Reminder, Mikey grassed on my WYSWIG...guess we'll never find out what happened to his model.
Sounds like an admission of guilt

What does any of this mean
@@tomdenyer3229 SNITCHES GET STITCHES
Well I'm glad that's cleared up.
what GW needs to do is develop edible sprues, so when I'm done with assembling the minis, I can just have a little snack from the leftovers
Hahaha! No that’s some outside the box thinking
The only problem there is edible sprues infers edible miniatures and I can just see the hobby horror stories rolling in about some neckbeard at someone's local store getting salty about losing and eating their army.
@@sonicwingnut They'd be eating the paint too, which is probably bad for health
They ARE edible. Give one a munch

I met Mikey at Sanctuary Games, great chap and always ready for a laugh.
These chats are great to listen to while painting, really chill and loads of fun.
Great chat - some fun stuff there on evolving meta and the like! I am always intrigued by people trying to get terrain rules right, especially for a game like 40K which has so much futuristic tech.
I'm with Peachy on rules. I can play a perfectly good game using the rulebook I already have. No need for a new one, unless I just really hate something in the current book. Wishing everyone well!
Kill Team has done an excellent job with terrain rules. An enemy can sometimes be seen, but not shot at due to intervening terrain. Its a great representation of being able to see/know an enemy is there, but being unable to bring effective fire onto them. (very realistic)
Quite interesting about the clickbait thumbnails. I might have to tweak mine as my views are awful 😂😂😂
wow - 2 hours! thanks for kicking off Monday with style!
It's a long one! Hope you can make it through
@@thepaintingphase half way there - lol
You had me at "decipher star wars card game" :-)
Hahaha! Hook, line and sinker 😍
Love ya Brett
Just finished this, I adore this podcast and great to have Mikey on! Love all the work you guys all do, keep it up and can’t wait for the next one!
Would love to see mikey’s chess clock enemy (Arbitorian) on a future episode as you guys just nostalgia gush about classic warhammer
Another great show gents. Keep them coming.
The collab everyone needed 😊
Another banger of a guest!
I love how much you’re doing interviews! :D I know I’m fairly far down the list, but I can’t wait for my invite! 💪😂
On the topic of FAQ/Updates/Ringbinders. One thing I haven't really seen from any/many companies is the model Kingdom Death went with. They released an upgrade card pack, first to previous backers for $5 + shipping, which included all upgrade cards from the 1.5 -> 1.6 edition. *AND* They included stickers to go over sections in the rulebook to replace it with the new balance rules.
I'd MUCH prefer this for LOTR/40K as I could have a "final" version of the rulebook at the end of an edition which as said here, is the 'most balanced' time for the Edition.
And lets be real, they should really update the Digital Versions to have the amended rules, you shouldn't need a digital copy, *AND* a balance dataslate.
IMO Non Wisywig is fine as long as it's consistent e.g. "all my grenade launchers are meltas" is fine. But "half are flamers and Half are meltas" is not.
These talks are always, always highly entertaining and I can't wait for the next one.
another great guest. but felt weird that there seemed less tangets than normal. but epic trigger moments. :)
Good show. Interesting to see terrain rules described as bandaid for the models - when I see the terrain rules and need of blocking line of sight so much are a band aid for the trhreat ranges, i go you go etc. that are the core mechanics of the game
Great video. Loved it. Love Mikey from Wargaming. But my only take away from this video was that y’all had painted Andor and I missed it. Got it queued up for right after this one.
New game. Take a drink whenever Jeff says "When I was in the military"
Great show guys👍
Great chat, kept me going while painting an Ultramarine...
Paint on brother, paint on.
The highlight of my Mondays!
loved the discussion about Terrain, some really good points made :)
I think Jeff needs to have a crack of Team Yankee/Flames of War. The artillery spotting has a modifier for if there is terrain near the target, as it makes it harder for the observer to range the guns in...
Good episode, a lot of fun!
Another great little chat video.
Totally agree with the "got the book, play them rules". As I tend to play with drinks and snacks my gaming style has moved from rules heavy gaming to loose and and easy gaming,
Quality biscuit cam this week 👌
Also re sprues - Anvil Industry still lead the way by making their sprues double as basing accessories! Genius!
