Winnipeg folk trio The Wailin' Jennys dropped by CBC Radio 2's Drive for a Session to perform music from their new album 'Bright Morning Stars'. This is their Emmylou Harris' song 'Deeper Well'.
I've always loved Emmylou's version, in fact it's one of my favorite songs she's done, but this version just blew me away! Simply fantastic!
Music is subjective and so is the experience of listening. No need for corrections. Music is about what you want it to be about. Nothing more, nothing less.
These musicians are amazing.
Viola Man gets my juices going too but it's the way the girls turn the end chorus into this kind of round that gives me chills every time.
One of the best covers of the Emmylou Harris classic!!
Giving her a run for the money!
Emmylou’s version was actually a cover of a song by David Olney. She changed the lyrics quite a big. I think his original lyrics were better.
Don't know why these guys didn't win the Grammys for - "best Live recording in a studio by a group"
Simply amazing....
probably because they are Canadian; not very important to the money grubbing scum of the American music industry
These women are amazing.
I could not stop dancing! Not a lot of music moves me like that did! Thank you! Thank you!
That vocal round at the end is really something.
Mesmerizing! I’ve loved this song since I first heard you perform it. Wow!
The Best Harmonies EVER!!
that fiddle break was sick!
Ruth's brother, Richard is on violin- he's as amazing as they are! If you ever get a chance to see them live, they will blow you away!
Isn't that a viola?
Hope Emmylou has heard this ... they should have been invited to her induction to the hall of fame
It is amazing how challenging it actually is to play the Bodron like that . . . and the voices are so rich and pure
Thanks for that!
Didn't know what that was called.
Yep I was watching
closely, it looks challenging.
Mesmerizing!
Thanks for that! Didn't know what that was called.
I was watching closely. It does
look challenging!
Mesmerizing 😲
@@jenettenelson7427 Let's hear it for the Celts/ Irish :-)
Ah, the Jennys can rock too! Fantastic performance.
These gals are beautiful.. sound like angels. Love it
the bodhrán locked me in immediately. The viola takes you across continents ...what a tune!!
i wish i could like more than once this video!
The viola introduction, my goodness!! It's so good!
Dude rocked the viola... and the Jennies were excellent, as usual. Yummy ear candy. Thanks!
this is madness !!!!! to damn dope song , real music
Very few songs can cause your life to flash before your eyes.
inspiring voices and harmonies!
love that bodhran drum!
Fantastic show last night at Infinity Hall in Hartford! Thank you beautiful Jennys! I always look forward to your shows!
Just discovered them. And love there sound.
Discovering new musicians to love is the best!
They rock in concert!
Rest in peace, songwriter David Olney.
believe it was co-written by Emmylou Harris, Daniel Lanois and David Olney. It's First release was by David Olney.
Violin player is Richard Moody. An astounding Musician held in VERY high regard in the Canadian Music scene.
Moody is great!
00045s That’s actually a viola on this performance, but I agree he is awesome!
Ole berthelsen
It's actually a viola here, though I'm not sure if he also plays violin :)
And he's the brother of Ruth, the woman he's standing next to.
Simply beautiful.
Yes, and it cannot be said often enough, David Olney wrote the song. Here and elsewhere he gets far too little credit for this and his many other great songs ---- and, as much as I adore the Wailin' Jennys in their several iterations and even though they may do the best version of David Olney's song, they too fail to make note of his authorship when performing the song. I think all performers should give credit when credit is due --- especially when they nail it as the Jennys do with Deeper Well.
Mesmerizing!
Pretty sure David Olney wrote 'Deeper Well', and both Daniel Lanois and Emmylou Harris (on her 'Wrecking Ball' album, produced by Lanois) have done iconic versions of it. Superb song.
You are correct. Olney wrote the original song, Emmylou liked it and asked Olney if she could make a few changes in the lyrics and he graciously (and with thanks that she wanted to record it) said YES, by all means.
Sensational stuff! What amazing harmonies
How could 11 people give this thumbs down????
They are Nicki Minaj fans who got lost.
Bc they can't appreciate great music ;)
There's no accounting for taste - or the lack of it.
Love that bodhrán!
Fantastic!
Great video! BTW - this song was actually written by David Olney and originally released on Philo/Rounder Records. It was covered by Emmylou Harris after she tweaked a line of lyrics to be more feminine for her delivery.
Stunning.....and yet somehow in the mainstream music scene acts with just a fraction of the talent make the $
That's simply becuase the vast majority of simple minded idiots out there don't cope with anything as complex as this.
word !
