Been on an "ideal" veggie diet for over a year. Started eating chicken again finally or small amount of beef once a month and when I do I wake up stronger bigger faster as well as smarter. 🤷♂️
@@faithduperron5905 Oh just make sure you drop in some creatine as a supplement and check if you ingest enough choline.... aan turns out the diet wasn't "ideal" at all. Also I did a DNA test and found my RDA for Vitamine A is 4 times higher and my Selenium is 3 times higher due to bad absorption from genetic disposition. So it might just be that you might have impaired creation of some of the BCAA's or creatine... and the meat adds that bit that you are missing. No need to take all the carcinogens with it. As soon as you know you can adjust to the cause and be fine.
I had pancolitis for 10 years. 2.5 years ago I became a vegan, and my symptoms and disease gradually got better. I am now symptom free. I do not believe this is an auto immune chronic disease, I do believe it is a lifestyle disease. Oh I am also medicine free!
Same here with IBD Crohn’s , life is largely good. One definite is that it’s a 1000 times better since grabbing the vegan/WFPB concept of eating for health

Excellent information, thank you. I have been plant based for over 50 years, I have never even thought about protein adequacy, I have never had any health issues and have excellent muscle strength for my age.
When I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis years ago, there was no information like this available. In fact, I had the EXACT same conversation with my doctor when I asked what I should be eating. He said it didn't matter. Of course it does. Over the years I've tried lots of diets but always believed in my heart that plant-based was best. The information that Dr. Desmond provided here has me 100% convinced. Thanks for posting such a great conversation - it was absolutely packed with all the information I've been looking for.
That's insanity for a doctor to say it doesn't matter. I've had doctors tell me, "Oh just worry about calories". Okay so it doesn't matter if it says "natural flavors" then? lol That could be all kinds of chemicals and toxins giving me health issues to begin with!

This is the Holy Grail of health and nutrition. Makes complete common sense. Science to prove. Been following a wfpb vegan dietary plan and stumbled in to this aspect. I feel liberated. I will never have to “diet” again and will be safeguarding my health for the rest of my life. As an “ethical” vegan who doesn’t want to contribute to horrific animal suffering helps with adherence. No discussion of consuming meat/fish/eggs/dairy matters. I get everything I need. (I do take a multivitamin with B12). Note: when we take a sick pet to the vet, the first question is “what are you feeding?” They know an animal responds first to diet. Doctors ask which pharmacy to call in the prescription.

Concerning the carnivore and keto movements: The whole keto diversion should have been settled when it was found out that Inuits worldwide developed a genetic mutation that prevents ketosis. If you don't think that that fact settles the question: think about it until you do -- because it does.
I've seen a comment saying that it would be more difficult to get the 30 plants into a diet due to where they live making it difficult. I would implore people to start wild foraging and getting to know edible plants that are growing all around us like dandelions and nettles. Obviously its area specific but plants that are on your doorstep are extremely healthy, cost nothing in money and are easy to find.
30 in a week is really pretty easy. I rarely have less than 10 plants in my breakfast oatmeal. I think we overthink this and self-sabotage. Things like soups and chilis and pastas and pizzas and stir fries are all great vehicles for getting wide variety into our weekly diet

I started reducing my refined grains about a year ago, and the easiest thing I knew to pick up was more meat. I lost some stomach fat and was feeling pretty healthy. Then I started learning about the microbiome and really understood how I needed to up my vegetable intake. I lost more stomach fat and was still making gains in the gym. One of the biggest differences I noticed is how long I can go between meals now - it is insane - an 18 hour fast is fine. I'm by no means a vegan, but I would say I am becoming whole food plant focused.
My friend gave me a box of Ezekiel 4:9 sprouted flax cereal, it's all spsprouted grains, half cup is 8grams protein, 7grams fiber, hope it's healthy , cool it's flour free, I feel yah on your comment
This is me! I prioritize plants I think we all should. I still eat high quality protein tho. Cutting refined grains and most processed foods. Still working towards it , but it’s working

