    A fast moving snowstorm hit Northern Colorado overnight with blizzard warnings and winter weather warnings covering most of Eastern Colorado. This video is from the Greeley and Evans Colorado area which received 5.5 inches of snow overnight, coupled with the wind in the rural areas which made for a very slick morning commute. This is the first measurable snowfall in Northern Colorado, and seems to have caught some drivers off guard.
    Scenes:
    First part shot near Evans, Colorado
    Clip 1 Long shot of a ice covered road and a red loses control and slides into the ditch.
    Clip 2 Silver Scion minivan goes off road and crashes into a power pole.

    Clip 4 Dark colored SUV starts to slide out of control but regains control.

    People overestimate their cars, their tires, and their driving capabilities, and many use all-season tires, it's like that everywhere you come.
    I used to have all-season tires on my MK2 Golf and they were surprisingly good in the winter at -20c to -30c, they were also good in the summer but then came winter again and they sucked..
    People need to understand that tires get worse after each heat cycle and come winter it's usually time to buy new tires.. So why not go with one set of summer tires and one set of winter tires, it doesn't need to be that expensive..
    I change them two at the time every season, not because I need to but it doesn't cost as much and that way I know I have good tires all the time and I can give away my "old" ones to someone who can't afford new.

      Steve Plasonja Sorry but no, all season tires isn't just a thing in the US. I live in Sweden and TONS of people use them. It mostly depends on where you live, the further south you get, the more common all season tires get.

      True, but I drive on all-seasons and don't have the problems demonstrated above. The acrobatics we see in this video can easily be attributed to "too fast for conditions".

      I used to 'survive' by driving on summer tires in the winter only because I couldn't really afford to buy a second set of all-season or snow tires. I'm older and wiser now. I have a set of summer and winter tires for both my wife's car and mine. Was worth every penny.

    • @peterkmm100
      @peterkmm100 8 років тому

      +Dan K It definitely is worth it! I use Continental TS-850s in winter and Dunlop SportResponse in summer on a compact car. And im very happy with these tires.

    • @Great_America
      @Great_America 8 років тому

      Awesome! I use Michelin X-Ice Xi3 tires and have them on both my car and the wife's van. I have lost the times those tires have saved our lives. I used to drive on all-season tires in the winter time, but a few years ago I had a couple close calls. The next winter I decided to invest the money and buy the snow tires. I will NEVER EVER drive on all-season tires in the winter again. Snow tires are literally day and night compared to all-season tires, especially on icy covered and deeper snow covered road conditions.

    This dangerous conditions is actually made because of the roadsalt. The salty snow-slush makes the tires aqua planning (slush-planning) but it happens in much lower speeds (as we can see in the video). If the road was not salted but only plowed and sanded, these accident would not happen. Say no to road salting!

    • @peterkmm100
      @peterkmm100 8 років тому

      +Mr Glenn I dont like salt on the road. Its make your the chassis steel corrode quick and gives drivers a false feeling of security.

    • @patrickcarey393
      @patrickcarey393 8 років тому

      +Mr Glenn I agree this is the main factor causing loss of control along with poor tires and driving techniques. Most jurisdictions spread salt while plowing before the snowfall has ended, causing a build up of slush when fresh snow falls on the salt. While snow is falling they should spread sand if there is an ice problem, or in most cases nothing, and salt after the snowfall has ended. Slush is the main reason for loss of control more often then snow or ice. Driving in snow is much safer than driving in slush. I think I tend to be more alert driving in snow than in melting snow which is contrary to what should be happening. Most modern vehicles are pretty well impervious to salt if they are washed underneath once in a while and a salted road becomes safer much faster than a sanded road. So that's my two bits worth.

    You know, I don't think anybody here appreciates that plow driver. The dude purposefully maneuvered just slightly and slowed down just enough to not go dumping a load of dirty snow all over the crashed van. That's a cool dude in my book.

    • @snowrocket
      @snowrocket 8 років тому

      +peterkmm100 You might be right. I think there was possibly something evil on that part of the road that sucks lighter vehicles to their right. I noticed though that the driver didn't seem to make much effort to turn to the right AFTER coming up off the shoulder's deep snow. At that point, going straight across the highway was the ONLY thing that was going to happen. I'm just glad they didn't hit another vehicle or get hurt.

    • @peterkmm100
      @peterkmm100 8 років тому

      +snowrocket It looks to me like theres a patch of ice right beneath the sleet. All vehicles are sliding to the right side of the road. And there is strong wind from the side as seen by the snow been blown away. The van is pushed by the wind and crashes. And thats a heavy one, too. You really need good winter tires and go slow, especially downhill. I use Continental TS 850 on a subcompact this winter and they are doing great. Why are all-season tire that popular, i dont know. All-seasons are bad in summer and bad in winter in my opinion.

    • @snowrocket
      @snowrocket 8 років тому

      +peterkmm100 Good observation about the wind; I hadn'd picked up on that. I too initially thought that was a Ford Econoline van. It's not. It's a Scion Xb, a rather light car. I agree on the tires, though. Unless you're broke, four snow tires for the winter are safer if it snows much where you live. It's funny how most northern Canadians, Alaskans, and Europeans agree with this.

  • @honestycounts9352
    @honestycounts9352 9 років тому

    Bald All-Season Tires = that's what did that first guy in. If he had winter tires (with good tread depth on them) he would have no problems at all. I use Pirelli's 'Winter Ice Control' winter tires on my car (Toyota Corolla), they are the best I've ever tried, and I've tried most of the brands out there. I mostly just need them on packed snow, but packed snow often has an icy layer on top of it, that's why this Pirelli tire is so good for me. But they are fairly soft rubber and they will ware out pretty quickly. When I used winter tires I went into the ditch just like him, but I had a shovel and 2 sets of 'Traction Aid' bars in my truck that I used to get my car back onto the road. After that lesson I have been using winter tires ever since, and no more problems.

    Speed Kills ! Slow Down People ! And Be Smart, Turn Your Lights On When Driving In Snow Or Rain. Drive with your Full Lights On, Not just running lights because they only light up the front of some cars. With full lights on It will turn on all lights in your car including the rear ones, that way people coming up from behind you may see you somewhat better. Just my opinion and Please Buckle Up and don't exit car until safe to do so. I have lived In a snow state for 55 Years so I think my advice could help someone i hope.

    Out here on the mid-Atlantic coastal plain, there are years where we get very little ice on the roads at all, but it does happen more than people may think. My workplace is in a fairly exposed strip of land, so that any blowing snow there is after an accumulating fall usually winds up back on the pavement, icing over after melting and making things _treacherous_.

    20 years ago in a snowstorm I came across a new Grand Cherokee that went over a ditch and a stone wall,before he stopped.The first thing he said was-I don't know what happened,I had it in 4 wheel drive! Then he got pissed when I laughed at him! And I was driving a rear wheel drive Ford Granada.

    I miss watching it snow, and being able to ski, ride the snowmobiles cross county ski but I do not miss driving on the icy streets. It would take my thirty minutes to get to work without the snow but with snow and icy roads it could take almost two hours because I would have to use the main roads and not the short cuts

      Thanks alethea. Your vehicles must suffer from the salt I reckon. That must be a bit of a nuisance for you, although sliding down a bank is potentially a surprise not needed either. Thanks for that mate. None of that nonsense in the tropics. Just stuff that wants to eat you here. My cars all good mate.
