I noticed that women’s concerns are very downplayed as us bring “over dramatic,” which results in us getting misdiagnosed. Something about Gemma’s tone of voice and how she expresses her concerns/experience makes me feel so safe and understood. Thank you for bringing her 🙌🏻

This is so important and is hardly ever broadcast, doing half of the world's population a total disservice. I'm a 78 year old registered nurse who is still working,; and had very little knowledge about such debilitated conditions. Well done bringing this important issue to our attention.

I LOVE that Gemma brought up the evolutionary biology of menopause, reducing the mortality through childbirth of older years allowing women to have more likelihood of being around for their own children's adulthood and childbearing years. My experience living in East Africa the past 15 years tells me clearly that societies that value elders - or really, value and embrace humans at every stage of life, not wishing to prolong any phase as better or more desirable - are healthier places to be. Thank you!

I was diagnosed with endometriosis over 20 years ago. I self researched how diet could impact my symptoms and implemented a plant based diet (without my dr’s Support). I had surgery and was told it was chronic and would need surgery every 3-5 years. I have managed my symptoms and not had another surgery. I am a huge believer in food affecting health but still have so much to learn and I so appreciate resources like this to keep me steady on the journey. I am in my 50’s and have had no peri menopausal or menopause symptoms yet. This podcast is so informative and helpful! Thank you!

Loved this episode so much, thank you Rich! What a gem Doctor Gemma is! I'm 40 and haven't reached menopause yet but I've started to think about it more now that I'm officially in my 40's and like to be prepared and have knowledge about it. I'm a vegan and have been for a few years but lately gained a bit weight and this episode has inspired me to eat more healthy vegan food, less mince and more lentils, look into what foods I should reduce and replace and what I should eat more of. Today I made the most delicious soup from a sweet potato, carrots, red lentils, ginger, salt and vegetable broth and it was sooo good and kept me going for hours! (cooked everything in a bit of water until carrots and potato were soft and then mashed it with a hand held blender (don't know the name for it)) And then I listened to this episode which has inspired me to eat more healthy both for my hormones, mental health and weight :)

Dr. Greger recommends more soy foods. I tried that and made a huge difference. No dairy products too. Hot flushes went.
Google lists these... (I did that because my spelling isn't so great)... Foods made from soybeans can be divided into unfermented and fermented foods. Unfermented foods include - tofu, soymilk, edamame, soy nuts and sprouts, while fermented soy products include - miso, tempeh, natto ....

HRT IS LIFE CHANGING (for me). Mentally and physically-- so grateful for docs (men and women) who listened to me and work with me. Great conversation! A few clarifications about the statements made in this episode about Endometriosis: Endo is not actually the lining of the uterus that is found outside of the uterus, it's cells SIMILAR to the uterine lining found outside of the uterus. This is a very important distinction. Also, Gemma talks about how ablation (the burning of the Endometriosis lesions) is a way to treat Endometriosis. Excision surgery by an Endometriosis specialist is the gold standard for actual TREATMENT of Endo, NOT ablation. Unfortunately with ablation, typically the endo will grow back and now an individual will have continuous scar tissue building up for the ablation in addition to their growing endo. If you have Endo, I have so much compassion for you. Please also do your research to find an actual Endometriosis specialist who knows the difference between an ablation and an excision surgery.

That was really helpful to say how it would be easier to sustain the habit of plant based diet. I.e because of an outside factor rather than just your own beneficial health. I have experienced trying totally plant based before and it was difficult when eating with family, going out. I'm going to try this again so a massive THANK YOU

I wish more female doctors would tell woman this ahead of time . Mine never told me . I’m suffering now because mine was caused early at 43 due to radiation and chemotherapy . Such a great interview. Love her.

Endometriosis is from the pit of hell. A lot of doctors miss the diagnosis of Interstitial Cystitis along with endo. Some women have hysterectomies and wake up in pain. I had my first laparoscopy and woke up in pain. That doctor wanted to remove all of my organs. I found another doctor who suggested physical therapy and be seen for IC. He refused to do hysterectomies for endo because of his experience of women having bladder pain along with endometriosis. I found out that I have both. The pain used to be unbearable, and I wanted to die. Flare-ups still happen when I eat something that irritates me. I'm working on healing my gut now and figuring out histamine intolerance and insulin resistance. The diet change helped tremendously. I believe healing my gut is key for long-term healing.

Lol I have add and it was quasi easy to switch to whole food plant diet. I even grow some of my own food. Once you see the research its a nobrainer.

I have been keto carnivore with leafy green veg and nuts for the past five years. Never experienced any of the side-effects mentioned. Yes my LDL went up (zero small dense ldl) , but my triglycerides went down and my HDL went up. After two years on this diet my coronary calcium score improved by 38%. My hscrp is usually under 1 . Fasting insulin usually around 5-6 . Triglycerides 1 and hdl 1.8(metric units).Poop regularly, no constipation. Libido good. Must be that we are a species that respond to different diets differently?

I for sure notice that if I’m eating particularly red meat heavy, my periods are also heavy with hefty cramping. But I have my spurts of fully plant based mostly Whole Foods and my periods are so much less. In the amount of blood, the amount of cramping and the amount of general fatigue at the beginning. Overall it is always an easier more seemless period when I’m on the plant wagon :) need to stay on this wagon!

    Dr. Newman is quite lovable.
I believe the study on HRT may have come out even a bit earlier, because around 2000 my doctor was poised to start me on HRT, and then completely changed her mind and mine, because of the new information surrounding it, so I never got it.
I probably missed out on a lot of beneficial effects.

Dear Rich Roll and to your special guest Dr. Gemma Newman ....... I am watching and listening in from start to finish on this very interesting subject. Now please do not get me wrong but to introduce myself I am 68 years of age living in Phuket Thailand enjoying my good weight at 125 pounds standing only 5 foot 3 inches tall with a flat stomach so I have excellent IBM and no diabetes and no chronic pain and inflammation at all and why is this? So in stark contrast more than 35 years ago I was suffering and living with MORBID OBESITY tipping the scales of more than a whopping 300 pounds living in California USA. Losing successfully all of my extremely excess weight followed up by 40 years of independent research has really OPENED UP MY EYES and MY HEART to what the so UGLY TRUTH is in consideration of our western high jacked food supply and all causes of death and disease that really from my extensive research is rearing its UGLY BIG PHARM HEAD working in collusion with our own Governments and Agencies across the board. We do not live with a deficiency of any synthetic patented drug whatsoever and I live drug-free from my research and life
In my honest opinion, a good way to get your life back and I wish that I had this information for my life back then is to follow the longest-living people in the world called the BLUE ZONES in all 5 locations. To learn how to live close to the earth for real health found at this website. www.bluezones.com and go to the Environmental Working Group website for even more information on health and longevity. ua-cam.com/video/5S3UzS5YhcA/v-deo.html
