My experience with shortening a machete is that only the edge is hardened and the balance of the steel is still annealed. So cutting the annealed spine is relatively easy with a saw, but the hardened edge is usually snapped off or ground down. Since the hardened edge is only 1/2 inch or so, not a problem...
That's interesting. What kind of machetes have you cut down? This was from an Ontario brand. We were thinking about making another one out of a South American one next.

Just use a thin cut wheel on a grinder, are you live in the Stone Age?
Why would You ever consider using a cold chisel to cut Somthing hard like that i would be more concerned about the blade shattering
