What impressed me most about this scene, is that it set up the tension for the rest of the film. From that point on, I always expected another "Chestbuster" scene. It never happened. But it kept me on the edge of my seat. To this day, when I watch the film, I always turn my head away when I know this scene is coming.
When they're first looking for it, they, like us, are expecting the creature to still be small. Brett even remarks that the electric cattle prod he made shouldn't hurt it too much.
Did you see the film in the UK or the US? If you saw it in the UK you were too young as it was X rated and you would have needed to be 18. If you saw it in the US you would've needed to be accompanied by an adult as it was rated R.
I saw this in the movies as a kid and it was definitely the biggest freak-out in a theater I have ever witnessed. Everybody was screaming in horror. It was so different and so well done.
I saw Alien with a friend when it first came out in 1979 on acid. Oddly enough the LSD didn't make the film any more frightening but rather added amazingly to the sense of otherworldliness. The Giger sets absolutely blew my mind and still do.
honestly it doesnt have the right ring to it like alien vs predator does, but star beast vs hunter actually doesn't sound half bad lol (AVP should still STAY AVP of course )
Alien is the one movie that I can't get over. I saw it 25 years after its release and it scarred me. I still see nightmares about it occasionally. It's like an annual thing. Once a year I wake up in sweat after being hunted by the alien. One of the rare movies that really, really stood the test of time. Creepy as hell.
I'm 2 years too late and was born in the wrong century (in 2001) but I can definitely understand what you mean. I watched all of the classics like Tremor, The Thing, and etc.... Nothing has got to be more terrifying than being stuck on a ship with the perfect killing machine...
This was awesome, definitely continue doing more! Especially stuff regarding practical effects, as they're a dying art and the best type of effects in my opinion. We need more practical effects in movies in this day and age!
+biohalo87freak anyone else notice HARRY DEAN Stanton still has a ciggy in his mouth during that scene!? yes I did really enjoy this iconic scene scared the bejeesus out of me as a kid!! ENJOY!!
***** Maybe that's meant to have a subconscious impact on us in that scene since it's phallic and it's coming through at us [and this sounded better in my head!!] interesting to see how much work goes into this ENJOY!!
i read this comment and decided to watch some child birth videos because i was curious. After watching a couple, the suggestion lead me to "how to finger a girl", which led to a video about doggy style, which led to a video about missionary, then finally it led me to a 15 minute video of a girl getting her vagina waxed. UA-cam is a bad place for curious people lol
RobbyRaccoon It is her, here's another photo: meet.berovbros.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/giger-debbie-harry.jpg They worked together briefly in the early 80's. Harry had dyed her hair at the time, so she wasn't so much a Blondie at the time ;)
As someone who became intimately with this film by a chance relationship with the creators, I found your piece incredibly comprehensive and enjoyable. Thanks to the Maker for you guys.
That scene is still one where I want to avoid eating at the time, I've seen the movie so many times and that scene will always make me queasy, it's so well done. The movie as a whole was excellent and is still the best sci fi horror movie out.
The set and the way people actually seemed to LIVE in it - brilliant. It just made the movie for me. Far beyond how freaky terrifying that film was, it was the set itself that lingered with me.
For me, the freakiest part of the scene is that Kane's hands are still twitching even after the creature has emerged from his chest, meaning he hasn't died yet.
My favorite scene is the part where Ash’s head is just sitting on the table and there’s this awkward silence that lasts less than half of a minute yet if feels like it lasts forever It’s just so eerie and makes you feel like maybe all hope truly is lost
My dad saw this in theaters and he said that people were actually leaving the theater after the chestburster happened. He also said that some people were yelling when it happened.
