  • Another week, another chat show! This week our thinly veiled topic of discussion is does GW 3D print models? Then we turn onto more pressing matters like getting Darren Latham in as the Prime Minister.

    Really loving these chats. I was almost one of the mould making /3D printing guys for GW, but couldn’t do the shift patterns. Every time I talk about how the process is done it has always attracted hate from people who insist GW don’t dish out resin minis to be painted, etc. The more insight and education that can reach the masses about the miniature industry the better.

    The big issue with the D&D thing wasn't so much fans not being able to monetise content as easily, but more the part that Wizards/Hasbro wanted to force every single person or company publishing content using the existing agreement (which they had promised was irrevocable) to switch to the new one, which would give Wizards of the Coast "nonexclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, sub-licensable, royalty-free license" to take anything published and reuse it without compensation or acknowledgement.

    I believe the original Citadel paints were made for GW by a company called Coat d'Arms. This was when they were in the tall round pots with names like Skull White, Chaos Black, Goblin Green, Bad Moon Yellow etc. After Citadel went with a new manufacturer and changed all the colour names, Coat d'Arms continued making them for their own range and you can still buy them to this day.

    • @MasterShake9000
      @MasterShake9000 Рік тому

      No, the manufacturer is HMG Paints. They supply Coat D’Arms, Privateer Press P3 Paints, and Foundry Paints.
      CDA has the same/similar names as it’s the result of them basically asking HMG to keep making the GW line under a new name when GW switched suppliers.

      Not just you. It seemed to have started when they switched to the SHURE mic. Since then, I could swear all of them (i.e. podcasts) have weird audio distortion, especially so when there are concurrent voice input. For some reason, it's more jarring in this one though. Great conversation guys - really love Geoff's take on how 3D printing could work in a Workshop.
    3D printing is still very much a 'rapid prototyping' system, but won't be long til it moves on to a point where it will be entirely possible to mass produce or print on demand like this. Some boutique third party outlets are already doing this.
    I work in 3D scanning and printing at the moment, and it's got amazing potential in my specialism in museums/archaeology etc, but it's not yet there for hard commercial use.

    Corax white spray is horrendous in Australia, I think it's something to do with the humidity. The off-whites are also bad, I ended up having to put fishing sinkers in all the pots to constantly shake them like spray paints.

    While I think 3D printing is still a long way off from being an everyday thing for most hobbyists, there's still an initial learning curve to overcome but it is becoming just another creative tool rather than the "hobby in it's own right" it was say only 2yrs ago. To the point that I would be very surprised if it wasn't being viewed as an existential threat to GW's current business model. One thing I could potentially see them doing is possibly having ForgeWorld supplementing with or even transition away from cast-resin products to become more of a print-on-demand style service.

I had to repaint the skin on one of my crimson court vampires a completely different skin tone because it was so horrible! I remember doing some kind of tour of Warhammer World (or possibly at a Games Day) as a kid where they explained some of the process for printing the 'red glass' miniature parts to make the molds, way before consumer-grade 3D printing was possible. It was something involving shining lasers through a liquid which caused it to harden at the points where they intersected. Seemed like magic at the time, too. Interesting to hear that the process seems not to have changed much in what must be towards 20 years.

    You've commented in the past about how GW have been numpties for not selling specific shoulder pads but also banning third party sellers. They'd be really smart to sell standard marines (for instance) but you could go in & order Blood Angels shoulder pads & heads to convert the standard into the non standard & the staff member would go "Sure thing, do you want to wait in our coffee shop & I'll get right on that for you?"

    • @redscope897
      @redscope897 Рік тому +4

      The problem is and a lot of people do this is your thinking as a hobbist not as a business. If your GW you have then buy printers for the stores, you have to train people to use them, you have allsorts of heath and saftey issues with staff dealing with chemicals, you have get get wash stations, dispose of the materials. etc etc. If your a small single business those problems might be easy doing that across the globally wide company, working in different countries with different laws and rules is a nightmare.
      I do find it funny because people never think about the business aspect. It is oh I am in the hobby I want this nobody thinks how would you deal with that as a company and just assumes business can thrown money at problems and makes them go away. Maybe one day 3rd Printing will get that point but honestly something like the siocast machines which replicates plastic inject methods without the need for steel moulds is more likely a solution.

    • @rononel8046
      @rononel8046 Рік тому +2

      @@redscope897 that's a lot of assumptions about my thought process there...
      1) you wouldn't necessarily need every store to carry this service
      2) chemical training is pretty simple, they already have to do this for cleaning products (of they're following H&S regulations)
      3) a company as large as Gdub's could procure a fair whack of 3D printers from one of the big companies AND bag a load of training off them if they were savvy enough to partner up with them & let that company say "Official printer for GW accessories"

    • @redscope897
      @redscope897 Рік тому +3

      @@rononel8046 It is a lot of assumptions but it is the same sort of assumptions you made when you called GW numpties for not having a 3rd party printing service in all the stores. Because you dont get the level of complexity involved at all in making that a reality. The first question you have to ask is why would GW bother ? They have a whole factory in fact 2 in the Uk designed to making models. They have a web store service which posts out orders around the world every day. Why would they go down this route of trying to move that into stores ? It makes zero business sense you are just increasing your business costs and adding more complexity to the system.