Funnily enough I asked the doctor the exactly the same question while in hospital after passing out and being rushed in due to blood loss from diverticulitis. He looked at see as if I had asked an odd question, and told me to “lay off the seeds” I felt a bit awkward and asked no more!
This doctor is advocating what the longest living people in the USA, 7th-Day Adventists, already practice. Whole food, plant based diets like Jack LaLanne and Dr. Scharffenberg espouse and who each lived to 96 and 100 respectively. Scharffenberg is still alive and going strong at 100 by the way.
WOW! So inspiring. Finally someone speaking some sense. The world is slowly making its transition into the plant based diet and within the next few decades it will be fully plant powered. The key to having a healthy digestive tract is simple - eradicate the bad bacteria/parasites, repopulate with good bacteria (probiotics) and keep it up with a colourful plant based diet. 🙏🏼
So what’s for Breakfast I sometimes get a lemon 🍋 from my yard Some baby greens A hand of mixed berries A banana Spirlna and moringa half teaspoon of each all in my Blendtec blender with ice water and drink it two or three times during the day until it’s gone all 48 ounces. I love eggs and bacon and so some of the mornings that’s what I eat. 1 steamed or poached egg 1 strip of bacon. Later on make a blender drink. They do change some with what’s in stock. I do use blue algae organic blue Algae and Organic Moraga I am discovering I don’t do good with flowered products, so I’m using Ezekiel bread it’s flourless and it works fine
I really would like to hear more about the high sugar consumption (maltodextrin etc.) of athletes and the health consequences... and maybe some better recommendations
I wish he would have discussed actual research on plant-based diets for IBD (e.g., Crohns, UC, gastritis, etc.) instead of generalizing. Knowing those specifics on what is up-and-coming in dietary care would be informative and helpful.
Hospitals, doctors offices and schools should be places where good nutrition is taught and provided not places that contribute to disease and obesity. It is crazy the hospitals are feeding people the very food that caused the heart disease, high blood pressure or cancer that they are treating. Every person in the hospital should receive some nutrition education before being released. Every doctor visit should be an opportunity to educate patients about how food choices impacts their health outcomes. The fact that doctors do not get nutrition training as part of their training makes no sense. Medicare and Medicaid should require nutrition education as part of patient care. Focus should be on food choices. Fasting should be investigated as a treatment for disease.
As a nurse who works in a cardiovascular icu, I’m disgusted what we feed people. The “cardiac diet” or “diabetic diet” is unhealthy & trash. They need more vegetables. The way pts eat as well is terrible! So many want to just eat junk or processed meats. Rarely is there any teaching on diet & doctors don’t do a good job with it. I try my best in the short time I have to influence & teach.
AMA will never investigate fasting because they did their best to muzzle America's top proponent of fasting, Herbert M. Shelton (conducted more than 40,000 fasts, wrote 40+ books and edited his Hygienic Review magazines for about 41 years), instead of learning from him.
I wholeheartedly agree. Look at the food that’s being served in almost all school cafeterias and major hospitals and it will make your head spin. Most of the food items on the menu are what directly contributed to you being sick and admitted into the hospital in the first place. Listening to people like Dr. Desmond and treating “food as medicine” is a great place to start on your journey to good health.

Fasting is the way to allow your body's healing mechanism to reverse whatever needed reversing. People have regained their sight while fasting and kept it by eating a naturally grown plant based whole diet. You can check out Herbert M. Shelton's Superior Nutrition and his books on fasting.
I'm literally sitting here in massive tears tonight. I went to a Gastro TODAY for severe abdominal distention, pain and bloating and was COMPLETELY blown off. I have what feels like a large lump in my stomach/intestine, pain in the upper right quadrant and marked bloating. I'm a VERY FIT 61 year old. I told her you couldn't feel the lumps when laying down and yet she told me to lay down and pushed on my stomach. She set me up for a Gastric emptying test in late OCTOBER. I can't do this until then. Gut health is so important and I'm crushed tonight. Absolutely crushed.
ER is trash too. Dealt with this same situation in someone very close to me, could feel a hardness in the abdomen but not when laying down, all doctors examine while laying etc. Went to the ER twice over the course of the last year when pain got unbearable. ER did some bloodwork, no imaging and was just misdiagnosed and discharged, with something multiple doctors had already ruled out as a cause with the instruction to follow up with primary care. Absolutely unhelpful, very expensive health insurance deductibles, 12 hrs of waiting. Really just need to take charge of your own health, do your own research, find people in your community that do not have a medical degree but have experience and knowledge and know what they're doing and how to help.
I learned about chayote as “apple” from 2 Krazy Ketos and it is wonderful. I think Kim Howerton has a recipe also for apple pie?? In the book she did with Neisha. It is wonderful.
Glad you also covered all the conflict😊messaging out there … food becomes demonised … plant base is The food related to stufff from our de pleated earth … I’d also suggest each grower offer one crop out of three to enrich soil
I would like to watch a debate / discussion between this Gastroenterologist and Dr Peter Osbourne functional medicine doctor. They would agree on much however some data / research they disagree on . I know what I choose but how about people with zero biology / medical understanding ?
Wonderful episode, thank you!! Im curious if anyone can speak to the prevalence of b12 deficiency amongst vegans. Is there anything I can tell my patients besides "take a supplement"?
I had a deficiency 45 years ago (I have been plant based for over 50 years). I initially had injections for a few weeks and thereafter take a b12 supplement once a week with good effect and I never experienced a low reading again. I believe there is b12 in nutritional yeast and also fortified plant milks.
@@karadevereux1049thanks for the reply. That's just the thing - the milks must be fortified and I've read the same about nutritional yeast. B12 supps are helpful and if that's the answer so be it, I'm just hopeful to hear that there is a source of this in plants. Maybe the answer is food fermentation.
Since becoming vegan I’m no longer chronically constipated. I’ve cut out processed foods and eat wholesome real food such as healthy fats, fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds, fermented vegetables as well as supplements. Brazil nuts are great source of selenium and zinc and walnuts have omega 3 which is good for brain health..

