The Stay-Puft Marshmallow scene is my favorite scene from any movie ever. From that moment when Gozer asks the Ghostbusters to pick their opponent, I was glued to the TV as a kid & it still gives me goosebumps today. The reaction of Ray when he realizes that he has just chosen a giant marshmallow man is comedy gold. Then Stay-Puft appears & it's just amazing. This scene doesn't get enough recognition because this is the scene that made the original Ghostbusters a beloved classic. If you remove it & just have them fighting Gozer for 5 min., it doesn't have the same payoff as Stay-Puft. How many other films have taken a fictional character, put them on the screen for less than 3 min., & turned that fake character into a universally recognized character that will forever be loved by the fans. Oh, & he's supposed to be main villain too.
I like that he's mostly hidden for a few steps, then revealed to Ray's narration. Why Lucas didn't do that for Jabba the Hutt is beyond me. He's just there, without an over-the-shoulder glimpse first. Then he went back to put him in the special edition, and even the prequel.
I'm glad Dan Aykroyd stuck to his guns, because the reveal of the Stay Puft Marshmallow man is one of my all time favorite comedic moments in a movie EVER. It's just so damn genius.
Effects like this are so much more meaningful because we're not exactly sure how it was done. With CG, you know it's simply done on a computer every single time.
@@sampeacaml9307 They're a genre of films designed to use a certain aspect of it for appeal. For example, Blaxploitation uses the fact that the main character is black in advertisements.
@Flint McFreely Apparently there are a number of subgenres you've never heard of. Like slasher. Not exactly art house cinema - and so homogenized and predictable that they spawned another subgenre: the mock slasher film (starting with Scream). And if you think CGI is homogenized or easy, you haven't been paying attention. You're like the old guy with the lawn, saying how easy kids have things nowadays. Things can be done in CGI that CANNOT be done in practical effects, making more variety /possible/ - and there are just as many lazy directors now as there ever were, not more than, using formulas instead. You're perfectly welcome to not spend your money, you know - just don't expect everyone else to believe in the "good ol' days" when the actual evidence is available for viewing. There are a great many excellent older films, going right back to the beginning - but they aren't excellent because they lack computers. They are excellent because of how well what was available was utilized to tell and/or enhance the story. Just. like. movies. made. today.
You can really only see these kind of interesting behind the scenes making of clips for movies made before 1995. Anything later is just "Yeah, we got a bunch of computers to do it."

hi, i'm sorry for answering you so late but i'm in my first year at an sfx makeup and practical effects school which means... i'm no computer. cgi will never replace visual effects and all those stuff as it is... plain and only good to use in background or combined to practical effects. jurassic park was made with both cgi and practical effects and puppeteers. i know both legend movie (ridley scott's) and jurassic park were made before your "vague cutoff date" but that means nothing. look at the remake of predator. cgi is not that good. and look at a lot of characters nowadays, lots are made with visual effects and sfx makeup. my point is, you can't use cgi everywhere and say "oh i just used a bunch of computers to do it" cause it's not true
I love Mr. Stay Puft! I would have loved to have been able to be in the theater during the initial opening of Ghostbusters and witnessed the reaction by the crowd to seeing him on film for the first time...it must have been surprising (yet funny as hell) to be sitting there in the theater watching the climax and suddenly see a giant evil marshmallow man walking the street!
nilloc2468100 This is the second ep of Art of the Scene but all our film history/scene study/adaptation comparison style stuff is on Wednesdays though, they kind of go in a circle.
This movie stills holds up today, its fantastic, one of my favorite films. I also don't know what the big issue with the second one was, I thought it was also a good film. Too bad it will probably be ten years before they reboot it again and we get a film worthy of the name, if the franchise ever recovers.
There was a time where I liked Ghostbusters 2 more than the first one. Now I see them as equal but when I was growing up they switched places a couple of times as all time favorites #1 and #2. Never any lower. And as far a sequels go, Ghostbusters 2 is probably one of the better examples of what a sequel should be. The Stay Puff Marshmallow Man terrified me when I first saw Ghostbusters as a child. I didn’t find him silly at all. His facial expressions, his growls! They definitely made the right call.
Looking back, the marshmallow man was a pretty risky move. The fact that is was a subtle cross between the Michelin Man and the Pilsbury Doughboy was a joke that the audience not only got and appreciated, but LOVED it. This film wouldn't be as big without that scene.
Definitely do something from The Shining, either the bar scene with Lloyd or Nicolson's "I'm not going to hurt you" speech going up the stairs. Thanks : )
I would love to see a video that shows the stuff that was directly "inspired" by scenes from Battleship Potemkin. So many great scenes from other great films give direct homage.
wow! awesome video, me likes! hmmm... another iconic scene review? there many... but how about Ripley vs Alien queen in personalize mobile walking crane from Alien 2?
How about some of the effects from the 1966 John Frankenheimer film, "Grand Prix" ... especially the in-car shots and the opening crash through the haybales into the harbor at Monaco?
I'm fascinated by Akroyd's original script which I believe not only was much bigger but had Ghostbusters as an everyday emergency service as common as the fire dept. I'd really have liked to see some of that make its way into a Ghostbusters 3 than this horrible re-boot that's coming.
OK, some suggestions for more scenes (since ya ask so sweetly): * BRAZIL (1985) Tuttle rescuing Lowry from Information Retrieval. Or pick just about anything. * PANIC ROOM (2002) The propane gas scene! * FIGHT CLUB (1999) The smiley-face fire on the office high-rise. * THE HOLY MOUNTAIN (1973) The spinning room with the nine planet avatars. Really, pick anything, we just want to see you pin down Jodorowsky for an interview. * INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM (1984) The minecart chase. Of course. * NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959) The Mount Rushmore chase. * ROSEMARY'S BABY (1968) The, um, fertilization scene. Dream. As much as I like these videos I feel like they sometimes miss the "scene" part. Here, for instance, there's so much focus on Mr, Stay Puft that the scene featuring him doesn't really get discussed in terms of how it works as a complete scene.
I'd love you to do the "massacre scene" (or whatever you wanna call it) from Taxi Driver. Or possibly the iconic baptism montage from the godfather. And some parts about it gives you goosebumps when that 100 foot blob man is in that final battle
Like for example
when he makes it to the building from that veiw and puts on the "I'm gonna getcha" look
Gets blasted by their weapons
Blows flames at them while caught on fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
And gets blown up at the end along with the doorway gate and building top
💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥
Those scenes fit in kinda nicely in the finale battle
Like the gargoyle like dogs roaring
Being zapped when they ordered gozer to leave ⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡
When they fired and she leaped into mid-air
And the earthquake when she makes them choose
And the rest till that building explosion at the end 💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥
U gotta admit for a silly idea for a destructor form
It does get rather thrilling
And once u understand the story then it doesn't hurt to throw it in there
And when it comes to the sequel
The bottom line is
"Focus more on the creativity and even use your imagination"
Leave that criticism from political correctness issues out of it
The scene when the shark finally pops up out of the water in Jaws.
Word Unheard wat why
I thought ghost busters 2 was awesome! But still 1st one was better
GB2 has a soft spot in my heart to be sure.
