As a trumpet player, hearing music like this is really inspiring. I’m only in highschool band right now, but oh my god I just love the thought of being able to play this well one day, if I put in enough practice.

Ms. Balsom is awesome... in the true meaning of the word. I am about to play this concerto in a couple of hours before a huge crowd and watching her, her inspiration, settles my stomach.... I am channeling you, Alison. Elliott Oppenheim, Trilllium Brass
One thing I've noticed from other trumpet soloist who play this piece is that they play the whole song the same dynamic. Her adding the dynamic changes is amazing! Her pianissimos blend perfectly in with the orchestra while her fortes or fortissimos still stand out as being loud and proud as a trumpet fanfare! Well done, amazing job!
Such a beautiful and talented woman. It's all the people here, including the audience that gives me hope that life is worthwhile after all. Some humans still strive and love things of beauty and making this world a better place. At times it seems things are so on the verge of collapse, there isn't much hope left. thanks.
Played this at State competition as a high school senior (40 years ago now). Man, it was tough! Started whistling along. She played it beautifully, and so cleanly. Bravo 👏
At first I didn't know if I was going to like her articulation, but it didn't take a minute or two and I was hooked. The cadenza was outstanding, virtuosic but so tasteful. Decrescendos in places where it's hard to get softer on the trumpet. Total artistry. Alison would have made Haydn proud.
I love her interpretations of the classics. There are so many subtle nuances in her playing that keep these dinosaurs fresh and exciting! Not to mention how well she captures all of the playful phrases with absolute ease and control. She is a master!
I know she looks young, but she's actually over forty. She certainly achieved a great standard when she was younger, but she wasn't notably precocious compared to say Wynton.
Quite simply, this lady is without any serious competition. Her elegance, dedication and sheer love for the trumpet shines through in abundance and then some. May Ms Balsom grace us for a long time to come.
I heard her playing a different song on the radio and it stopped me in my tracks. I had never heard a trumpet played with such effortless joy. So glad I found this performance!
Bravo, bravissimo! Feiner Ton!
.... her phrasing....magnificent.... she is one of the all time best in my book.... do you know the level of difficulty she overcomes to produce tone like this..... so beautiful and expressive....an inspiration..... thank you Alison...
In an interview, Alison explains how she practices every day in an old abandoned wooden church near her home.; the longest she's ever gone without practicing is two weeks, once, several years ago; and that the nature of being a soloist is the constant travel alone and the inability to sustain a relationship (although she has "best friends all over the world"). She loves Haydn, and explains how Haydn wrote this piece to show off the versatility of a then-new musical instrument, one with valves!
I read somewhere that the first performance was a disaster as the newly invented valved trumpet went wrong! Problem was hopefully fixed for subsequent performances.