Great video as usual guys!
I love watching your videos. You're all just so funny and charming, and good-natured. Truly, some of the best hobby videos on the Internet.
P.S. 5th Edition Fantasy Battle is my favorite edition, too.
This feels like when your at school and you see a teacher at Asda. The streams have crossed 😂
😅 Excuse me Egon ! I thought crossing the streams was bad?
Hope you've done your homework
Its interesting to hear Geoff talk about his experience in the armed forces and how that translates to his understanding of games. I work in video games and its something that is constantly being weighed up, how can we make the experience feel intuitive with what most people know but also make it fair across the board. Every aspect of the real world can be simulated with enough time but that isn't the aim, our job is to make it feel 'kinda right' while also being fun and understandable. Saying all this, 40k is a bit of a mess when it comes to a lot of this stuff so I can see it being a bit frustrating 😆
Honestly, I'm only here to hear "I'm Geoff" spoken in that sultry voice. But the rest of the video and Mikey is surely great, as always!
I remember my time at Meadowhall in the late 90’s. Dave Brighton is a super awesome chap 😊
The long discussion about line of sight, indirect fire, and so forth has highlighted for me another thing I like about Stargrunt: the units *do* talk to each other and there are clear rules for how they share information. Especially for something like mortars or off-board artillery, where a specific unit has spent their action to call for indirect fire and the line-of-sight penalties are calculated from the unit calling in the strike, not the unit firing it. (This setup also allows for things like FOOs to work very well.)
Excellent one lads!
The main “issue” I have with hearing too much negativity is that it is kind of taxing. Not that criticism is a bad thing, but I do want some laughs and stories when I sit down to paint and watch, not just negativity and some channels really lean into that.
Also I do wish that some other game would come in and be the best selling miniatures game for a bit like X-Wing once was, not only because then maybe not everyone had to do 40k videos to make a living, but maybe some competition would lead to better products all around. A bit like WotC and D&D, they have 80% of the market and not even their latest blunder seemed to change that, and you can see on some of their products that they’re not even trying.
Oh, and thanks for a great episode as always, I’d pay good money to see you guys take your Cursed City models through Rangers of Shadow Deep but in the current economy my “good” money won’t even get you a fistful of eggs. Looking forward to Necromunda.
Thanks TerrierHalo for the comments, much appreciated 😍👍
Then don't watch hellstorm gaming. He's all about click bait and drama
As a northerner now living in Bristol on my way home to Teesside one Xmas. I decided to run an experiment to see where the north starts, according to motorway signs. I can confirm the point at which the motorway stops saying ‘the north’ is Scotch Corner. So logically everything below that has to be the midlands
Love scotch corner, it means I'm an hour away from Cumbria. My spiritual home.
I'd say scotch corner is the lowest part of the north like good spot
@@laam999 everything below is basically the midlands
Great Vid, Mikey great, looking forward to the pete the wargamer episode, Baldermort and auspex next? or would that be audio only :p
I think the Invictor Warsuit proxy should be given its own tactical name - The Hellstorm in a Teacup!
I fully understand what Geoff (Jeff?) is saying. I'd love to have an army of renown that is Alpha Legion and their convert guard/cultist operatives. But it'll never happen cause it's too hard to pull of in game
Great episode
# Justice for Peachy's Warcry Folder! As always great show and thanks for introducing a few of us to Hellstorm. I've not seen his content before but now I can deepdive.
I am building the Desolation squad on the backpack. I saw Tabletop Titans first, have to give credit.
wow that may have been the fastest off topic ever. Good skills
I think you're right!
Star Wars CCG reference. Amazing.
I think Battletech gets the level of complexity right when it comes to recon and information sharing, so there's enough to make it seem like your units are actually working and can communicate, but it doesn't get too bogged down in it
Is there a chance we go to D12 or even D20, to allow for more power variation? Is it a good idea?
I’ve heard this suggested a ton of times, and though I’ve never considered it myself, it does seem to be a solution in a lot of folks minds, so I guess you never know.
