This is so important and is hardly ever broadcast, doing half of the world's population a total disservice. I'm a 78 year old registered nurse who is still working,; and had very little knowledge about such debilitated conditions. Well done bringing this important issue to our attention.

Loved this episode so much, thank you Rich! What a gem Doctor Gemma is! I'm 40 and haven't reached menopause yet but I've started to think about it more now that I'm officially in my 40's and like to be prepared and have knowledge about it. I'm a vegan and have been for a few years but lately gained a bit weight and this episode has inspired me to eat more healthy vegan food, less mince and more lentils, look into what foods I should reduce and replace and what I should eat more of. Today I made the most delicious soup from a sweet potato, carrots, red lentils, ginger, salt and vegetable broth and it was sooo good and kept me going for hours! (cooked everything in a bit of water until carrots and potato were soft and then mashed it with a hand held blender (don't know the name for it)) And then I listened to this episode which has inspired me to eat more healthy both for my hormones, mental health and weight :)

Google lists these... (I did that because my spelling isn't so great)... Foods made from soybeans can be divided into unfermented and fermented foods. Unfermented foods include - tofu, soymilk, edamame, soy nuts and sprouts, while fermented soy products include - miso, tempeh, natto ....

I LOVE that Gemma brought up the evolutionary biology of menopause, reducing the mortality through childbirth of older years allowing women to have more likelihood of being around for their own children's adulthood and childbearing years. My experience living in East Africa the past 15 years tells me clearly that societies that value elders - or really, value and embrace humans at every stage of life, not wishing to prolong any phase as better or more desirable - are healthier places to be. Thank you!

The 'bandwidth' to change diet is a good concept and visited by other doctors but using different terminology. There's only so much change people can accept right away in general. I think it's part where the concept of atomic habits helps where graphing out change over time it can theoretically be easier to make these changes in small increments although doing it methodically.
It reminds me of one of the plant based people I think Plantiful Kiki might have mentioned replace brown rice instead of white rice and the kids might not like it. I think in that case it is possible that brown could be mixed in with white over time in increments and the children will not be shocked into the switch. It actually would be a wonderful experiment to see how it would work out.

Great conversation! A few clarifications about the statements made in this episode about Endometriosis: Endo is not actually the lining of the uterus that is found outside of the uterus, it's cells SIMILAR to the uterine lining found outside of the uterus. This is a very important distinction. Also, Gemma talks about how ablation (the burning of the Endometriosis lesions) is a way to treat Endometriosis. Excision surgery by an Endometriosis specialist is the gold standard for actual TREATMENT of Endo, NOT ablation. Unfortunately with ablation, typically the endo will grow back and now an individual will have continuous scar tissue building up for the ablation in addition to their growing endo. If you have Endo, I have so much compassion for you. Please also do your research to find an actual Endometriosis specialist who knows the difference between an ablation and an excision surgery.

I don't feel like I'm going to learn anything but I may be surprised. I just like the two of you and want to hear you tell me all the good things I already know about why a plant-based diet is the best diet for people.

Interesting fact, is if you delve into recepe books on different countries, you start making delicious meals and don't even realise your not eating meat, one worth a peak is Otto Lingi, you can basically introduce taste that replaces meats.

I’m a biologist who has had lots of chemistry and biochemistry. In regards to the oil debate such as olive oil or coconut oil, she is more concerned about constituents in oil such as polyphenols when the real problem is the insolubility of the oil, in regards to heart disease. Sure the saturated fat has a bent structure to it and this bent appearance also has something called steric hindrance and these qualities cause more blockage potential… But even the less steric energy has the ability to block by virtue of it’s insolubility, in combination with its inflammation. Does she not realize the inflammation plus thick blood is a toxic mess?

My whole life i suffered through heavy amd so painful period cramps i mean "nausea, fieber, vomiting and sometimes excess bowl movements for the last 24 years of my 37 years) I went plant based since last year October and in the month of march I didn't realise I had my period until I woke up, I normally start to suffer 2 days before my period starts and then had a 7 days period and will suffer until the 7th day..and here I was early morning in march feeling woozy a little bit and right there sitting on the loo I realised I had started my period..and didn't realise it until June that it was due to my being plant based..so yes I am one of those who benefitted in that area❤

It was the perfect place for a post-marathon treat and if you do end up visiting London Rich, Brighton isn’t too far away and well worth a visit 👍