During the discussion about paleo verses whole food plant based and where we get protein. There was talk on the plant protein is believed by followers of a paleo diet has less bioavailability and amino acids. I use to be an omnivore but always chose eating my plants first and less animals. I also consumed collagen. I have been vegan for two years. The animals I use to eat … ate plants to get all other the nutrients even amino acids so why would humans not get aminos from plants? Doesn’t make sense to me. I have been consuming Energybits Chlorella algae for four months plus my plant based nutrition. Algae has more amino acids than collagen and animal flesh.
I just listened to this podcast and overall I think it provided some good recommendations for eating healthy. However, it seems that Dr. Desmond equated eating meat with eating the American Standard Diet (i.e., highly processed foods). That is certainly not always the case. I eat meat but definitely stay away, as much as I can, from highly processed foods. I do not eat the American Standard Diet just because I consume meat.
Actually 33 or 34 years since the back- to -sleep campaign because I was pregnant with my eldest son at the time it started & he is 33 years old now. I can be mistaken as my youngest child is 31 now so definitely not 25 years ago.
I wonder if letting babies sleep on their backs is helpful only for babies whose mothers have a certain diet (dairy), and doesn't make a difference in cultures with different diets. I was told by an African woman that this sudden death syndrome is not a problem in non dairy African cultures. It would have something to do with the cow casomorphin being too relaxing for a human baby. I don't know, it's just a theory I've heard.
to take that assumption, you have to be aware that there is no studies to back that. Also a lot of African countries ( bearing in mind that Africa has over 54 different countries) have adopted a lot of WESTERN DIETS and have large numbers using supplemental formulas for feeding to their children( alternative to breast milk) . I say this with all respect. Studies are needed
There are actually quite a few studies now that I look into it. Google this one and there will be links to more: "Relation of beta-casomorphin to apnea in sudden infant death syndrome" The woman I spoke to was from Liberia, but milk drinking is nos not a traditional thing anywhere in Africa, except among some nomadic herding peoples.
Even children today have signs of artery disease. Fast foods and sugary drinks have long term consequences. There is an obesity epidemic today where over 60% of the population is overweight or obese. What is common today and "NORMAL" is not healthy. The average person today is not healthy and is taking medications. Heart attacks were once only common in people over 65. Today people in their 40 are having heart attacks. Add more plants and vegetables to your diet and less junk and overly processed foods
These are wonderful perspectives; I was so optimistic about my investments this year, but everything has gone wrong. I've been researching market crashes and noticed that several investors made millions during the prior recession, and I was wondering if such success could be replicated in the current market. I consider myself quite fortunate. In my early 30s, I began investing and compounding my income to generate greater cash flow. I chose a more aggressive approach, and I've already generated over $250k in raw profits from only the first quarter of 2023, primarily from blue chip stocks, precious metals, real estate, and high yield dividend funds. I believe the reason people eat crap is they don’t know what to concoct out of vegetable ingredients in a tasteful non-bland way. And this requires too much mental effort and planning for busy people. I wish entrepreneurs could help out by starting to copy what Bryan Johnson is doing and offer up easy meals you can ship to us or recipes you can share! Maybe partner with Factor or hello fresh and add more variety and organic options!!
I'm plant based, I just also eat eggs, fish, meat, cheese and yoghurt in moderation. Feel great, look great (for my age), and I'm ill maybe once a year with a cold or stomach bug.
30 plants per week cant be natural, i live in italy and in season we can hardly get 30 different kinds of edible plants suitable for human consumptions. may be in summer time. including many fruits, i prefer keeping my plants seasonal. and i really want to believe that. plants dont want to kills us :)
I always interpreted that as all vegetation ~ like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes and grains. However, I don't do that. The Okinawians didn't eat 30 plants per week and they didn't do too bad 😉
5 to 10 herbs and spices 10 verggies, fruits and berries 2 - 4 beans and lentils 2 - 4 grains and pseudo-grains 2 - 4 nuts and seeds 1 - 2 Legumes 1 or 2 fermented foods (or more of you can do it yourself) Mushrooms But it does not have to be 30 every week. In some blue-zones they have like 10 to 15 things they eat. Dr. Greger recommends the daily Dozen. The main goal is a whole food plant based vegan diet.
All diets are bad when doing them as a long term choice …the best thing is to stop process food and eat balance fuit veg and meat. People notice changes with this diets beciaee the stop process food which makes huge difference. We need a variety of natural foods. Things go wrong in the long term by sticking to one diet for the rest of your life.
44:24 that’s storytelling, not science. Lowfat dairy is associated with good health outcomes, especially when fermented. This is my problem with all the diet “camps” - so much storytelling tends to creep in.
Plant chompers youtube channel has 3 videos on health influencers. The 4 that he hand picked that 1) lived the longest, 2) and in the best health, 3) and with awards and honors, 4) and with faultless exemplary track records in life, 5) and perfect wikipedia pages with no controversial claims, 6) and who helped save millions of lives for humanity, Dr. Kummerow, Dr. Hinohara, Dr. Denmark and Dr. Zheng Ji, all 4 ate a small to moderate amount of animal foods 2 or 3 times every day, along with a balanced diet in moderation with no junk food and all 4 kept super fit. All 4 said the best protein is from animal foods. These 2 men speaking to each other do not have the 6 attributes listed.
At 57:00 we have a we have citation of terrible studies that failed to isolate variables... his analogy to cholera clustering around a water pump and colon cancer clustering around meat consumption is absolute rubbish. The studies he cites never isolated the variables. Did he forgot that we now produce millions of metric tons of seed oils and processed garbage? It just so happens that we have a unhealthy user bias because we have a groupthink around "meat is bad"... the emperor has no clothes. Alan Desmond is smart but misses the boat on the value of meat in a well constructed diet and lifestyle.
There is nothing in meat that you can't find in plants. Animals get their protein from plants, and meat-eaters get their protein second hand. Our DNA is 98% the same as gorillas. We're plant-eaters, pure and simple.
@@breadanwine A Gorilla lives to about age 40, has a total cholesterol level of about 245 mg/dL, has to spend 16 hours all day eating and still has to sometimes eat it's own poop to get extra nutrients from it's own low nutrient diet, it can't throw a ball anywhere near as fast as a human who weighs 3 times less. It has a stomach pH of 6 where a human is 1.5. It has tooth decay by age 30 from too much raw plant food. Is this what you do?
Some talk about fibre as if it irritates the walls of the gut which speeds up transit as your body wants that stuff out. Some say that fibre is not a nutrient and that the main useful product of it’s fermentation in the gut are converted by the body into ketones which the body also makes in a ketogenic diet. Some point to the many many people finding relief from IBS and Crohn’s disease with a very low carb diet. Some even point to the only existing study on the effect of removing all fibre from the diet which resolved all constipation in the subjects of the study. Absolutely ridiculous. We should not pay any attention to them regardless of the evidence.
@@davidr1431 95% of American adults and children do not consume recommended amounts of fiber. According to the fossil record our ancestors our consumed 100-300g of fiber daily. The teeth of these ancestors was comprised of residues that showed they consumed copious amounts of plant roughage as well. IBS is largely the result of processed food,, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, household chemicals, toxic cosmetic products, and excess fat from processed oils......not fiber. Many plants don’t want to be eaten and contain natural poisons, but a healthy body can deal with these poisons. Do the benefits of eating these plants outweigh the negatives, I wonder…
Not every meat comes with preservatives as bacon. Eating too much meat is not healthy, but to get enough protein from plants you must eat a giant pile of plants to meet the minimum. If you eat GMO soy it's not healthier than bacon...
Having few body builders as an example is not enough to prove anything. It's scientifically proven that plant based protein is less bioavailable than animal source. Majority of body builders eat animal protein, but only vegan/vegetarian are vocal about their diet.

