oslo Philharmonic with Petrenko interpreting Tchaikosky's 5th and thought it was exceptional... It turns out this was their norm!! My jaw is on the floor right now. I heard this music in a Jan Svankmajer film called Conspirators of Pleasure and had no idea it was Tchaikovsky until just now.
Another great performance of Tchaikovsky by Petrenko and Oslo Philharmonic! Tchaikovsky's 4th, 5th and 6th have charted the greatest symphonic territory known to mankind. The players are exhilarated playing Tchaikovsky symphonies and the expression on the performer's face at 8:57 is a testimony to that. The nirvana moments from 7:45 to 10:45 are out of this world; particularly from 9:40 to 10:40 when every section of orchestra play a different phrase magically blended into what is a "Tchaikovsky miracle". You would see similar passages in most Tchaikovsky works and again here between 22:40 and 24:30. Have heard for thousands of times but always sound fresh.
Amazing rendition. Neearly flawless finish; it's just not the same without the ruckus applause to close out a Tchaikovsky symphony. In all seriousness, these performances were a godsend during lockdowns. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I didn't know what it was so went to the local music shop and described it. he man in the shop thought it might be Tchaikovsky so I started with 6. No. Then 5. No. Finally 4. That was it. Loved it ever since.
Fantastic performance. This symphony is not easy. It is filled with symbolic music material that has to be regarded in the interpretation. From the ide fixe of a polonaise (dance macabre) of destiny the music turns into a melancoly waltz (in 9/8) but with a remarkable drive. 2nd movement is the only movement in the music history that describes boredom without getting boring. 3rd movement is amazing the 3 levels of a balalaika orchestra,a drunk person in the street and a military orchestra is far a head of the time as an image. And the 4th movement is just great with the russian folk song that is happy and sad at the same time. Just a supirior piece of art is this symphony. It is so well performed in this video. If I was told I could only listen to two classical pieces the rest of my life, the list would include the 2nd movement of Beethoven's 7th Symphony and the 2nd movement here. Thank you. Must admit I would be hard pressed to give up my opera though, like Pavarotti's "Nessum Dorma", Damrau's "Queen of the Night", and all the Wagner operas.
Strange how you remember snippets of music from decades ago. The opening 30 seconds was the BBC Ivanhoe from 1970. Guess that is the power of (great) music. Russian music seemed popular especially on Children's programmes back then. Prokofiev was used on the Flaxton Boys and on Huntingtowr. I'm still trying to trace after years a piece of I think Russian music used on a Panorama Special in the 1970's about the rise of the Red Fleet. Oh well such is life!. .The finale rivals the William Tell overture for drama. Thanks for sharing this anyway great stuff!
One thing I find outstanding about this performance and recording is the (soft/loud) dynamics that are not always distinguishable on UA-cam videos of symphony recordings. Sound engineers did a great job here. And I also love the quick transition from the third to the fourth movement, it really accentuates the emotion of that section.

So fantastic and poignant a performance, with the orchestra socially distanced and no audience! What a terrible time it was, not knowing if there would ever be audiences and public performances again, but musicians play on regardless, always, ALWAYS giving our best. Bravissimo!!

3rd movement is one of my least favorite movements of any symphony. Truthfully though you have to hear it live. Recordings never do it justice.