Some of the best shock value scenes were made with the director omitting details of what the actors would see/experience. Case in point: the projectile vomit scene in The Exorcist.
The way the set smelled from rotting blood and butcher parts, certainly created an environment for the legendary group of actors to witness the smell of Kane's death.
Dune is one of the most influential movies of all time, the fact that it was never made makes it even more impressive. Jodoroswki's Dune is a must see for all film bufs. The story just defies belief.
I'm loving these guys. If you haven't done one yet, can you guys do one on the fight between Luke and Vader in the Empire Strikes Back. I've always felt there's some Kurosawa inspiration behind that cinematography on that scene (which in turn is inspired by Ford), but never seen a true break down on it.
CineFix that was AWESOME!!!!! can you PLEASE do either The Godfather Baptism, TheCabin in The Woods Ending or The Starchild scene from 2001: A Space Odyssey for the next episode
A L I E N We all know the best quote of the movie is "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH" (by the chestburster) easily deserved best oscar for leading act...alien...
CineFix Maybe you guys can do a written/visual correction or something (assuming you can't redo the voiceover)? Give her proper credit? But yes, great video otherwise. :)
Great video. You guys should tackle maybe the first time Sean Connery uttered his iconic spy catchphrase (though Craig still delivers it best in my opinion.)
These is NO comparison. When I was 12,,my oldest sister took me to see this movie at the theater. I RAN OUT. TO this day, this scene is untouched as the best shocker scene of all time.
Hadn’t realized that O’Bannon had passed away over a decade ago. Happy that I’ve had the good fortune of having experienced his work but the man died too young. I can only imagine how much more he could have contributed to the art and craft of the movies.
The 70's was the era of grunge in Sci-fi: Blade Runner, Star Wars, and Alien as the best examples. I love the more pristine and clean look of 60's science fiction, but Alien especially really benefits from more dirty feeling locations.
Alien was the BEST movie of the franchise! The movie Theater at 8:17 is the Colonial Theater located here in Phoenixville PA, which was used in "The Blob" with Steve McQueen. Every July, we have "Blob Fest" and recreate the scene where everyone is running out.
Anyone remember "Squirmals"? You got them inside a certain sugary cereal. A high school friend and I both had gotten them and each of us independently related those fuzzy action toys on fishing line to the creature in the Chestburster Scene from the original Alien movie. CGI didn't really yet exist at the time, so many spcl fx were still physical puppets. Those who are old enough to remember those things will get what I'm talking about. Back then it was the height of hilarity between us.
I love this new series! You guys should do the transformation of the Brundlefly. Or something from Who Framed Roger Rabbit, those fx still hold up today.
At the time, movies like 'Logans Run', 'Andromeda Strain' and 'Colossus, The Forbin Project' had people expecting COMPLETELY different than, well... a carnivorous monster. We just weren't expecting this. That's what was so shocking. By the time we realized that the 'alien' was going to be a creature, it was too late to leave the theater. And let me tell you... people were scared. Really, really scared.
What impressed me most about this scene, is that it set up the tension for the rest of the film. From that point on, I always expected another "Chestbuster" scene. It never happened. But it kept me on the edge of my seat. To this day, when I watch the film, I always turn my head away when I know this scene is coming.
This movie and john carpenters the thing will always stand the test of time and blow it away
When they're first looking for it, they, like us, are expecting the creature to still be small. Brett even remarks that the electric cattle prod he made shouldn't hurt it too much.
I was 14 years old when this movie came out and this scene scared the living shit out of me... I had nightmares for weeks...truly iconic for its time
RICH REVIEWS
Hell, it'd be amazing today