The attacks on meat do remind of the tobacco industry playbook, too. It is important to mind the effects of Glyphosate/etc. accumulation in animal (saturated) fat as well as the role of A1 Casein and trans fats. Rethinking the role of saturated fat may be crucial in this context. Empty calories yes, but more than that? I mean trans fats probably caused dozens of millions of people to die 10 years early, the science seems clear enough on that. A1 Casein I'm not sure we have good studies on chronic low dose use of heroin, but it IS something like heroin. And didn't the Seven Countries Study have a "weird anomaly" concerning France and their high butter/milk product consumption not being so bad? Well they got no A1 Casein in their milk. Although 30 different plants a week does sound like a good idea. But I believe that you can make space for that while enjoying a meat rich diet. Heme iron sounds like a concern, sure. But do the experiments before throwing out differing views. Reminder how much money hangs in the balance when it comes to demonizing saturated fat. When it comes to Holstein (A1 Casein) cow milk. When it comes to Glyphosate. Who are the people you lean on when criticizing meat? Everyone got their agenda and sometimes things converge in a way that's not so beneficial to society at large. At least that's how I look at this situation. Not saying saturated fat is great but do mind the science that went into demonizing it. Compare to the studies concerning saturated fat from palm trees. Of course you'll see junk animal products cause a clustering of disease. But there's plenty money on the line when it comes to turning a blind eye as to why they're junk.
2020 Journal of American College of Cardiology paper said meta-analysis showed no beneficial health effect of reducing dietary saturated fat on CVD or mortality.

