- Hey everyone! its been awhile since I've uploaded, but heres a video on how to replace a thermostat in a mazdaspeed3/6. Gen2 should be even easier as they don't have a power steering pump in the way. Enjoy!

Just helped my son do this. We didn’t remove the belt or loosen the power steering pump. Got the top left bolt from above and the top right and bottom bolts from underneath
Took us about 3 hours
Very useful video, pretty much the only resource on everything involved with replacing speed3 thermostat. everything else is for just a mazda3. Thank you for the vid, followed along on my genjuan that killed the thermostat last week
How do you know when the thermostat goes bad? Should they be replaced at a certain mileage?
I had my intake manifold off yesterday bc I was changing the pcv plate and noticed it was very easily accessible. Went ahead and changed the thermostat as well. Hoses were definitely the most annoying thing about it. Good vid 🤘
Christopher Holden oh yea, with the manifold off, super easy, and allows you to really get a grip on those hoses to crack them loose.

Very helpful video. I just picked up a 2nd gen speed 3 yesterday and unfortunately first thing I have to do is replace the thermostat
Glad to help! Luckily the 2nd gen is the easiest one out of the speeds!

@@mortysmith5556 so the crappy version I was always running like 220, the new one took it back down to 185-195 range
u can just loosend bottom power steering pump bolt and remove the two top ones.then slide ur pump to the side but not all the way.then u can remove intake.then u dont have to take belt off
Bought the stupid Motorad before doing research. Luckily found this and the Dorman is on the way. Blew up my speed had to swap the motor now I have 3 codes(po128, po172, po421) and it's looking like hopefully changing the thermostat should solve them all. Thanks for the information! (Rip your phone lol)
Yea, those moto rads are trash. Unfortunately it’s the most common and easiest to find
Putting back on the power steering pump and getting belt back on would you have to loosen tension pulley to get back on
No. Put a wrench on the tensioner pulley bolt. You’re just moving the tensioner back and forth, it’s not actually loosening anything

Was the thermostat you used at the end of your video the one in your description? If so how was that thermostat working? Was it better than the oem?
Joe Espino yes I put the dorman one in and it works great. It seems to work the same as oem pretty much but at 1/3 of the price

Yes the thermostat works for gen1/2. It’s been about 190 cruising and with ac on. Slow or stopped without ac will push it up to 210-220 depending on how long you sit, that’s more of a mazdaspeed thing than thermostat though

Oh no. Don’t do that, it won’t ever get up to operating temp. I tried that on a couple thermostats that ran too hot and just one small hole made it run at like 150 lol
Do you need to disconnect the battery for this?
It’s not going to hurt anything either way. I never disconnected it because the only wiring you mess with is just the power steering reference wire
Honestly guy you where head on about the parts store thermostat.I got one it was TRASH. Got a OEM Mazda brand off Amazon coming

I would like to personally kick the balls of the designer who made this SO ridiculously complicated! Just like replacing the frigging HEADLAMPS (which requires removing the bloody bumper - would love to see a lady do THAT on the road)! Oh yeah, "brilliant Japanese automotive engineers"... 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
