    There was one other thing I forgot to mention: the map remains stuck in a modal vacuum. No attempt is made to show ferry/tram interchanges at all.

      Decent but not a fan of how inconsistent some of your spacing is. Like why are the southern lines so close together with small station spacing but then there's a huge gap to the northern and northwest metro lines? It makes the whole map look unbalanced, bottom heavy and have massive white spaces in between. And then some of the massive station gaps on the T5, T1 and T9 lines just look a bit off. If geography doesn't matter in a diagram-map, why not just have the stations look more consistent? Also not a fan of cutting the city circle so in half like that (can look pretty confusing at first glance). Hopefully I haven't come across too harshly
      Not a bad map but in my opinion I think some tweaks would make it better

      Because they’re transport connections. They shouldn’t necessarily show the ferry/tram routes but at least show where the interchanges are with a little icon or something. This already happens on the SOP event bus map, so it’s clearly possible.

    Your map is not an improvement at all. Not only is it inaccurate, Victoria Cross and Crows Nest are literally 500m or less from North Sydney and St Leonard's, so why would separating the lines so exaggeratedly help whatsoever??

    • @thetrainguy4
      @thetrainguy4  2 місяці тому +3

      It’s not meant to be geographically accurate. Placing lines parallel has meaning in these maps- it means the liens run in the same corridor which is not true in this case.

    • @gmponza
      @gmponza 2 місяці тому +5

      @@thetrainguy4 But the thing is it doesn't matter in this case, and I'd go as far as saying that depicting the metro line as running along the same corridor is actually quite beneficial here. The Crows Nest and Victoria Cross stations are in reality directly adjacent to their heavy rail counterparts, St Leonards and North Sydney, which the current map perfectly depicts. If geographical accuracy doesn't matter, then why did you change it?

    • @thetrainguy4
      @thetrainguy4  2 місяці тому

      Because parallel lines have special meaning on transport maps, a meaning which does not hold in this case. The distance between stations is also irrelevant as easier interchanges are available at Central and Chatswood.

    • @gmponza
      @gmponza 2 місяці тому

      @@thetrainguy4 It’s not just about the interchange, North Sydney and St Leonards are destinations in their own right. Passengers that want to get from the north west (or even south west in the future) to St Leonards or North Sydney will enjoy a faster journey by just taking the metro to Crows Nest or Victoria Cross instead of changing at Chatswood or Central. By separating the lines you are just making way-finding more difficult for those who simply want to get around, and you are telling those people that they have to change at Chatswood or Central to get to their destinations, when this isn’t the case at all.

    • @thetrainguy4
      @thetrainguy4  2 місяці тому +1

      You don’t use these maps for last mile connections. You use these maps to plan a journey between defined stations. I don’t think the official set up does it any better than mine to be honest, it’s not clear that they are especially close.
      If they wanted to introduce out-of-station interchanges they could use dotted lines, too, like the tube map.

One thing, are you able to make a version of your map with the line thickness and station circles the same proportions as on the London Underground network map or the Hong Kong MTR network map? I strongly agree that M1 Metro North West & Bankstown Line is a bad name for the route and that they should come up with entirely new name, one thats one word would be preferable.
    Edit. I want to remain neutral and I am not here to debate whether including Indigenous names is needed, but if renaming Pitt Street station to Gadigal was something they had to do to honour the first nations people, then what they could have done is rename the entire Metro line "The M1, Gadigal Line". Gadigal refers to a large area south east of Sydney, so calling the a single stop isn't exactly specific enough. Naming a line after a region, area, district is quite reasonable and very common common around the world.

This is handy in many ways especially for tourists and those unfamiliar with the Line. This can also be used for way-finding and simplifying platform displays.