The reduction in combined cardiovascular events resulting from reducing saturated fat did not alter by study duration, sex or baseline level of cardiovascular risk, but greater reduction in saturated fat caused greater reductions in cardiovascular events." Hooper et al, 2020, Reduction in saturated fat intake for cardiovascular disease This Cochrane review is the gold standard of meta reviews on this subject matter and it shows correlation with reducing sat fat leading to reduced cardiovascular disease. Please site your source better so we can check that study for comparison.
Sorry but your epidemiology studies are not complete. Cows eat plants, they ferment in one of their stomachs and we get the benefit of that fermentation. Which is amazing for gut health. If you believe what you’re saying it becomes true for you! But you’re wrong. Followers please read The Big Surprise, then you will see what epidemiology studies he’s referring to.
I think you don't really know how a complete change of diet will affect you till you have followed it for years or at least a year. People might feel great going fully plant based at first but then years down the line it may have negatively impacted their hormones, muscle mass etc.
Well...I'm 85, been plant-based 20 years. My arthritis disappeared completely within a couple of months. During lockdown, I began running, wanting to come out of it with a new skill. I then discovered ultra marathons, and I've done 11 of these so far. I have a goal of reaching 100 ultras before my 100th birthday. I know nothing about hormones, but certainly my muscle mass is absolutely fine, thanks.We're herbivores pure and simple.
My husband and I just had our 8 year anniversary Whole Food plant based. Feel amazing. 65 and no health issues and no meds. Do it for your health,💪 compassion for all animals🐄 and the planet 🌎
The blue zones where people often live past 100 years old are all predominantly plant based. No one is going to the ER due to low protein. Everything that’s alive has protein. But almost no one is getting enough fiber.
Too biased towards plant-based nutrients. 7 grams of meat protein a day is the recommended amount? That's tiny! OK, if you want to persuade me to change my protein source from meat to plants, explain why. You've cited studies and stats showing a lower incidence of coronary diseases etc, but are these controlled? Could there not be other factors causing the disease? What is it exactly about meat protein that is worse than plant?
Dont expect any interview to cover everything you need to know to make up your mind; that's impossible. It would be a 4-day long interview. The aim of interviews like this one is to make you curious to learn more about a topic. It's a journey. It's interesting also to note that research about smoking, trans fats, and viruses are well accepted, but when it comes to food, all of a sudden, the same methodology is no longer sufficient. Anyways, good luck.
Read some books. Look at the study he mentioned from the lancet. Watch “game changers” documentary or forks over knives or read “blue zones”. Just read. Unless you just want to cling to your meat.

Also I did a DNA test and found my RDA for Vitamine A is 4 times higher and my Selenium is 3 times higher due to bad absorption from genetic disposition. So it might just be that you might have impaired creation of some of the BCAA's or creatine... and the meat adds that bit that you are missing.
No need to take all the carcinogens with it. As soon as you know you can adjust to the cause and be fine.

I had pancolitis for 10 years. 2.5 years ago I became a vegan, and my symptoms and disease gradually got better. I am now symptom free. I do not believe this is an auto immune chronic disease, I do believe it is a lifestyle disease. Oh I am also medicine free!