Re the hole in the Dorn tank- I've seen some intuitive modelling done with it. People putting magnets inside to stow the various weapons options.
i'm a new listener and I'm currently catching up on episodes so i don't know if this has been asked yet. Are you boys going to have a franchise of Hive Guys: "Grox" burger and fries in your necromunda games?
Can someone please remind me. Of the two GW black contrast paints, which did Peachy say was best in a recent podcast? Templar or Legion?
Black Legion is the best! Templar is okay.
And this podcast gets even longer!!
Compliment or complaint?
@@thepaintingphase Definitely a compliment. You need the longer podcasts to get through all the rabbit holes.
I think our personal best is about 2 and a quarter hours now.
Great video lads 👏
Thank you Alex 😍😍😍
The terrain fixes to stop an army getting destroyed first turn could be fixed with a better rule set. If you had unit by unit activation (Like Star Wars Legion) rather than one whole army has their turn then you take your turn.
For terrain, I think Legion does it best. 30% of the board space in total coverage and there should be no clear lines of site from one setup zone to the other.
I have t played Legion but that sounds great and fair.
Why would it matter in Legion? Stormtroopers can't even hit anything anyway.
ua-cam.com/video/S-akq7rRnps/v-deo.html "Chuck all your bits in a bucket, throw in some glue, shake it and see what happens"
Are supposed to STOP doing that for kitbashes? No one told me...
No one dare spoil your fun, champ!
Got the same folder .. got all the cards ......
Same feeling
I believe that landspeeder/whirlwind strat was orginally a formation rule from 7th and was made a strat like a lot of formation rules
The less we talk about formation boxset rules, the better... they were so broken - especially the 'Ultimate Storm' rule from the 'Strike Force Ultima' boxset lol
Another great pod cast. With regards to play what you want ; I totally agree, if you’re not playing tournaments, just play from the current rule book as is.
The problem, for me, is that GW appear to focus, far to much, on the competitive side of the game? Which makes casual gamers feel as the need to be playing the current tournament focused version, especially true of new players just getting into the game. This must be putting off a lot of newer players, due to the hard barrier to entry into the rule set?
Here’s hoping 10th fixes this to some extent. 🤞🏻
1:50:40 hmm the discourse on this topic was very interesting 😉
Now I know how powerful Rogal Dorm’s bottom is; thank you for that.
another good episode
Bloody hell Black Reach for 45 quid and he feels old? He's still a youngling, I remember 2nd ed 40k and 4th ed WFB being 39.99 for the box sets and tbf to GW you got about 100 minis as well.
Ace vid with another awesome guest, love it fellas.
PS as a scouser with a massive beard I have to say I feel very seen Geoff (or Jeff, not seen it written down, soz). I just wish I had the luxuriant hair. I take more after Peachy in that department. Wish I could paint like him! Keep smashing out the superb videos guys.
Yep you win on the ‘old’ front lol, but yeah it does show our age somewhat lol - Peachy
WFB was £29.99 and 2nd 40k was £34.99 at launch. Although they were both £40 by 96 - just before 5th ed Fantasy dropped at £50. 40k followed later before 3rd. Quite the jumps percentage wise really in the 90s.
@@olith Was 4th ed 30 quid? the one with Goblins and High Elves? I got it in 92 for 10th Birthday so I was assuming 40 quid as that's what I thought paid for 2nd ed 40k a bit later, but could be wrong - yeah massive jumps. I still have both of mine!
Yeah 4th ed was £39.99, ive still got the sticker on the box from the hobby shop. We bought about 6 of em then swapped the minis around. I had a 3000 point goblin army just from the box sets. Ahhh those were the days. Theres some joker on Ebay trying to sell it for 625 quid atm.
@@leonardodosvinci4130 ha yeah having all your mates into it and swapping minis was cool. Loads of bargaining going on in my teen years over minis! You can pick up old complete starters for less than the new ones if patient. Not as much demand for them as ebay sellers hope for lol
Guys, I'm loving these chats on YT. I'm Spending my late evenings feeding my newborn son, and these videos really keep me going, thank you!
