    Chains are dangerous for that, they don't stretch much but they still hold a lot of energy. Those tow points are only really for low energy towing of the vehicle, not for hitting 80,000 pounds hanging on the end of a chain. If you are going to do a kinetic recovery, hitting the pull with some speed on, you need a kinetic recovery rope. Yankum, or something similar. Ratchet straps and chains have so little stretch at breaking point that they can easily break because the force needed to stop a 4 ton SUV in half an inch is extremely high.

    There are likely to be some ski resorts that remain open into June. There's likely to be significant flooding during the spring runoff, particularly if there is a period of above normal temps with warm rain. This isn't just Cali as my home in Utah is facing similar problems this spring. I don't know if Lake Powell and Lake Mead will get anywhere near full pool, I kind of doubt it, so even with all this snow we are still going to be below average levels for Powell and Mead.
    Lake Powell is currently at 22% of full pool and is only 1.5 feet higher than the low point which was just a couple weeks ago. Lake Mead is actually 15 feet below where it was last year at this time. The watershed area for the Colorado has seen some rain this winter but not as much as Cali has and the deficit is so great it could take a few years of weather like this to fix.

    • @johnchedsey1306
      @johnchedsey1306 Рік тому

      I read in The Colorado Sun (I think) that the expectation is that Lake Powell should rise a bit by September but Lake Mead will still be very low. It probably would take 5-10 of these of winters to refill both lakes, if not longer. I hope that the Colorado River basin states realize this is just a one year pause and everyone still needs to come up with a long term solution under the assumption that there'll be drought conditions most years.

Thirty-one years of driving a truck, chaining up in weather like this, taking it slow and easy, gets you to your delivery safely. But, today's truck drivers are not trained for properly & safely driving in snow and ice. Too many untrained new drivers out here.

Highway 70 is the lowest year around highway over the SIerras. It does have some restrictions on trucks because of its curviness through the Feather River Canyon. That closure has complicated the I-80 traffic.

    This is what happens when there is a winter storm coming in to the sierras in CA. People either won't be able to go there, or they will be stuck coming back down the BIG mountain. For those who may not know, the Pass is 72+ hundred feet. It's treacherous weather and can hit at ANY time.

    Seeing all of those trucks stuck and they are all running single chains. Once the wheel slips one revolution the inside wheel is left spinning on ice while the chained up tire on the outside is spinning in the air an inch from the road.
    Truckers don't be lazy with an easy to install set of chains that only get you into trouble deeper. If it's worth chaining up put on a set of triples. Singles should be banned from drive axle applications and only be allowed on trailer or steering axles. I can't believe this is still happening!

    • @charlesb4267
      @charlesb4267 Рік тому +1

      It's extremely rare to hear a knowledgeable comment like yours ( I am from Alberta ) as it seems most often when I happen to watch videos like this, be it trucks going over I 70 in Colorado or here on Donner etc, that seems to be the theme of using singles and they consider themselves all chained up drive tire wise when they throw singles on the outer four drive corners. If conditions are not too awful that probably gets a fair amount of the trucks through ok that have a proper balance of weight on the drives. I suspect various factors in this single chain theme, companies that buy the bare minimum tire chains for company drivers, not enough placement on the truck to hang two sets of triples plus another two sets of singles for the steers and drag chains on the trailer. Weight being yet another factor, I get the impression some companies don't want any more dead weight on the truck than they are forced to carry. The drive tires on those trucks, probably not ideal winter tires, I would be surprised if fleet companies in general order their trucks with four way lockers. I have only presumed that chaining the outside drive tires is considered sufficient to cover the chain law requirement ( not logic based on condition requirements, just to satisfy DOT I suspect ). That certainly doesn't happen up here in the oil patch or log hauling etc as per off road chaining practices as 8mm trygg triples ( they have the round knobs on the cross chains ) are standard fare and while tandem body jobs can usually get away with one set of triples, highway tractors need two sets and still spin out on the more insane hills. I laughed at the cattle pot that went roaring by these spun out trucks, hmmm, any chance he had on two sets of triples ( plus good weight distribution ) as he wasn't having issues and there would be a reason for that. Packed snow or mud are two surfaces that have trucks fall flat on their face trying to run singles with that bare tire beside holding the truck up after the chained tire spits out the surface it clawed away.

      @74willy81 Рік тому +2

      @@charlesb4267 You bring up some very valid points for the use of singles vs triples, I can see that you've obviously been up and down the road a time or two as well.
      I'm from BC and have been trucking in the Pacific Northwest for over 40 years, long haul highway first then regional mixed with a lot mining and logging road time. Retired now.
      I believe for the sake of safety and the ability to keep major highways open that the use of singles should banned from use on drive axle applications on major arterial routes and interstates.
      Also now that with the trend to "just in time inventory" our highways have become our nations warehouses it saddens me to see the quality of skilled drivers out there declining to the point that many now are essentially just steering wheel holders. This doesn't help much, have seen all too many instances of drivers not having a clue on how to put on a set of chains. Never mind when to chain up.
      Rant off. LOL
      Yeah, LOVE those Trygg chains!
      Have a good one!!!

      @@74willy81 Sad to say but I have a fraction of the experience you possess in the trucking industry, my experience commercially related dates back well over 30 years ago when I worked for a short time for Schlumberger doing frac and cementing jobs, went up the Chinchaga forestry road a certain amount that winter and then way off into the middle of nowhere on cutlines over the muskeg ( winter time of course ), was up in the Pink Mountain area once. Years back did ride with a couple of friends who drove log truck hauling from south of Grande Prairie and tried my hand at slinging load cables ( I needed more practice ! ) . I grew up on a farm and that is how I try to make my living, we have a few highway tractors to haul grain to the local grain terminals and always have a set of triple tryggs hanging on the truck just in case but only throw them on if I find myself in a situation as otherwise simply stop hauling if its that bad as at least we have that choice. I expect your right, there would be a fair percentage of trucks going over passes like that in the states that are over their head with the conditions and putting on insufficient chains and end up getting themselves into a major mess and grind everything to a halt for those that know what they are in for and have the jewellery and know how to use them. We used to get grain custom hauled more back when we didn't have a semi and one of those times the outfit we happened to hire is having traction issues in the yard due to ice, had a melt and refreeze and was flat ground but with no surprise he started having major traction issues as he got into his second trailer of his Super B and I asked if he should probably throw a chain to give him the little bit of help his truck needed. Turns out he had no tire chains and why, oh its because they take up payload so hes not going to carry any chains around. Every so often we would get a super trucker like that, I didn't have chains to fit his truck so I assisted with a tow rope and a small farm tractor I had with tire chains for plowing snow as it didn't take much ( our large four wheel drives have summer fuel and sit in the shed all winter ). I hate to think what a set of Tryggs cost these days. Thanks for the kind reply, oh and I bet your blood pressure starts to rise as you watch a video like this knowing the Donner pass parking lot situation is completely preventable.

      LOL, do you think they will pay any attention to us Canadians, they have had years to take notes but most don't, not from the southern states anyway. What blows me away is that a state like Minnesota that most certainly has winter roads and in fact gets a lot of horrible ice road conditions due to their weather patterns, the law in that state prohibits them from using tires that are studded and in fact have laws against running tire chains as well other than certain situations. Here in Alberta its legal to run studs 365 days a year if one wanted to and just assumed of course all the northern states would allow winter time use of studs.
