    Snowstorm in Bend, Oregon causes major travel issues. Many vehicles were stuck in the deep snow, many other motorists struggled to drive through the snow. A number of vehicles were crashed as well. Heavy snow continued to fall, and accumulations were high. Plow crews did their best to try and keep up with the snowfall. People worked hard alongside ems to help others struggling in the snow.

    I remember this snowstorm. It was my brothers birthday, and my grandma wanted us to come over. But at the time, my mom had a two-wheel-drive car, so we decided to wait until the snow was over. That was two days later. I want another winter storm like this though. It was epic. Besides the shoveling xD

    winter tires are your friend folks

    • @snowrocket
      @snowrocket 7 років тому +15

      Good point, but here's my observation: Everyone who can afford a car 2008 or newer that lives where it snows CAN afford winter tires. My car is a 1999, cost $3000, and I have them. I do NOT make much money. With the exception of the Saturn sedan, everything else that was stuck was far newer/more expensive than what I'm driving. It's often a matter of priorities.

    • @rundownaxe

      El Roquero 650$ or thenrisk of damaging the car that you are still paying. I'd spend the 650.

    • @rundownaxe
      @rundownaxe 7 років тому +7

      I,m not denying that they are expensive. I'm just saying that the cost of repairing the car after an accident is likely to be much higher than simply buying snow tires.
      I will agree that the best solution is to not drive in snowy conditions and that winter tires will not prevent 100% of accidents. But they are still a good investment if you ask me.
      Besides, I'm canadian. I am obligated to put snow tires by law anyways.

      Snow tires, decent tires period are a lifesaver in storms like these but few have them for whatever reasonings. IF folks want to do things the ''right way'' & save money they would go down to their local ''junk yard'', salvage lot and buy a set of used tires and rims with either snow tires or decent used to newer tires on them for half the cost of buying them new at a tires dealer.. Also their are many styles of tires chains, cables now available for cheap online if people ever thought ahead.. Stay safe peoples..

    • @l337pwnage
      @l337pwnage 7 років тому +8

      Well...they are using a chain, so you already know they ain't too bright.
      I actually wouldn't worry about the chain breaking here, though, as they don't have enough traction. It could come unhooked or unattached and go flying, tho.
      That budget guy is gonna be very unhappy if he gets charged for the bumper he wrecked @ 7:50.
      Notice you can see the tow hooks @ 6:05 & 7:50 but these morons don't know what they are for.
      Additionally, because they hooked low on their truck and high on the CMV it keeps lifting their backend up causing them to lose traction and putting weight on the front of the CMV making it harder to drag sideways.
      Entertaining to watch, that's for sure.

    Looks like the "ridiculously resilient ridge" has finally broken down. For the last 2-3 winters the West Coast has been under a ridge, while the East Coast was stuck under a trough with frequent cold and heavy snow. So far this winter the opposite has been true. We'll see if it lasts.

    Drop down into low and ease the gas to not spin or spin less, ease the gas when you start to move, i.e. don’t gun it 😅 , it creates a layer of water/ice that’s super slick and you lose your traction as soon as your tires spin. Same goes with locking the brakes and turning, you can’t.

    If the camera guys are the ones in the white Ford pickup recovering the rental van, you are making some very dangerous choices in your recoveries and someone is going to get seriously injured. The person in the bed of the truck is in the line of fire if that chain slips or breaks, people are far too close to the vehicles during recovery, and putting the chain over the bumper instead of under it ensures that it will fly up in the air if something goes wrong instead of down to the ground. You have no safety damper on the chain (like a floor mat). Please learn how to help people safely for both your own sake and theirs. Get the right gear and learn how to use it. Yanking on the chain is asking for trouble, in these conditions you need a snatch strap/kinetic recovery rope if a slow pull isn't enough.

    • @johnkolodzie9888
      @johnkolodzie9888 7 років тому +2

      well if they need some one in the back to help the he should add weight to the back i have 5-600 in the back of my truck it's need if cause the back of trucks are to light to get traction when weather is that bad

    • @BlindIo42
      @BlindIo42 7 років тому +5

      John Kolodzie An easy way to get temporary traction that won't risk death or maiming is to shovel snow into the bed of the truck. When we do a recovery we avoid using metal parts that can become missiles, open the hood of the vehicle in back (or both if using a winch) because chains, winch lines, and straps have come through windshields. I know the person was in the back for weight, but I don't think they realize that being near that chain can be fatal, especially the way it was rigged and with the yanking from the tow vehicle. An elastic snatch strap would allow the pickup to build up some energy and gently recover the delivery truck safely.

      I have seen rope Snap under pressure I know it can kill anyone rope/chain/strap all can kill if under pressure and break, pulling a anker out from a boat lying the rope broke breaking some ones truck window but could well of killed someone to

    • @TheLittlered1961
      @TheLittlered1961 7 років тому

      Blinddo42: and John Kolodzie, Please watch Myth Busters. The most dangerous is a rope. It gives the greatest stretch, therefore is most dangerous. Cable is second, but very little stretch. Third is chain, almost no stretch, least harmful. This is not to say that they can not harm, but the last two are the least likely to even break skin. I have broken many a cable and have yet to see one wipe enough to do serious injury. The funny thing is a snatch strap can do more injury because it can stretch more. This is to a body, not the vehicle.

