Thanks for watching everyone. This video originally started out as a Fallout 3 10th anniversary video, but as I played more of 76 and the other games I wanted to make it more about Bethesda as a whole. And for those of you wondering, I do think Fallout: New Vegas is the better Fallout game over all, but I hope I’ve convinced you as to why Fallout 3 is awesome in its own way.

I had never heard of Fallout when the third entry came out during my senior year of high school. I saw the trailer and knew it was from the same team that made Oblivion and that was all I needed. I remember the chaos as I left the Vault. I killed the Overseer for being a jerk and remember his daughter got mad at me and never wanted to speak to me again. I remember being awestruck at the ramifications of a choice I had made without a second thought.
Bethesda has made some questionable decisions with Fallout, but I never would have even heard of one of my favorite franchises in gaming if they hadn't acquired the rights to it.

With so many cool places to explore it made the game world feel so immersive and alive. I finally find an youtube video that is impartial regarding of what bethesda did right and wrong with Fallout franchise, all other videos that are right now on youtube are basically bashing bethesda because of Falllout 76... My feeling is the same, the best fallout game is a game that has the exploration of fallout 3, the rpg elements of fallout nv and the crafting&shooting of fallout 4. I always loved the exploration in TES games (oblivion and skyrim) but if they can combine that with the best elements of New vegas and Fallout 4, I think that we will get another masterpiece. If not for Bethesda, Fallout probably wouldn't have been as popular after the fall of Black Isle. FO1&2 are great games, but to anyone who's not a cRPG fan they're just not very interesting. Bethesda changed that by incorporating their own FPS open world design and streamlining several original systems. They brought the franchise to a much wider audience, and that's a fact.
It's also a fact that they didn't want to stop there. From FO3 to 4, then to 76, the goal of the studio has been painfully obvious. They don't just want more players. They want all of them, even at the expense of what made their previous titles and the entire franchise so interesting in the first place. Obviously, their latest endeavor has backfired. Hope they see it not as an insult but an opportunity.

@Grym I Agree however, if companies don't cater to a wider audience these days, then they either get in financial difficulty or don't get the recognition. Games cost far more money and time to develop these days, due to them being larger and having more overheads. So, companies simply have to make money and if they don't, they go under.....just like Interplay (Black Isle Studios) did, years ago. The fact is Crpg's are (and always were) very risky investments, since they have such a very niche market. They are never going to sell millions of copies and so, will never have a big budget to spend or a large development team. The only companies that will even touch them these days, are small Indy studios, which is ok, until these companies produce a financial flop (which is very easy to do in a niche market). This recently happen to both Obsidian and InXile, who where both at tipping point and about to go bankrupt, until Microsoft threw them a life line, at the very last minute.
If they wanted to survive, then they really should have taken a leaf out of Larian Studios book (Divinity games), who realized this, a few years ago when they were at the tipping point. What they did was to not only bring several modern twists to the genre, but also, catered to the wider audience (console users)
Honestly, some people think that Fallout is bad, under Bethesda, but if I remember correctly, the only other party that showed interest in the Fallout IP, when Interplay went bankrupt, was Activision..........now try to imagine that.

New Vegas is just as good at environmental storytelling. Examples: the cutlery that's fallen through the floor of the BoS bunker, the survivalist and his logs, and locations like the Devil's Throat. Also, though all of the best quests can occur as part of the main quest, very few of them are essential components of the main quest, and most of them can be started and completed outside of the main quest. I do think 3 gives has a richer environment to explore, but I think this has a lot to do with Obsidian's limited development time/having to re-use old Fo3 assets.

One thing to add about the older fallout games ,far harbour and even the elder scrolls games when compared to fallout 4 and 76 is that the world feels organic, hard to explain but the Commonwealth just feels like a place with things in it and only a few real things at that, not an actual living world

unless Bethesda is perfectly content losing every bit of a respect they've ever garnered in the RPG genre (is fallout 76 even selling well? i just know damn well it's universally getting torn apart by critics and fans), they have no hope of ever reclaiming the throne CDPR has ousted them off.
they gotta really start stepping the fuck up or at least relegating story writing and characters to competent companies like Obsididan since all Bethesda is concerned about is world building. that's not even necessarily a slight at them because I think that's always been an area they've shined in and despite TES/Fallout degrading in many, many other regards in the past few installments, the worlds they've been building are constantly improving in quality and variety imo.
like New Vegas is by far my favorite entry in the fallout series, but fallout 4 objectively has a far more varied and unique wasteland and even fallout 3 does too to a degree.

