I watched the original Heavy Metal back in the 80s and still have most of the comics. When Heavy Metal 2000 came out I had such high expectations that I was let down by it. I still like it but it will never achieve the cult status that the original has.
@@BlackWolf-bu5dtonly one other heavy metal movie that came out in the 80s it was a anthology movie with multiple stories, and a French magazine series of comic revolving around mature fantasy and science fiction stories that both this and the original was based on

Same. As a stand alone project it's great, as a sequel to one of the greatest cult animation anthologies ever made, it falls short on multiple levels. Very unfortunate. I enjoy both.
I see how you mean. On other hand though. just watched the full movie online. i'm glad i didnt buy the dvd cause i was going to. not bad, but barely below average. the "melting pot" graphic novel totally destroys this.
This was a bad idea from start to finish. In 2000, Heavy Metal magazine was no longer the cult classic it was in 1980. Heavy metal music was no longer as popular or cutting edge as it was in 1980. They should have made a follow-up movie around 1984 and used a whole different format. HM2K just wasn't as good. In the original, the movie drew inspiration from several different stories that were already popularized in the magazine. They stitched it all together using the Loc-nar, a mystical orb of great power and evil, that united the stories enough to suspend disbelief. They then added a killer soundtrack with a veritable who's who of music groups at the time. Many groups went out of their way to make music just for this movie. Most notably, Sammy Hagar sang about events in the segment about Tarna. He must have seen an advanced copy of the film to write that song. Also Blue Oyster Cult made a whole album full of auditions for the movie, and one made it in. HM2K was all centered on one forgettable story line about some extreme biker chick who goes around wasting bad guys for some reason. The music wasn't that great. None of it was really memorable. It was just there. I was excited that they made a "sequel", but it had nothing to do with the original. If it had a different name, nobody would connect it back to the original HM. I don't even recall any humor in it either. In the original, the segment about Capt. Lincoln F. Stern was funny and destructive. Also the Den segment was funny. It was a much more enjoyable movie. I've got a good analogy for you. Lord of the Rings. You watched it, you loved it, you laughed, you cried. Super epic movie trilogy. Then they made The Hobbit prequels. They kinda looked like LOTR. They dressed and talked like characters in LOTR. It just wasn't the same though. HM2K is even more of a deviation from the original, and more of a let down. I just noticed another thing. The animation seems very GI Joe, 1990's X-Men, or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The original used a more distinct animation style, with a lot of rotoscope animation, which is time consuming but produces startling results. Bomber scene: ua-cam.com/video/WtH0ZF6u0Hc/v-deo.html Corvette scene: ua-cam.com/video/3Ojne2qiC4I/v-deo.html The old Flash Gordon cartoon used rotoscoping, but that's about the only mainstream show I can think of. It makes for a stunning visual effect, especially in the days before CGI. The original HM has a distinctive look and feel, but HM2K feels very generic. If you've not seen it, don't buy the DVD. Watch this video and see if it thrills you. If not, you won't get much more from the whole thing.
II watched it today on Amazon Prime. I find it as an okay time waster. It's nowhere as good as Heavy Metal (which I have on DVD), but I don't mind it too much. The original will always be superior to Heavy Metal 2000. If they just call it F.A.K.K. 2 instead of Heavy Metal 2000, then it would be good on it's own.
Liked it enough to buy but it pales in comparison to the 1st movie. Julie's character was cool, but it felt like she carried the entire movie. Bad guy just struck me like an out of control jock, not someone possessed by what was supposed to be evil incarnate.
Monster Magnet (Silver Future), starts playing when the supervisor guy sees the green artifact. The other song? Not sure. “You stand, on the edge, of a Silver Future.”

Heavy metal is a comic. Contrast to popular belief it does NOT have to follow after the first film, nor will it. It is many different stories, and will continue to be that way.
I just learned the name of this movie today and cam imediately to youtube to see if someone uploaded it. I haven't seen this movie since I was 10 I think.
At times, I think the green crystal key is a fragment leftover from the Loc Nar from the first movie, hence driving Tyler crazy like the barbarian mutants in the Taarna segment.
I like to think Tyler was a decent guy before that green shard messed him up. I heard a theory that it's somehow connected to the Loc-nar from the original movie.