When I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis years ago, there was no information like this available. In fact, I had the EXACT same conversation with my doctor when I asked what I should be eating. He said it didn't matter. Of course it does. Over the years I've tried lots of diets but always believed in my heart that plant-based was best. The information that Dr. Desmond provided here has me 100% convinced. Thanks for posting such a great conversation - it was absolutely packed with all the information I've been looking for.
That's insanity for a doctor to say it doesn't matter. I've had doctors tell me, "Oh just worry about calories". Okay so it doesn't matter if it says "natural flavors" then? lol That could be all kinds of chemicals and toxins giving me health issues to begin with!

This is the Holy Grail of health and nutrition. Makes complete common sense. Science to prove. Been following a wfpb vegan dietary plan and stumbled in to this aspect. I feel liberated. I will never have to “diet” again and will be safeguarding my health for the rest of my life.
As an “ethical” vegan who doesn’t want to contribute to horrific animal suffering helps with adherence. No discussion of consuming meat/fish/eggs/dairy matters. I get everything I need. (I do take a multivitamin with B12).
Note: when we take a sick pet to the vet, the first question is “what are you feeding?” They know an animal responds first to diet. Doctors ask which pharmacy to call in the prescription.

I've seen a comment saying that it would be more difficult to get the 30 plants into a diet due to where they live making it difficult. I would implore people to start wild foraging and getting to know edible plants that are growing all around us like dandelions and nettles. Obviously its area specific but plants that are on your doorstep are extremely healthy, cost nothing in money and are easy to find.

30 in a week is really pretty easy. I rarely have less than 10 plants in my breakfast oatmeal. I think we overthink this and self-sabotage. Things like soups and chilis and pastas and pizzas and stir fries are all great vehicles for getting wide variety into our weekly diet

I started reducing my refined grains about a year ago, and the easiest thing I knew to pick up was more meat. I lost some stomach fat and was feeling pretty healthy. Then I started learning about the microbiome and really understood how I needed to up my vegetable intake. I lost more stomach fat and was still making gains in the gym. One of the biggest differences I noticed is how long I can go between meals now - it is insane - an 18 hour fast is fine. I'm by no means a vegan, but I would say I am becoming whole food plant focused.
My friend gave me a box of Ezekiel 4:9 sprouted flax cereal, it's all spsprouted grains, half cup is 8grams protein, 7grams fiber, hope it's healthy , cool it's flour free, I feel yah on your comment

This doctor is advocating what the longest living people in the USA, 7th-Day Adventists, already practice. Whole food, plant based diets like Jack LaLanne and Dr. Scharffenberg espouse and who each lived to 96 and 100 respectively. Scharffenberg is still alive and going strong at 100 by the way.
WOW! So inspiring. Finally someone speaking some sense. The world is slowly making its transition into the plant based diet and within the next few decades it will be fully plant powered. The key to having a healthy digestive tract is simple - eradicate the bad bacteria/parasites, repopulate with good bacteria (probiotics) and keep it up with a colourful plant based diet. 🙏🏼

I love eggs and bacon and so some of the mornings that’s what I eat. 1 steamed or poached egg 1 strip of bacon. Later on make a blender drink. They do change some with what’s in stock. I do use blue algae organic blue Algae and Organic Moraga
I am discovering I don’t do good with flowered products, so I’m using Ezekiel bread it’s flourless and it works fine

I wish he would have discussed actual research on plant-based diets for IBD (e.g., Crohns, UC, gastritis, etc.) instead of generalizing. Knowing those specifics on what is up-and-coming in dietary care would be informative and helpful.

Hospitals, doctors offices and schools should be places where good nutrition is taught and provided not places that contribute to disease and obesity. It is crazy the hospitals are feeding people the very food that caused the heart disease, high blood pressure or cancer that they are treating. Every person in the hospital should receive some nutrition education before being released. Every doctor visit should be an opportunity to educate patients about how food choices impacts their health outcomes. The fact that doctors do not get nutrition training as part of their training makes no sense. Medicare and Medicaid should require nutrition education as part of patient care. Focus should be on food choices. Fasting should be investigated as a treatment for disease.
I volunteer at a hospital. The cafeteria stench of deep fried everything makes me 🤢 I watch what our “medical experts” eat. Such a pity.
As a nurse who works in a cardiovascular icu, I’m disgusted what we feed people. The “cardiac diet” or “diabetic diet” is unhealthy & trash. They need more vegetables. The way pts eat as well is terrible! So many want to just eat junk or processed meats. Rarely is there any teaching on diet & doctors don’t do a good job with it. I try my best in the short time I have to influence & teach.