Little woods brought me here.
beautiful
beauti!!!! bravo!!!
GOING TO LISTEN FOR A SECOND TIME.
saw these 3 + the brother last night! FABULOUS!
Nice job on David Olney song.
❤❤❤
I stand corrected -- Deeper Well was actually written by David Olney and recorded in 1988. Thank you erock2229
believe it was co-written by Emmylou Harris, Daniel Lanois and David Olney. It's First release was by David Olney.
This is originally David Olney's song, Emmylou Harris just covered it.
Stellar performance! =)
I'm a Ruth fan myself. If she can play the bodhran like that, imagine what she could achieve with a wooden spoon and a packet of almond paste.
One of the best comments I've ever seen! Love it! And I'm with you 100%!
This is really good.
This is nice CBC Canadian Heritage Gorden Lightfoot Canadian Heritage Folk Music Songs of CANADA!!!!
I love watching how much fun the bass player is having (sorry idk their names.)
Sarah Wilkinson That's Heather Masse, and I've always thought the same thing. Check out their video for the song "Bird Song" at Prairie Home Companion. She's definitely having a good time.
Oh, my! Oh my!
Also, gotta say, why does this group not get more exposure? Really... Miley humps a wrecking ball, here we only have 100K views.... sad.
There are a half-dozen versions of them doing this one on YT, though IMO this is the best.
again - see above
my 3 yr. old girl: "that's so beautiful!!"
Due respect to Emmy Lou... this version rocks as well! (no pun intended)
Awesome !!!
The song is from David Olney by the way.
yes! very WELL
From "Spyboy" a GREAT Emmylou Harris project with mighty Buddy Miller but the song was written by David Olney.
.........................................................:::WoW:::...
@justasingergal It's called a Bodhran, it's an irish traditional instrument:)
Oh. Yes. :)
fucking awesome
They are all performing with their eyes closed
folks play with their ears.
👍👏
The one person who disliked this didn't look for the water.
That is a VIOLA being played, not a violin.
yes - the size gives it away, also the sound
He gets far too little credit for his great songs, so much so that to their discredit The Wailin' Jennys don't give on stage credit to him either, but this song was written by David Olney. That's David Olney.
proper credit is not always up to or possible by performers .- music biz often not, shall we say, ethical or reasonable
OMG OMG OMG OMG
It's Ruth Moody's brother on violin, but I forget his first name.
they sound exactly like the wailin' jennys!
I wish the Jennys ample financial reward, the admiration of their peers, and a following that is cult-like in its devotion. I do not wish them great exposure and huge fame. They wouldn’t like it. Nobody does.
They're not a band anymore. Ruth left them several years ago. :(
Carpe Diem
No they are still together! Recently have been on tour and are taking a year off in 2019. Released a new Album this past year titled “Fifteen”.
Why do I hear Richie Havens strumming along in the rythem section?
that is an interesting style of violin music. does anyone know what kind of music it is?
This is actually written and first performed by another Canadian -- Daniel Lanois. Love the great fiddle work by Jeremy Penner.
Actually it was written by David Olney and recorded in 1988.
oops.
And . . . the fiddle is being played here by Richard Moody (Ruth's brother). Jeremy Penner has played for the Jennys in the past, including on their live album.
Thank you.
@ebennett7 *viola
Ok, it's been 9 years + since this song was put up on UA-cam, so a bit late for meaningful comments, but... These are obviously talented musicians, but they have missed the point of this song, especially as it was originally recorded by EmmyLou Harris. This is a deeply personal, meditative song that addresses anguish, addiction, the futility of life, the search for meaning and other serious issues that do not lend themselves to this speed-of-sound rendition, however artfully performed. WJs sound like they are more in search of another double expresso from Starbucks than they are in search of a deeper well.
Totally agree, David. They are supremely talented, but this does *not* work at this tempo.

So hot it burned my eyes.... Maybe that's why you don't one them
what is the drum called??
Bodhran... Irish drum.
GO VIOLA.
No.David Olney wrote this.
That is a viola.....
Open
What about the violin player ? He doesn't deserve to be cited here ????
Richard Moody, who also plays with The Bills. He is an amazing musician, and the brother of Ruth Moody.
Viola player.
Are they married :P
way too fast but very nice harmonics!
*Choral. Said like horse "corral." Not chorus.
maybe it was [a very nervous] Emmylou... :)
A waste of time...stick to the original version..
It's too bad they never open their eyes. It really spoils it.
Shows you how much of a difference the right tempo makes... they sped it up to try to make it feel more exciting, and now it feels like a horse race and they can't articulate the words.