The story is spread out across the world and is interconnected across the ENTIRE region. In movies we complain about exposition dumps but it's funny that in games we seem to be annoyed when story is delivered in anything but.

Piecing together a story organically by discovering different parts in an order unique to you ORGANICALLY builds out the story and engages the player in its telling because YOU put it together. There is nothing engaging about Preston Garvey telling me the entire history of the Minutemen in a 20 minute dialogue tree... Not to say dialogue trees can't deliver information in an interesting way (Far Harbor is a great example of this), just that 76 can ALSO tell a compelling narrative too without them.

its my opinion that they fucked up regarding PVP. they should have made it a toggle. where you are either in PVP or you aren't. OR, made PVP servers. its cool to explore and build and have stuff to do, but in the end. (IMO) i want to see how well i can do with all this stuff i now have. let me go out and find people to kill, to loot. and with looting, make it to where only like 10% or 5% of their stuff is lootable. so they can find your house, kill your turrets, break down the door. find your storage locker and after all that give them something for their efforts. have them have access to like 5% of all your stuff. and then add something in to where they can't loot you again for a week or something. if they happen to find you again later, and they kill your turret and break down your door, and open your stash, it will just be empty. OR make it to where you cant be looted more then once a day. this game is just missing the human element IMO.

I guess i am one of the few people who loves more exploration and a bit of story to get things moving forward. I played the original Fallouts and loved them. But then when i heard Bethesda, after Oblivion, was making Fallout, i was stoked for it. And they delivered. Fallout 3 was every bit amazing for a person who likes exploration. People hated the metros but the tense feeling of going into one and encountering raiders, ferals, super mutants was amazing. The map felt very lively right from Dunwich to Nuka cola museum. Though BoS were portrayed as nutjobs in previous games, they felt like knights in shining armor in FO3.
As we moved to Fallout NV, it was full of story and massive but amazing writing. But being a 3D game, same gamebryo engine, it felt very empty. Agreed there was a desert but there was no compulsion to actually go anywhere and explore. There were many factions and choices, but nothing seemed important at the end and watching NCR having their own trivial issues and delusional Legion, there was nothing left in the game form me. The hyped Vegas was barely 3 areas and quite underwhelming. I enjoyed the DLCs more cause the areas seemed much better.
Then came TESV:Skyrim and then FO4. I felt the games becoming dumbed down each iteration...probably cause of heavy console focus. Also the exploration and side quests or faction quests were quite small unlike Fo3 and Oblivion (the dark brotherhood and Fighters guild have long questlines). But as an exploratory game, they were fun. Creation engine looked very good back then. Even if the story is not strong, the game worlds kept me occupied.
And alas we have FO76. it gives me mixed feelings. it has everything for exploration and it just feels like an extremely huge area was added to FO4 (and i hope someday modders add applachia to FO4). if you play for too long , you feel right at home for a Bethesda game. but i didnt get the point of online multiplayer considering the map is so huge, you see a person hardly once in 2 hours and they just wave and go their separate ways. its as like playing a single player game.I understand the story tells you why the map is empty and it feels good to know how BoS started (a modification in lore is fine since its not like obsidian is ever going to go back and write it). I really hope we get to bring BoS or Enclave back to Applachia, and maybe Bethesda starts adding such DLCs to populate the world back with NPCs. As far as creation engine is considered, its buggy but the areas look amazing, especially the mire is creepy like Far harbor.

The original 2 had 50’s music but that was it. It had modern weaponry that you would see an any other shooter, but with some laser weapons. I feel the greatest thing Bethesda brought to the table was the wacky 1950’s theme that made it stand out from other post apocalyptic titles.