    If I'm being honest, the map is OK. Not great, not bad.
    My biggest issues would be:
    (as you said) the clutter on the City Circle, especially when during my first look at it, I genuinely thought that they forgot to add Martin Place and Gadigal/Pitt St because of how squished in the stations were.
    I'm on the fence about the colour choice of the T6 as it definitely does a good job at blending with the T3 whilst also showing it as a separate line, but it's just weird to look at.
    I'm not a fan of the area around Sydenham, Wolli Creek and Turrella as it just feels so cluttered. Adding on to that - I hate the new green line branching off the T8 now completely skipping Tempe causing a lot of confusion, despite the fact that T8 trains skip Tempe anyways (plus - what happens if there's a trackwork weekend where T8 trains stop at Tempe??)

  • @whophd

    Oh no oh no. I was promised there was a fancy name coming, like “Gadigal Line”. They told me this at the Waterloo Station tour.
    And can we just mention: “M1” or any number is pointless. They might join up all the metro lines anyway. But we almost-nearly-maybe cleaned up the last naming mess with Metrobus (M10, etc) overlapping with Motorway numbering, then Labor has to come back in and now we have two M-sequences again.

    I thought Metro southwest was about taking the T3 out of the city circle to ease congestion. Well looking at this map the T3 will still clog up the City Circle and will also add more trains an already overcapacity Parramatta mainline. Also Yagoona and Birrong loose direct rail service. They could easilly route the new T6 as a Bankstown to Parramatta service. That would benefit more people then just shuttling back and fourth between Lidcombe

    • @Alex333_
      @Alex333_ 2 місяці тому

      Not necessairly getting rid of the T3 was more about unclogging pathways into the city and not the CC as the intention was always to alocate current T3 services to the current T2 and T8. The new T3 line is effectively just an extra line to differentiate the new planned T2 services through the inner west which may be neccessary/unnecessary depending on how you view it. The local main line defintley has more capacity for services especially during the off peak.

    • @kyletopfer7818
      @kyletopfer7818 2 місяці тому

      1) The Metro SW conversion was about taking T3 trains out of the city circle and allowing up to 6 more trains per hour to run on the T2 and the T8, yes - it has nothing to do with maps.
      2) The locals on the corridor between Lidcombe and Cabramatta lobied hard for the T3 direct service to the City to be returned, most people that know anything thought it was a bad idea because there are only 4 tracks from Lidcombe to Homebush so there is still a significant bottleneck there. The answer should be a tunnel from Parramatta to Homebush which would allow faster express trains to run at 160kmh and free up the existing tracks for more local services.
      3) Birrong is the least-used station between Lidcombe and Sydenham, Yagoona is the third least-used; so putting those onto a shuttle is for the greater good. They will likely still have faster journeys once M1 opens anyway. But personally I think if the Government has no plans to extend the M1 from Bankstown to Liverpool they should just convert the Bankstown line to Sefton and build a cross-platform interchange.
      4) No they couldn't because there are significant bottlenecks on the Western line between Homebush and Blacktown if you have a look at the documentation.

      No it should be called Town Hall. Everyone knows where that is and the Metro is linked to the 6 Town Hall platforms via a pedestrian walk and mall. Pitt Street runs from Circular Quay to Central and beyond so it is not a specific location.

    It's just an interim map. Get over it.

      I had always thought 2024 was the year a redesign would occur, if one was planned… do you think a 2025 map would feature a major design overhaul?

      It really isn’t, the only changes next year are metro extension and T8 service cut to Sydenham.

      Yes, they'll need to update in 2025 and again in 2026 for the airport metro. Hopefully we'll see a redesign at one of these points.

      @@staryoshi06 IIRC, T8 trains will no longer regularly run through Sydenham, stopping at Erskineville and St Peters. T4 trains will stop at Erskineville and St Peters instead.

    I absolutely hate the names of these lines. Just give them a number designator and forget the descriptive words like inner west or south. People know when you say T3 Liverpool line. T2 Parramatta line. T1 Penrith. T1 Richmond. T4 Cronulla. T4 Bondi Junction. The T6 is not going to last so have it whatever it is right now.