AMA will never investigate fasting because they did their best to muzzle America's top proponent of fasting, Herbert M. Shelton (conducted more than 40,000 fasts, wrote 40+ books and edited his Hygienic Review magazines for about 41 years), instead of learning from him.
I wholeheartedly agree. Look at the food that’s being served in almost all school cafeterias and major hospitals and it will make your head spin. Most of the food items on the menu are what directly contributed to you being sick and admitted into the hospital in the first place. Listening to people like Dr. Desmond and treating “food as medicine” is a great place to start on your journey to good health.

Fasting is the way to allow your body's healing mechanism to reverse whatever needed reversing. People have regained their sight while fasting and kept it by eating a naturally grown plant based whole diet. You can check out Herbert M. Shelton's Superior Nutrition and his books on fasting.
I'm literally sitting here in massive tears tonight. I went to a Gastro TODAY for severe abdominal distention, pain and bloating and was COMPLETELY blown off. I have what feels like a large lump in my stomach/intestine, pain in the upper right quadrant and marked bloating. I'm a VERY FIT 61 year old. I told her you couldn't feel the lumps when laying down and yet she told me to lay down and pushed on my stomach. She set me up for a Gastric emptying test in late OCTOBER. I can't do this until then. Gut health is so important and I'm crushed tonight. Absolutely crushed.

Go to the ER…they can’t blow you off. Could also be ovarian. Get a different gastro doc!
ER is trash too. Dealt with this same situation in someone very close to me, could feel a hardness in the abdomen but not when laying down, all doctors examine while laying etc. Went to the ER twice over the course of the last year when pain got unbearable. ER did some bloodwork, no imaging and was just misdiagnosed and discharged, with something multiple doctors had already ruled out as a cause with the instruction to follow up with primary care. Absolutely unhelpful, very expensive health insurance deductibles, 12 hrs of waiting. Really just need to take charge of your own health, do your own research, find people in your community that do not have a medical degree but have experience and knowledge and know what they're doing and how to help.

Im curious if anyone can speak to the prevalence of b12 deficiency amongst vegans. Is there anything I can tell my patients besides "take a supplement"?
I think fermented veggies help with this, the probiotic bacteria produce a bunch of 'b' vitamins. Even yogurt with active cultures helps with this.
I had a deficiency 45 years ago (I have been plant based for over 50 years). I initially had injections for a few weeks and thereafter take a b12 supplement once a week with good effect and I never experienced a low reading again. I believe there is b12 in nutritional yeast and also fortified plant milks.

B12 supps are helpful and if that's the answer so be it, I'm just hopeful to hear that there is a source of this in plants. Maybe the answer is food fermentation.
Fermented food and seamoss or kelp and cut back on carbs. Most eat too much soy which socks minerals from the body and too many carbs
Since becoming vegan I’m no longer chronically constipated. I’ve cut out processed foods and eat wholesome real food such as healthy fats, fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds, fermented vegetables as well as supplements. Brazil nuts are great source of selenium and zinc and walnuts have omega 3 which is good for brain health..

During the discussion about paleo verses whole food plant based and where we get protein. There was talk on the plant protein is believed by followers of a paleo diet has less bioavailability and amino acids. I use to be an omnivore but always chose eating my plants first and less animals. I also consumed collagen. I have been vegan for two years. The animals I use to eat … ate plants to get all other the nutrients even amino acids so why would humans not get aminos from plants? Doesn’t make sense to me. I have been consuming Energybits Chlorella algae for four months plus my plant based nutrition. Algae has more amino acids than collagen and animal flesh.

I just listened to this podcast and overall I think it provided some good recommendations for eating healthy. However, it seems that Dr. Desmond equated eating meat with eating the American Standard Diet (i.e., highly processed foods). That is certainly not always the case. I eat meat but definitely stay away, as much as I can, from highly processed foods. I do not eat the American Standard Diet just because I consume meat.
Actually 33 or 34 years since the back- to -sleep campaign because I was pregnant with my eldest son at the time it started & he is 33 years old now. I can be mistaken as my youngest child is 31 now so definitely not 25 years ago.

I wonder if letting babies sleep on their backs is helpful only for babies whose mothers have a certain diet (dairy), and doesn't make a difference in cultures with different diets. I was told by an African woman that this sudden death syndrome is not a problem in non dairy African cultures. It would have something to do with the cow casomorphin being too relaxing for a human baby. I don't know, it's just a theory I've heard.
to take that assumption, you have to be aware that there is no studies to back that. Also a lot of African countries ( bearing in mind that Africa has over 54 different countries) have adopted a lot of WESTERN DIETS and have large numbers using supplemental formulas for feeding to their children( alternative to breast milk) . I say this with all respect.