    • @BlindIo42
      @BlindIo42 7 років тому +1

      John Bango That is in the event of a break, not a slip of the hook (which is dangerous anyway). Even a chain can be dangerous in the right conditions, so not being near it is a safe bet. It is no different than keeping the safety on a firearm AND keeping it pointed in a safe direction. You don't want to rely on a "safe" failure.

    A chain in not what you want to use for pulling a vehicle out. Plenty of videos here to show the damage they can do when the let go. If that chain would have broke on the moving truck side it could have seriously injured or killed the person in the back of the pickup. Get a good quality recovery strap with loops, not hooks, and some D ring shackles. Only use the D rings if there is no other way attach it to a vehicle. Straps release much less energy in the event they fail. Can't go wrong with Warn or ARB kit, the Chinese stuff is not load tested and questionable quality.

      Throw a jacket or blanket over the center of the chain and that will stop it from flying wildly when it breaks or lets go.
      I ONLY use chains, for 37 years here in northern vt. If you use them properly its not a problem. I've sat there and let people take out their rear windows, tailgate, rear lights. Etc. When they give up, I hook up 2500 with a logging chain, throw my jacket over and away we go. Never in 37 years has any of my vehicles, or those I'm pulling out, been damaged from a broken chain. And I have broken chains.
      I watched a guy lose his tailgate, back window, rear view mirror, and windshield. While was gone to the hospital for laserations to head, I put his truck in neutral and pulled it out.

      I was surprised to find the following on MDOT's website:
      MCL 257.710 of the Michigan Vehicle Code covers the use of tire chains, and states that a person may "use a tire chain of reasonable proportion upon a vehicle when required for safety because of snow, ice, or other condition tending to cause a vehicle to skid." If used, the chain must not come in contact with the surface of the roadway.

    • @28jrich
      @28jrich 7 років тому

      aguyandhiscomputer us u can't use them on any roadway, there for it is illegal, they don't even sell them at the autoparts stores

    Call your local salvage yard, junk yard and buy a set of ''used to new tires'' and rims with snow tires already mounted on them many times! Boneyards will have plenty sitting around and their much cheaper than buying new and then you will have summer and winter tires for your rides. Slow down during bad road conditions so you can smile at the fools who go flying past you and end up in the ditch later..

      There's snowplows...but here's the problem..the studded tires that everyone is complaining about people not using? They tear up the roads and leave deep grooves in the highway...the snow plow would either tear the roads up more or be useless because of the grooves. Shrugs..they more use the plows on residential streets and block all the driveways so people can't get out. Snow plows here are a freakin nuisance.

      barrie Williams People are morons and also to damn greedy to part with enough money to buy decent tires even for summer time let alone for winter, walk through any busy parking lot here in America and it's almost scary how many cars you will see with tires that should be replaced because they are at their wear limits, people run the damn things till they are nearly glass smooth, like who cares if they are worn way past the wear bars in the tread just run them till they pop, NOT me when my summer tires get down to the last third of tread life I start shopping for new, and as soon as the studs in my studded tires wear level to the treadsurface and the tread hits about half life off they come and new goes on, I also don't buy the cheapest crap that I can find either, I do the exact opposite and get the absolute best I can get my hands on, I can say this about doing things that way...I have NEVER had to get dug out of a ditch or needed a tow or push to get going again and I dont think I ....Oh hell I can't even remember the last time I ever had tire trouble like a flat or anything, The combination of really good tires and the Ford 4x4 pickup I own has never failed me. P.S. I also carry tire chains for all four tires and practice the lost art of chaining up if it get really bad out (I live in a place that snow is VERY abundent in the winter time to say the least).

    • @hitssquad

      AWD doesn't keep you from crashing. Michelin Xi3 tires do. If that's not enough, you can put on tire cables. No need for AWD.

    • @jamesfenton7338
      @jamesfenton7338 7 років тому +1

      BC gets more rain and snow than we do on a regular basis, but last year Crater Lake got about 260 inches of snow. They just didn't have equipment or the budget for decent snow removal in Bend. It's high desert and is usually in the "Rain Shadow" of the three mountain ranges between it and the coast. When it does snow, you are on your own. It's also known as "The Oregon Outback" and you need to be prepared for anything. Tow services are overwhelmed, and so is the highway dept, this is typical for Oregon. They take care of the passes, but not the high desert. Where I live now in Klamath County it's the same problem, when we get dumped on, it's every man for themselves.

    AWD and 4X4 mean nothing if you don't have the right tires for the application And, the ability to drive in those conditions. The systems won't do it for you.
    Decades ago when SUV's first became popular, the ditches were full of them on my way to Vermont to ski. You get all four wheels spinning because of to much power application and speed and those systems will Put you off the road.