Jegory they're amazing! Especially someone who loves the see bts stuff :)
I saw this in the movies as a kid and it was definitely the biggest freak-out in a theater I have ever witnessed. Everybody was screaming in horror. It was so different and so well done.
CGI has its place but this is real artistry IMO. This movie always scares the crap out of me. It's so atmospheric.

perhaps, you've been robbed on that acid deal LOL
if Alien and Predator stuck to their original names, the movie 'Alien vs Predator' would've been 'Star Beast vs Hunter'
honestly it doesnt have the right ring to it like alien vs predator does, but star beast vs hunter actually doesn't sound half bad lol (AVP should still STAY AVP of course )
That sounds...interesting...
I saw Alien when I was in my early teens. The movie still gives me the creeps. Unlike anything else really.
Hah! Did he show it to you when you were 13 too? I saw it despite my parents advicing me to not do it.
I guess we need some nostalgia terror aswell!

Eric Durant yeah we're big fans of practical effects here so definitely be going to go more in depth there!
Like the werewolf transformation in 'An American werewolf in London'
Cartwright's "Oh, Goooooeeed!" Scream is the best part of the scene.
I love how the alien looks around and then was like “alright am heading out.”
I like how the man who designed the Alien chestburster is so freaked out by it he cant look at it..Now Thats Dedication to Your Craft.
Ah, the miracle of birth...
i want one about the face melting in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Legoindy7734 It's on the dvd in the special features

Recently I watched a couple of real childbirth videos on UA-cam - and I have to say the Chestburster scene is far less horrific!
i read this comment and decided to watch some child birth videos because i was curious. After watching a couple, the suggestion lead me to "how to finger a girl", which led to a video about doggy style, which led to a video about missionary, then finally it led me to a 15 minute video of a girl getting her vagina waxed. That scene from Spaceballs was hilarious! XD
Vernedi the fact that its actually john hurt makes it even better
As someone who became intimately with this film by a chance relationship with the creators, I found your piece incredibly comprehensive and enjoyable. Thanks to the Maker for you guys.
Never understand why people give clips like this a "Thumbs Down"..
Someone that upset about this?
This comment has not aged
This movie fucked me up as a kid. So many nightmares, and so much chest pain just from thinking about chestbursters.
The Thing and Alien are the best horror movies
WHAT ABOUT THE FLY?
tiagovalen if you like both you should play dead space
It's basicly a mix between them
That scene is still one where I want to avoid eating at the time, I've seen the movie so many times and that scene will always make me queasy, it's so well done. The movie as a whole was excellent and is still the best sci fi horror movie out.
The funny thing is I got an Ad for McDonalds strawberry smoothies before this video.
That could say a lot for their milkshakes, I always did find them very grainy.
The set and the way people actually seemed to LIVE in it - brilliant. It just made the movie for me. Far beyond how freaky terrifying that film was, it was the set itself that lingered with me.
A Classic way to add real flare to a meal with friends! :)
being killed by a Chestburster looks so painful. (it gave me chills 😯)
5:17 I didn't know the aliens head could be any more phallic.
This is wonderful.
NOICE! :)
PS. Big Fans of Squaresville
+Mr. Matt Enlow no it isn´t ! It´s not accurate
For me, the freakiest part of the scene is that Kane's hands are still twitching even after the creature has emerged from his chest, meaning he hasn't died yet.
I'm pretty sure that was just rigor mortis.
This is an awesome series!!
Giger has joined his Alien in space.🖤🙏🖤
"Aaaaaoh Gawd!!!!"
3:06 that transition from a happy guitar tune to screaming I love it
Kinda cool how H.R Giger was heavily influenced by H.P Lovecraft which is one of my favorite writers.
My favorite scene is the part where Ash’s head is just sitting on the table and there’s this awkward silence that lasts less than half of a minute yet if feels like it lasts forever
It’s just so eerie and makes you feel like maybe all hope truly is lost
Cinefix, Are you guys going to produce any more "Art of the Scene" videos?!?! PLEASE DO!!! These are so enjoyable to watch!
I absolutely adore the cramped, utilitarian and dark atmosphere of the Nostromo.
This video was excellent. Clear, short, but very educative, and that last aspect was the most important. Thank you !
Can you guys please do an 'Art of the Scene' for Uma Thurmans Crazy 88 fight sequence in Kill Bill ???!!!!!
Your Sigourney Weaver Impression is the best I've ever heard.
My dad saw this in theaters and he said that people were actually leaving the theater after the chestburster happened. He also said that some people were yelling when it happened.
When he bursted out of his chest he was like "Whatever, I'm out of here."
Amazing how well this movie has aged.
That was awesome! Still have yet to see these movies.
Boooo
Sorry bro, just dont tell bigbadguy ';)
It's a must see
I bet it is considering your username xD
Well I am a fan

It was really interesting watching this when I hadn’t seen the film and then coming back after and appreciating it even more.
Dune is one of the most influential movies of all time, the fact that it was never made makes it even more impressive.
Jodoroswki's Dune is a must see for all film bufs. The story just defies belief.
Alien has the best practical effects for creatures of all time. The xenomorphs are so lifelike. Nothing else even comes close.

It is Veronica Cartwright. Not Victora Cartwright. :D :)
The behind the scenes info is informative but I was expecting a shot by shot breakdown of sorts but nvm it's fine.
My absolute favorite movie.

I love Giger's art ever since I once visited an exhibition of his back in school days
I really like that your show put such a strong emphasis on the team aspect in movie making...(read this with german accent :) )