    • @rononel8046
      @rononel8046 Рік тому +2

      @@redscope897 didn't call them numpties for not having it, but for banning 3rd party products at official events/stores. TBF I'd already considered the notion of using their factory for made to order stuff but that would require them to either a) use one of their pre-existing large scale machines (not practical given the high diversity of product) or b) buy in additional machinery & staff/training.
      But having production capacity spread around they alleviate pressure on central production & also supply a more customer centric service (something Gdub's used to value, probably still do), it's also a pretty decent ISP for them, name another large scale mini manufacturer that does it...

    Peachy I like the jumper ignore the comments glad to see the collar is straight this week. Talking of colours white paint is made of Titanium I stand to be corrected but it is the only way to make white paint. That is the reason that is becomes chalky and splits into lumps in the pot. GW versions seem prone to turning to a cottage cheese or in my recent case just a soild lump at the bottom. Unlike other brands is really does need to be watered down and mixed often. However Corax white does actually cover better than most whites. Often this is a trade off with paint. The best whites tend to be gel based paints.
    The old paints "Choas Black" where made for GW by a 3rd Part now Coats de Arms". I believe it was the same company that used to supply the british army green for painting all the british tanks as well. Of course when GW brought that in house the 3rd party just renamed them and keep selling them. So if you want the original paints google Coat De Arms. There is a video idea for you compare Coat De Arms paints to the current GW ones and prove it peachy is right they have changed. Well I guess we know that is the case of course.

    I built (and still have) the old LR Crusader as a kid and agree with the bolters but it was a real achievement once it was done as a 12 year old. I’ve built a few FW models over the years but the hardest model I came across that taught me pinning etc was the og metal nightbringer

    Listening to you talking about the sprues and tooling design and I totally agree. People often say things like "Games Workshop make the best Miniatures in the world" and being honest, they don't. They make excellent Miniatures but I wouldn't say they are the best; I could rattle off a list of miniatures companies that are as good or better when viewed as a finished product. But the tooling of the plastic kits is where they really excel. I would say that Games Workshop's tooling is as good, if not better, than most scale model companies. Maybe only beaten by some of the Gundam kits. The stuff Games Workshop can do as a plastic kit is pretty amazing.
    On the subject of the GW lawsuit in the USA. The company was Chapterhouse studios and they weren't just making conversion parts, there were entire models for things GW had written in their lore and didn't make miniatures for. And then there were conversion bits as well. Overall, Chapterhouse studios is widely considered to have "won", the judge ruled in favour of Chapterhouse on more counts than for GW. However it was also pretty much a pyrrhic victory as the costs of fighting the lawsuit left Chapterhouse in a significant amount of debt and they went bankrupt not long after the conclusion of the lawsuit. There were quite a lot of lessons learned by GW in the wake of that and they either rushed out a lot of really poor Miniatures to plug the gaps or removed models from various codices. They got themselves, fairly quickly, into a position where all units described in the rules had models

    Speaking to Pat's question at around the 1 hour mark: I am not a lawyer, this is not legal advice, etc, etc. However, I *did* spend a decade as a law *librarian.* In Alberta, so the exact laws are slightly different than England & Wales (Scotland and Northern Ireland are separate legal jurisdictions and Scotland's system is actually closer to France's than England's, but I digress, which I suppose is on brand...) but the basic principles of IP law are the mostly the same, and the question of "do you *have* to defend your IP?" got asked a lot.
    "Intellectual Property" covers three broad areas: patents, trademarks, and copyright.
    Patents are a way of saying "I invented a new way to do a thing, and no-one else can use this method unless I say so." It doesn't really apply to this video, and I'll be honest I'm not up on the details of patent law, so now I'm moving on.
    Trademarks are a way of saying "My business did this work or built this product." Trademarks have to be unique and identifiable (which is why GW paints have weird-ass names - you can't trademark "white") and are *limited to the area of business that they were created for.* So, obviously, "Citadel Miniatures" is a GW trademark. Another company also involved in the miniatures gaming business probably couldn't make a brand called "Citadel Tiny People" because that's too similar. Depending on the judge, you probably also couldn't make tiny replicas of castles and call that "Citadel Miniatures" because that's probably also too similar. But - again depending on the judge - a company building houses that looked like castles probably *could* call themselves "Citadel Miniatures," because no-one is going to confuse a home construction company with a gaming miniatures company.
    The other thing about Trademark is that if you fail to take action when someone infringes upon it, you lose the trademark. This is what Pat is thinking of; and is why "escalator," "yo-yo," and "thermos" are now words that can be used by any company.
    Copyright is a way of saying "I created this work of creative work," which I know is a horrible sentence but I'm dodging the whole "but is it art?" question. It's the law that says you can't take someone else's book/play/movie/painting/sculpture/whatever and copy it without their permission. If you do, they can sue you. However, one of the key elements in proving copyright infringement is proving that the accused infringer at some point encountered the copyrighted work. This is why Peachy wasn't allowed to have a Star Wars art book at his desk - if it was there, Disney would have a much easier time saying "well of course he knew what a Clone Trooper looked like, he had the reference book right there and you can see it in this video." It's also why most authors, directors, musicians and so on won't read your novel/script/lyrics and offer pointers - too many major creators have been sued for copyright infringement after doing something like that, and their best defence is to be able to say "I never read such things."
    Finally - the Hasbro OGL debacle is old news so I won't get into that in detail, but I did want to note that if any of that *had* ended up in a court it would have been a mix of copyright and trademark infringement and probably would have given a judge a migraine for months.

GW 100% prints and it's easy to spot when you do it yourself. All good though, plastic is FAR less effort even now - which is why I don't 3d print armies / units etc just gear.