Amazing, I remember blitzing my way through shows in the early hours with my lad, glad we can keep you company 😍👍
@@thepaintingphase Thanks, glad I'm not the only one 😊
I feel like indirect weapons could just be "-1 to hit unless you can draw a line of sight to the target from a unit with the keyword [COMMS]" and then you can set COMMS per army.
Space Marines: every marine. Guard: vehicles and any infantry with a vox. Tyranids: everything so long as a synapse creature is on the board. Orks: Any unit with a Nob or is a Boss (they can shout loud enough).
Then they could tweak how effective each army is at indirect by how much of the army can spot for the indirect weapons.
My biggest 10th Edition dream is we get new Space Marine Scouts. I’m that one guy that actually likes them and the Black Templars update to them got my hopes up.
They’re coming in Kill Team soon
Just what we need, more space marines.
I actually like the Desolation squad. Marines should have ridiculously big, over-the-top guns sometimes!
Interesting discussion on the scenery thing, I wonder if anyone's seen the "rumours" of how 10th is actually changing terrain, I read it on DakkaDakka but it is quite similar to Pats idea, destructible terrain and what not.
You can use 3d printed parts for basing. Therefore tournament legal, even by warhammer world rules.
Until now i had The Last of us on HBO MAX and you on mondays. Well now i have only you to watch on mondays. You keep me happy with your chanel 😄👍
Great show as always!
Just curious - did Patrick grow REALLY tall? Everyone is looking up. :D
I'm still due a growth spurt unfortunately. Essentially the room is tiny and I don't have enough small chairs, I'm stood up most of the time.
@@thepaintingphase Gotcha! Hopefully continued success will allow for a massive studio upgrade. :D
Give my regards to all there.
I put the holsters on my Black Templars. I have units that have shields, guns and melee weapons in their box and their rules. I do my best to be accurate in modeling but they still sell old monopose boxes that have 1/3 of the rules approved gear. GW need to remedy this for the extreme types.
I hope we see an update to the tempest of war cards.
When I was a kid Meadowhall had a Model zone too, it was great.
I think it had a beatties too?
Everyone else hear Jeff heavy breathing towards the end. Noice
I don’t give a damn that the Dorn tank doesn’t have a bottom. I’d rather have all the extra cool stuff. But it does bug me when people try to defend GW’s crazy prices by saying they make the best minis.
Awww man. Does Mikey still live in Sheff?
My mate and I also entered a store painting competition at Uni (Orksmiff represent). We were the only entrants all day :D
He won lol.
Haha! Sweeet 😘👌
1.03hrs in, do you guys still have a landline? :D
I look forward to these videos each week. On the topic of negatively geared channels, I think I also know which one you're referring to, and I've had to erase it from my suggested videos as I really don't care about "how GW is going to start the apocalypse with its next release 😱" It gets repetitive and draining. Whereas channels like the Painting Phase actually make the hobby more inviting and less divisive.
Are we talking about that Irish woman who just screams a lot, then the video ends?
@@leonardodosvinci4130 I’m my case, yes. I stumbled across her videos, some were pretty good but then I think she cottoned onto negativity driving views, and endless negativity drove me away
@@SpectreAtYourFeast Oh yeah, pure hate bait. If you watch it long enough it starts to feel like you're married to her. Im pretty desensitised to it now. Id rather watch a tutorial or hobbyists waffling on.

I hope somebody told Geoff that everything he was talking about with spotters for indirect fire weapons has been in Horus Heresy in both the current and previous editions.
They didn’t but I will holding someone accountable.
First time I watched Mikey on UA-cam he was streaming from a paddling pool in his garden 😂

It's his world, we're just living in it baby

Me and my gaming group love star wars legion, please do some more painting for it if you enjoy it there are so few videos of easy to follow paint guides
I’m a big fan, but at the same time we’ve found it does have quite the negative effect on views……which in itself super bothers me lol.
But if we pitch it right etc then yep I’m all in, I’m super serious about doing the Shatterpoint boxset, which I turn could benefit Legion players
When do we see Byron from Artis Opus as a guest?
Hey any chance your could turn off the discord dings on future stream? its really messing with me cause every time I hear it I check my own discord and no one is messaging me. It's wicked distracting.
