  • Dr Will Bulsiewicz is an absolute powerhouse when it comes to the science of gut health and the microbiome. He’s also a favourite on The Proof, dating back to his ground-breaking first appearance on Episode #17 of the show.
👇 Visit The Proof website for the full show notes and supporting studies. 👇

Having returned to The Proof multiple times since that initial episode, Dr Bulsiewicz has joined me to explore various topics, including building the foundations of a healthy gut, why people quit plant-based diets, and most recently, how to heal your microbiome after antibiotics. In Episode #275, we shift our focus to how the microbiome affects metabolism.
Known as “Dr B”, Dr Will Bulsiewicz is a renowned gastroenterologist and a leading authority on gut health on the international stage. He is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Fiber Fueled and The Fiber Fueled Cookbook and has been honoured with awards in his field. In addition to serving as the US Medical Director and being a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for ZOE, a personalised nutrition company, Dr Bulsiewicz has contributed to over twenty peer-reviewed scientific journals. He has presented more than forty times at national meetings, presented to Congress and the USDA, and helped educate and guide more than 10,000 students on their journey to achieve optimal gut health.
In today’s conversation, we zoom in on the three ways that the microbiome affects our metabolism: through energy balance, blood glucose control (insulin resistance), and blood lipids.
    Specifically, we cover:

Thanks for your input. I live in Madeira, Portugal.. The general public have no idea how to care for their body.,and not a clue about the microbiom. To listen to Doctor B., ,who I have followed since find ing Zoe , is such a privilege. At 82, and a committed vegetarian for om 16 years of age . Not just a vegetarian but committed to correct eating. He can come and sit in my home at any time. Best love. Valerie.

Brilliant! Thank you for explaining the science of what happens when you eat a wide variety of plants! This is what I’ve been doing for a year. 45-47 lbs lost. I’m 55 post menopausal…tried every “diet” under the sun ☀️ 😊. Feel great again! Trust the science 🧬 don’t give up, there’s hope! Cut out processed food & animal products. The link between eating fiber and feeling full, through the short chain fatty acids, was fascinating. I guess it's fiber, or take ozempic.... You'd think this should make beans more popular.

Started eating carnivore 1 month ago and here are my results:
    1. 90 day glucose count from 127 to 103
    2. 30 day glucose count at 88
    3. Joint pains (knee) 95% gone (only feel a bit sore if I do weight training for legs)
    4. Bleeding, swollen, sensitive gums gone (receding gums growing back)
    5. Numbness in fingers gone
    6. Hair shedding much less and thinning hairs are growing back
    7. Waist and love handles melting off
    8. Bloating after meals gone
    9. Body odor gone (even when I sweat or haven’t showered)
    10. Constipation gone (regular soft poo 💩 )
    11. Better sleep
I don’t know but I never felt this way eating the rainbow or saw anything close to this in my body and health. I’m sticking to a carnivore diet and see where it takes me. The results so far are amazing.

I'm getting so befuddled. 57yr old female . Since really upping my protein intake and starting resistance training I've got my old shape back. I started the resistance training 2 months before upping the protein and it was the change in diet that really made things happen.
So, on the one hand, we have this podcast saying veggies and vegans have a better BMI (although BMI can be very deceptive) and that a veggie, high fibre diet is best, but then on the other there's all this evidence that most people arent eating enough protein and we need even more as we get older.
Perhaps I'm comparing apples with pears. Should the takeaway be: eat much more fibre AND get enough protein?

I think so, after reading and researching a lot on this topic. However, I want to underscore that building strength via exercise seems to me the key regardless of your diet.. Muscle strength can only come from muscle stress/ repair and I think the protein issues, with all the debate ongoing on social media, from the quality to the quantity, etc, has become a distracting message, so confusing that people are truly loosing the most important picture.

