  • In this video, Sailboat Rudder Rebuild, After Unstepping the mast in our last video, it's now time to get the rudder removed and see what over 30 years of bluewater crusing can do. It's important for us to do some of these big jobs on Balachandra now as we are planning to cruise to the carribean for up to a year so she needs to be completely reliable. In this video I remove the rudder, cut it open, inspect, clean, and replace the rudder core, then re-glass the rudder sealing it back up, then put it back on the boat (ALL IN ONE VIDEO!)

In August of 2017 I sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is our UA-cam sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and the occasional crewmembers(s) as we navigate the east coast of North America and beyond. We also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard in a cold climate. Sailing Balachandra is published weekly so please subscribe so you don't miss out on future videos!

Thanks for sharing there are a lot of people that have no idea what is involved in building and maintaining a boat. Well done!

    Nice vid.
I especially liked the AYC scenes. I just pulled my rudder off a Hinter 40.5 and I am glad I did it on the hard, because even though the books says that it is supposed to float, I am sure it would have gone to the bottom!

Hi thanks for the video. I have a question, I rebuilt mine similar to the way you did. I did however beef it up a bit. I was very proud of it until I took the boat out. Now it pulls to port when motoring over 4.7 knots. any suggestions?

Hi great video. I am doing the same project and your video has helped a lot. What did you use secure the rudder bearing in the rudder hole ? 4200 ? Epoxy ? I know you want to make sure it’s secure so it doesn’t spin in the rudder shaft hole. I am doing mine tomorrow.
What were your spacers at the top of the lower bearing made of. Mine was missing and I am trying to make a new one out of a cutting board. Any help would be appreciated

secondwind thanks for watching! Our rudder doesn’t have the same bearing you’re describing. Our rudder shaft is solid steel and a hole was milled straight through it so a long bolt can pass through. The bolt is much longer than the shaft to allow for 2 large brass bearing “wheels” which turn across a large aluminum disc. All that is well greased. The rudder is held secure by reinforced close fitting channels both in the hull and in the deck. I hope this helps?

Thanks for the great video. My rudder needs a rebuild, and I didn't want to spend what a yard would charge. Now I'm likely to to the rebuild it myself. How do you make sure the rudder shaft is centered (side to side) in the rudder? Is the webbing bonded to the insides of the rudder?

    • @SailingBalachandra

I was lucky in that my rudder was lined fore and aft with a thick filler which was holding everything in place solidly. If the filler wasn't there I would have made something using epoxy to hold the shaft and webbings in the center.

Thanks for your reply. Is it possible to drop the rudder while the boat is in the water, or is there too much floatation?

I wouldn't try that unless the rudder weighed nothing and was well above the waterline like an external rudder shaft. Despite the foam, my rudder would definitely sink to the bottom. Also with my boat, when waves hit the transom I'd have seawater coming right into the boat through the open hole.

How long did it take you from start to finish?
I imagine you put anti foul on, didn’t appear that way at the end of the video.

    • @SailingBalachandra

I put 3 coats of anti-foul on top of the barrier coat. The whole job could have been done in about a week but with my day job and my son I spread the work out over about 3 weeks