Ha! Oops we’re awfully sorry about that, I’ll ensure Pat mutes the discord in future lol 😆👍
@@thepaintingphase all good thanks :)
You mention the "white plastic". I own some of the original white plastic Orcs (yes Orcs not Orks). Also Goblins. If I sent one over how about a painting "challenge" for Peachy , given the lack of detail on the model itself :)
I wouldn't mind playing 7th rules again. Heresy 2 is close tho.
Lots of warhammer players came in during the covid influx and don't have older books to pull from tho. But it isn't tough to find them at used book shops for less than lunch money cost.
I agree with you completely peachy, one doesn't have to play the newest edition. I've stopped at 7th and still enjoy the game immensely. Not to mention I can't wrap my head around all this new ideas no blast templates no flamer templates no armor values. Quite frankly it just hurts my brain.
Star Wars legion is very underrated, probably my favorite game at the moment
BTW I really wish GW wasn’t so strict about adding non-GW bits to the models. I sort of think that, like, as long as the model is still clearly a Games Workshop model, it shouldn’t be a big deal if some extra bits have been put on. Like if a guard infantry squad has, say, a couple heads, some backpacks, and a few pouches and canteens from another company attached, but they’re still obviously Citadel miniatures, that’s still clearly in the spirit of the rule, since you bought the kit for an Astra Militarum infantry squad and are using that kit as an Astra Militarum infantry squad, and it can’t reasonably be interpreted as, like, using a GW event to promote an outside manufacturer’s product.
How is it any different from using non-citadel paints, or non-citadel basing materials?
Like I don’t wanna have to buy five or six boxes of Jakhals just to make sure all the chem-tanks my Savlars wear on their backs come from Citadel products and the army is therefore useable in store, you know? It just feels mean-spirited and stifling at that point.
IT is for pratical reasons it is a zero policy at GW events. First trying to police what you call aceptable or not is very difficult. You will get people complaining some parts are allowed but not others. How would you also enforce that ? What people turn up on the day and risk the army not being allowed. It is next to impossible to define or create rules around this it would either be 3rd party bits are allowed a blanket zero policy of none. Other reasons wouldbe the 3rd party bits could open the models up to abuse to gain advantage. Also from a marketing aspect it does not look when you show photo's of an event and the models are covered in 3rd bits. Mantic or Warlord games would not allow it no company wants create adverts for items it does not sell. This rule only affects a small % of people who enter offical events from GW.
@@redscope897 I*Tons* of issues involved in GW in-store gaming and GW tournaments are already at the discretion of of organizers and store managers, and have to be. For instance, the discussion in this ep of whether or not a holster can count as having a plasma pistol, or if the plasma pistol needs to visually clear.
I don't think it would be too big a change of how things are done to simply have the rule be that as long as it's a Citadel miniature, some third party bits are permissible. Just have it at the discretion of store managers and/or tournament organizers as to where the line has been crossed into it no longer being a Citadel miniature.
Do it anyway. If they're modeled well, you're good to go
The phone ring around the 1 hour mark made me shit myself
Someone was at the door 🚪
Unpopular opinion: I think the solution of 'play what you want' isn't so much a cop-out but an on-paper solution to an actual problem called playing narrative campaigns in stores is rolling rocks up hill. At least in my area, the comp crowd is so dominant, you aren't going to get a game in on the most popular 40k night unless you are coming up with a matched list. The store itself has tried to do narrative/Crusader campaigns and they have either failed outright, or fail soon after launch. Matched play people make the store the most money, and others end up just stopping attending the store for anything else. It's not fun for them, nor can they even find new players to play casually. If they play, they play at home and then no longer need to support the store. It is a problem.
Yes! I haven’t watched this yet, I’m “working” but Mikey’s a solid guest to have on
I am solid. Dead hard

I take offence to the laughing at Orks 😢😢😢😢
26:00 - DAKKA! HERESY!
I believe but don’t fully remember that third edition box it came with a small rulebook. It was also the last addition I know of that came with reference sheets allowed you to quickly look up all your two hits and shooting end of those tables.