I think it depends on the individual too. Not everyone can eat a high fiber diet or handle a bunch of veggies. Like me. If I eat high fiber all it does is constipate me for like 5 or 6 days. I have EDS: Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. If you have that you do not do well with high fiber + it can be dangerous. Plus I have autism. Many people who are on the spectrum have issues with oxalates and chemicals. And veggies are often treated with stuff. Unfortunately. So then I react to the stuff sprayed on the veggies. Have celiac gene so I do not tolerate anything run on shared equipment with any grain. Add in a corn allergy and corn derivatives are used on lots of produce unfortunately - so there are a bunch I have to avoid due to the corn. 😐
I do best on a ketovore type diet. Which is mostly meat based (grass fed beef × lamb) plus organic prunes + watermelon. Last summer I tried eating nectarines but after awhile I was getting severely potsy from them - must have been sprayed with some corny stuff. 😐 my heart rate was jumping from 55 laying down to 112 standing up. That is SEVERELY potsy. I stop eating the nectarines + it goes away. My allergies trigger the pots.
So not everyone can actually eat that stuff safely. Allergies do not go away. Especially if they are gene related. My connective tissue is not even normal and the gut is lined witu connective tissue.
You should listen to your body.
Countless people find a carnivore type diet very helpful, sometimes even for autoimmune. Veggies are full of not only pesticides but also plant toxins like nightshades, lectins × oxalates.
I am quite healthy on my ketovore diet. I don't catch colds or flu. Never had that C19 either. I am lean with muscles at 51. Have a resting heart rate of 55. And I walk long distances + go hiking. Do yoga + I ride horses (learning to ride that is - have not learned the trot yet).
So I say it depends on how YOU handle fiber. For some people fiber can be a huge enemy. Veggies also give me all sorts of other issues like joint pain, peeling skin, raw tongue (actual raw spots on it from the oxalates), burning throat, etc. Its not only "just bloating". Its way more. Walking + being pain free when I have a condition like EDS is more important than eating some dumb veggie that is going to wreck havoc on my body!
Go check out Dr Berry if you want. Or Elliot at Eonutrition. He talks about oxalates. And your microbiome can be just great on carnivore too. I do tons of walking so I do supplement with many main nutrition on my diet. Have great blood pressure (last Dr visit it was 100/60) and my weight is 111 pounds. At 51 years old. I can walk a half marathon when I want to. 😊

This is a fantastic summary of the current evidence showing the power of high fiber foods to promote metabolic health. It’s a slam dunk: plants are powerful!
I want to add that Roy Taylor’s work on “personal fat threshold” is also relevant since you can eat a very high fiber diet and still be consuming too many calories. This interview shows that you’re less likely to eat too many calories on a diet high in whole plants which is what is most relevant to most people. But if you’re already plant-based and struggling with cardiometabolic issues, listen to Simon’s interview with Roy Taylor. I'd like to see this topic discussed more in plant-based circles.
The interview briefly touched on the low fat approach of Mastering Diabetes but didn’t really explain the pros and cons. I think Simon’s addressed this elsewhere in his work but it may be a good topic for a deeper dive.

Oh no, not _another_ supplement company! I bought both his books. The second, even better than the first. But now I'm dubious. The number of MD's, entrepreneurs, UA-cam influencers, and celebrities with supplements in their name is overwhelming today. There must really be a big margin in supplements. I'm also dubious of the "personalised nutrition" field. Much of this sounds antithetical to his books. I'll have to see what evolves.

Dr. W. acknowledges that the supplement industry has many shady players. It's ridiculous that they have so little regulatory oversight in the USA for the medical claims they make and the purity of their ingredients. Check third-party sites that have tested the products for purity, and do your homework and talk to your doctor before starting to supplement.

Zoe has the potential to merge commercial and scientific interests in a groundbreaking way for personalized nutrition as long as the people in charge stay committed to their mission. Of course, financial incentives can corrupt any business in the loosely regulated wellness space, but so far, Zoe seems like a force for good.

What is your beef with supplements? Obviously it does not replace a well balanced diet but not everyone can always a well balanced diet and as such supplements can be quite handy if they have the effective dosage of each ingredient. For example I do not tolerate stimulants at all whether it be caffeine, nicotine, methylphenidate etc., so nootropic supplements such as l-tyrosine, alpha-GPC and functional mushrooms does wonders for my ADHD and mood regulation. Don't knock it if other people can actually benefit from it. Like clothing and shoes are not fundamental to ones well-being but we wear it. Sunscreen is great to protect one's skin from the harmful rays of the sun but you won't die if you do not apply it. A lot of people who suffer from IBS, IBD, Crohn's disease etc. could potentially benefit from Dr Will's supplements if it has the effective dosage of each ingredient based on solid scientific evidence. Listen to the data not people's opinions.

