  • Join me on this Nordic Midsummer Night Train Ride as we go travel through the NIght on the South Line (Sørlandsbanen) from Langemyr in Kristiansand to the Freight Terminal at Alnabru in Oslo.
    Even with shifting weather from overcast to heavy rain the Nordic nights are always bright as it never really gets dark here.
    The Southline was built in multiple stages, where the first part was Oslo - Drammen that opened in 1872, Drammen - Kongsberg i 1871, Kongsberg - Kristiansand was built 1920 - 1938, and Egersund - Stavanger was built in 1878. The completion of the line was done by the German occupying forces during World War 2, and the the completion and opening of the line was done on May 1st 1944.

    Hey there awesome people, what do you guys think about the route that goes outside the tunnels?
    Grim story time (readers discretion is adviced) : I once met a moose and two of her calves just around the curve between Slepended and Billingstad going in the opposite direction. It did not go so well for one of them, as it turned and ran back across the tracks after they were blocked by the fence. I clipped the back half of it with a Class 69 C train, and it went spinning in the middle of the track as the Local Service in the opposite direction came... Thankfully it did not suffer for long. A major double hit.

      Ouch! Yeah... it's a part of reality, unfortunately. As you well may know, those who work the Røros- and Nordland lines have (or at least had... there were some legality issues with that, I seem to remember from the news a while ago) a big game rifle in the cab for this very reason, due to them both running through areas that are inaccessible from the road for people from "viltnemda", should something occur. And occur it does indeed, unfortunately.

      @zapfanzapfan 4 дні тому +3

      At least the local scavengers were happy... I drove up to the summer cabin and there was a flock of birds on the side of the road... their buffet still had red in it so it was fresh.

    Awsome video. Night rides is something else. I have never gained job experience on the Sørlandsbanen. Except the stretch from Oslo to Kongsberg. But i have been traveling with old train 705 and 706. Nighttrain between Oslo and Stavanger. Its no joke to drive a train on that line.

      Nope, that is so true. Sørlandsbanen can get to you. LOL it's like it changes you at night, if you let it. hahaha

    2:57:46 That's a great view of the rotary converter station at Nordagutu! For those who don't know, the electrified portion of the Norwegian railway network (as well as Sweden, Germany, Switzerland etc.) uses a 16 2/3 Hz electrical grid rather than the 50 Hz of the "normal" grid. So much of the rail network in Norway uses giant motor generator sets hidden in the mountain to "mechanically" convert the power from 50 Hz to 16 2/3 Hz (by using a motor connected to a generator with 1/3 the number of poles). These old rotary converters are being replaced by modern ones using power electronics many places, but they will remain in use on more rural lines. Luckily, they can run for 100 years if well looked after, really fascinating technology.

    • @RailCowGirl
      @RailCowGirl  4 дні тому +2

      Yep, the converterstations are out right ART. Built inside so it keeps an even temperature all year round.. it's just brilliant :)

      I was wondering about some of the 'stations' along the line, like at Mjøfjell... wasn't sure if they were hydro stations fed by pipes from further up in the mountains (as a few in the USA are). Thanks for pointing that out!

  • @ThePathfinder66

    Nice, the southern route reminds me me of places we went to in Ontario Canada back in the day. Spotted bugs and bats and a deer plus a couple of birds that I think were owls. Also looks like moose country with all the water along the way. I’m only about a quarter of the way through so who knows!

      Oh man, one of the advisories for this line is the wild life, especially during winter when they use the tracks as paths since it's not much snow there. LOL
      During winter this line is painted in red...

    Never seen a video of yours I didn't love and haven't watched on multiple occasions.
    I am very impressed and totally envious of the brain-power it takes, not only to drive such massive loads though the country, but also to 'sign' so many varying routes.
    As always - Thank you.
    ps. not far enough in the video to genuinely add the D4... tag, but I will get there, honest!

      Thank you :) each line had their quirks, but the base rules are all the same :) same signals, same rules, same everything except for areas of safety, like avalanche probe points, where you can expect trespassers etc etc :) and of course the procedures that might deviate from the standards :)

    This will always be my all-time dream job. Wanted to be a train driver since I was little, but a medical condition I developed right before my teens put an end to that dream. I can't even drive a car, let alone a train. But thanks to amazing UA-camrs like yourself, I get to still live out a small part of that dream through your videos - so I thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing what you do and sharing your amazing job with the world!! THANK YOU!! 🥰❤

    "D4122 LYS" Hello RailCowGirl, and Thank You for posting these stunning videos of your journeys! What a job, I'm jealous must be a wonderful career to have to be able to see all that beautiful country and get paid for working. I love your videos and I find them very soothing kind of like a meditation. And I thank you for not embedding any audio files I find 90% of the audio files that UA-camrs post in their videos not only are they totally annoying but I never watch them for more than a minute or two before I'm turning them off. So thank you again I really enjoy relaxing to your videos. FYI, I'm from the USA when I was younger I had a huge HO railroad layout, I hand laid all the tracks and created the scenery and I attempted to make it look very similar to the scenery that you are showing us in your videos. Absolutely Beautiful thank you again!

    I'm just getting underway, here, but I'm already really impressed by the night lighting of the towns you are passing through. Fully shielded light is the only way to go. Too many places in the USA still don't get it, although it is slowly improving as new lighting goes up. Homeowners, though...pffft.

    • @RailCowGirl
      @RailCowGirl  4 дні тому +1

      No, this is not the first. I have had several videos with this. It really depends on the locomotive. Since this is an Swedish built RC locomotive, the placement of the controls are on the left side. This is because Sweden used to have left hand traffic for both road and rail. They still use left hand on rail today, but they switched to right hand traffic for road until 1967 :)

    Thanks for this and the red-eye, your freight operators have derestricted driver hours or you have a companion in the cab? I guess that 4 hours is enough, especially covering the line between Nelaug and Kongsberg with those severe curves and gradient changes, and plenty of brake applications. Trust the controllers gave you an easy ride through Oslo to make up for that. Best wishes!
    Interested to hear about what you operated at 5:13:18 just before entering the yard via the overbridge.

    Beautiful ride. Do you drive mostly at night or is it mixed?

    • @RailCowGirl
      @RailCowGirl  5 днів тому +1

      Mixed, but most freight is moved by night. Reason is simple, supply chain and reduction of storing freight at the terminals. The freight moves from one terminal in the evening and arrive at the destination in the morning. Trucks pock the freight up and delivers it directly to stores etc in their opening hours.