And this requires too much mental effort and planning for busy people. Maybe partner with Factor or hello fresh and add more variety and organic options!!

1 - 2 Legumes
1 or 2 fermented foods (or more of you can do it yourself)

But it does not have to be 30 every week. In some blue-zones they have like 10 to 15 things they eat.

All diets are bad when doing them as a long term choice …the best thing is to stop process food and eat balance fuit veg and meat. People notice changes with this diets beciaee the stop process food which makes huge difference. We need a variety of natural foods. Things go wrong in the long term by sticking to one diet for the rest of your life.

All 4 said the best protein is from animal foods. These 2 men speaking to each other do not have the 6 attributes listed.

Having few body builders as an example is not enough to prove anything. It's scientifically proven that plant based protein is less bioavailable than animal source. Majority of body builders eat animal protein, but only vegan/vegetarian are vocal about their diet.

The attacks on meat do remind of the tobacco industry playbook, too. It is important to mind the effects of Glyphosate/etc. accumulation in animal (saturated) fat as well as the role of A1 Casein and trans fats. Rethinking the role of saturated fat may be crucial in this context. Empty calories yes, but more than that? I mean trans fats probably caused dozens of millions of people to die 10 years early, the science seems clear enough on that. A1 Casein I'm not sure we have good studies on chronic low dose use of heroin, but it IS something like heroin. And didn't the Seven Countries Study have a "weird anomaly" concerning France and their high butter/milk product consumption not being so bad? Well they got no A1 Casein in their milk. Although 30 different plants a week does sound like a good idea. But I believe that you can make space for that while enjoying a meat rich diet. Heme iron sounds like a concern, sure. But do the experiments before throwing out differing views.
Reminder how much money hangs in the balance when it comes to demonizing saturated fat. When it comes to Holstein (A1 Casein) cow milk. When it comes to Glyphosate. Who are the people you lean on when criticizing meat? Everyone got their agenda and sometimes things converge in a way that's not so beneficial to society at large. At least that's how I look at this situation. Not saying saturated fat is great but do mind the science that went into demonizing it. Compare to the studies concerning saturated fat from palm trees. Of course you'll see junk animal products cause a clustering of disease. But there's plenty money on the line when it comes to turning a blind eye as to why they're junk.

This Cochrane review is the gold standard of meta reviews on this subject matter and it shows correlation with reducing sat fat leading to reduced cardiovascular disease. Please site your source better so we can check that study for comparison.
Sorry but your epidemiology studies are not complete. Cows eat plants, they ferment in one of their stomachs and we get the benefit of that fermentation. Which is amazing for gut health.

I think you don't really know how a complete change of diet will affect you till you have followed it for years or at least a year. People might feel great going fully plant based at first but then years down the line it may have negatively impacted their hormones, muscle mass etc.
Well...I'm 85, been plant-based 20 years. My arthritis disappeared completely within a couple of months. During lockdown, I began running, wanting to come out of it with a new skill. I then discovered ultra marathons, and I've done 11 of these so far. I have a goal of reaching 100 ultras before my 100th birthday. I know nothing about hormones, but certainly my muscle mass is absolutely fine, thanks.We're herbivores pure and simple.
Longest lived population are mainly plant based. They live active healthy live well into their 90s. Data contradict you here...

The blue zones where people often live past 100 years old are all predominantly plant based. No one is going to the ER due to low protein. Everything that’s alive has protein. But almost no one is getting enough fiber.

OK, if you want to persuade me to change my protein source from meat to plants, explain why. You've cited studies and stats showing a lower incidence of coronary diseases etc, but are these controlled? Could there not be other factors causing the disease? What is it exactly about meat protein that is worse than plant?
Dont expect any interview to cover everything you need to know to make up your mind; that's impossible. It would be a 4-day long interview. The aim of interviews like this one is to make you curious to learn more about a topic. It's a journey. It's interesting also to note that research about smoking, trans fats, and viruses are well accepted, but when it comes to food, all of a sudden, the same methodology is no longer sufficient. Read some books. Look at the study he mentioned from the lancet. Watch “game changers” documentary or forks over knives or read “blue zones”. Just read. Unless you just want to cling to your meat.

What about animals killed and land cleared if we were all vegan.??... he talks about meat preservatives like nitrates not organic meat.