    • @Joseph1NJ
      @Joseph1NJ 8 місяців тому

@@lucianowillemse8244 Other than what I've already said, they're unregulated, they're rarely tested to actually contain what's on the label, rarely tested to be effective, they can promise anything they want without consequence, no one knows where the source ingredients come from, or even what country, and basically it's become a sleazy business.
But the margins are really good, especially if you're an influencer. Virtually no one is really in the supplement business, it's mostly just branding. Think about it, how is it you get supplients warning "manufactured in a facility that also processes shellfish and nuts?" Because it's one huge factory.

Kommetjie has great beaches for surfing or walking if not windy. The walk to noordhoek beach is cool. Hike up lions head great. Hike up back side of Table mountain (not cable car side) good. Smitswinkelbay (sp?) is a cool trail down to a small beach, baboons are often in the car park. Mostly I surfed and went to school, so not too many recommendations I guess. Then later he talks about the glucose test, two people consuming same amount of glucose, and one having a high glucose blood spike and the other not suggesting insulin resistance. Well, which one is it then?

I make this comment because of all the people that claim they have no idea how and what to eat. These people watch these presentations and probably do very little in response. I also recognize this is a pro plant based message and am shocked once again that animal foods are almost completely ignored for any positive contribution. If you’re confused at the end of this I understand.
I’m 66 and very healthy with all the markers to support my status, including a coronary artery calcium scan. I’m animal based and I don’t come close to the fiber consumption recommendations promoted here. I eat this way because it’s given me great results and I’ve tried all the popular diets over the last 45 years, from full vegan to full carnivore. I don’t have any of the popular bad habits like smoking, etc. I eat 2 meals per day. I don’t eat processed foods. I prioritize protein mainly in the form of red meat and organs. I include a little intentional fat and a cooked plant to finish it off. I drink water. I’m a regular exerciser and can and do compete with guys half my age. If you’re still confused and looking for a plan I just gave you one. Good luck!!

Great video however I was at my heaviest and most ill when I was eating the whole rainbow. I was born fat and only got fatter and fatter until I cut out many plants. It's not just the fiber or diversity of plants there is something missing! Maybe adding fermented foods would help. Or maybe we are too clean or something. The studies have shown that just adding fiber is not enough. If you don't have the right microbes you can't use the fiber! Trust me I know this from personal experience. Also even though I was grossly overweight if anything I was UNDER EATING. So not all overweight people are over eating! I f I had en eating disorder it was more like anorexia. I have never been a binge eater and I have never been a junk food or candy eater. So why was I fat??? I'm still learning just like the rest of us. I hope that some day I can get to the bottom of this for myself and my family Thanks for this video😊

This gloating over results of plant based study vs high saturated fat keto diet is getting old and only adds fuel to the Food Wars. Keto is a niche segment of the population so the comparison gets lost and is unusable for most of us. Compare the results of a more Mediterranean style, omnivore diet, low in saturated animal fat from lean meats and seafood. Also without looking at the holistic health of the individual, over several decades, especially as we age, I just don't see most plant-based folks being as dedicated to hitting all the macro-nutrient requirements as you do Simon. Hat tip to you Simon, but I think the message shouldn't center on being a vegan, it should be that adding more plant-based foods into any diet type will be helpful. This is a more probable scenario for the majority of people.

  • @sabincioflec8413

At one hour and 5 minutes, they are talking about LC vs LF diet, and that you lose muscle on LC diet. Low carb high fat can be made in a variety of ways, adding liver for the folate and the methylation cycle, adding omega 3s that act as prebiotics and dampen inflammation and help preserve muscle, overall making a well formulated keto diet would actually make you gain muscle and lose fat. I'm sure he has an agenda that plants are so good and so wonderful, sadly for him and others like him is that the carnivore community si growing and people are thriving on a 0 fiber diet so everything he says goes out the window. One point i'll concede is that berries and fruits that haven't been changed to have a ton of fructose are healthy IN SEASON and not whole year around.
IF you do have a diverse microbiome then plants can be somewhat beneficial but not mandatory.
I lost interest after that, pushing a narrative is always detrimental to science and just implying fiber is vital for health is plain wrong.
