The Dark Side of Being a Food Delivery Person | Informer

- Опубліковано 10 лют 2025
- A female delivery driver shares her experiences of demoralizing working conditions, sexual harassment, and neglect from her company - all to get customers their food.
Having worked for over two years for a major online food ordering and delivery platform, she explains how she has experienced issues common to everyone in the industry - like low and delayed pay - but also that being a woman brings extra struggles.
She has been assaulted by a customer and often feels unsafe, but may lose money if she turns down a job in an area she doesn't want to go to. She reveals that since the pandemic, hygiene issues have run rampant, with female drivers being forced to pee and handle their periods on the side of the road.
Informer is a series where we hear the anonymised confessions and insights of people on the inside of different industries, institutions and events.

My dad was a taxi driver for over 30 years, he built his own taxi company & had a bunch of employees, but he still went working himself because he was used to it. One morning he came back home & his face was full of bruises because someone tried to rob him. Another time someone was aiming a pistol on his head while they were driving. Thank God nothing really serious ever happened to him, but the job itself is very very dangerous, especially if you work the late night shifts.
I always thought, even before COVID hit, that these guys are angels. Amount of times their service allowed me to eat while I was sick/preparing for exams/writing my thesis is uncountable. Throughout the last 3 years of the pandemic, I thank god for grocery delivery and takeaway drivers. I'm entirely homebound, and from all sides, the people delivering my food as well as others who judge me for using these services constantly think I am just a lazy student ordering food because they can't be bothered to go out and get it themselves - when in reality, I'm often bedbound, don't own a car and am medically not allowed to drive, and I'm too far away from anything (even with a mall and a gas station like 2kms down the road) for me to use my wheelchair to get there. I am so thankful for the entire delivery industry because you're not just helping people get a meal, often you're giving me back a tiny bit of independence or the ability to keep living.
They're often horrible/inconsiderate of people with disabilities tbh
I always tip my Ubereats delivery driver. If we can tip the waiter for bringing food to our table, we can surely tip the driver for bringing food to our door.
You are a rare breed I guarantee
TIP IN CASH if you wanna be a real VIP. That way Uber or Amazon or whoever doesn't get any of it and neither does the tax man. I always, always, only tip in cash.
You PAY for delivery. You don't pay for food delivered to your table in a restaurant, hence, table service charge/tip.
@@kiradotee you just cheap 😄
@@kiradotee The delivery fee doesn't go to your delivery driver, tips are the only way we can make a living wage. Plus, we do more work than your waiter ever will.
People like you are the worst; luckily we can see whether you tip or not, so if your food comes cold or 30 mins late, remember; it's because the
experienced drivers skipped your order.
I've always felt a big amount of empathy for people who work for the food industry. Dealing with rude, toxic customers, low wage and the list goes on. I think a petition to pay these people more should be a thing because honestly it's one of the reasons why people in this industry are soo depressed.
I saw a delivery guy confused about where to go in my apartment complex. He was on the phone with a woman who was completely screeching at him and I could hear her through the phone. The dude's GPS didn't take him to her building and the numbers on the buildings were almost impossible to see. I helped direct him to the right building, but the look on his face. Oh my god. His long face reflected the depths of human misery. He had found himself so servile as to be yelled at like a servant, especially by people living in cheap apartments.
Customer service is absolute hell, but I've never worked a job where the interactions are strictly 1 on 1 like delivery drivers do. This allows people to feel more anonymous and be more abusive without other customers or employees as witnesses.
@KevKMaC Then you get fired and have to pay for the food that you did not deliver.
Problem not solved. Problem is now worse.
@KevKMaC Unfortunately with zero hour contracts they can tell you you are no longer needed for anything.

To remove workers rights.
@KevKMaC you can get fired for any reason at any time, they will fire people based on bad customer reviews. The bad customers even lord it over your head that they will "get you fired" while they are ranting at you. They will straight up fabricate stories. And you have no one to turn to because you are employed by an app.

Worked pizza delivery while going to school. Delivered to some questionable areas late at night that didn't feel safe. Been threatened, been verbally abused by drunk customers. Thankfully never assaulted or robbed, but I know others who were. You're more often than not delivering to someone who had a shitty day, who's too tired to cook, they're hungry so they're grumpy and you simply exist as a target of opportunity for their frustrations. It's a demeaning job because people look at you like you're bottom rung, and it's like you basically start to internalize it.
I was thankfully able to move on from that and start a career in the field that I was studying in, but it took a good year to mentally move past the delivery job.
I needed that “they’re grumpy and you simply exist as a target of opportunity for their frustrations “ part for a completely unrelated instance in my life. Thank you for that.

As a female delivery driver myself I can attest to almost everything she said especially the fact that it is a male dominated industry and it is often a pleasant surprise of seeing female couriers
Regarding the payment unfortunately it is also true that the business often deals with payment issues to the point where you’re working more than you’re getting paid but on the other hand I enjoy working as a courier because you’re basically your own boss and decide when and where you want to work and how many hours also the fact that you get the chance to explore the city and doing you’re own thing as long as you do your job is also amazing as well
It’s very bittersweet I convince myself that it is just a job that I got to work extra hard for and that it helps that the job is pretty fun
Also Since working as a courier I’ve been tipping the delivery drivers everytime I can because I understand how hard the job can be so definitely appreciate the an insider is sharing the experience of millions of couriers around the world who’re dealing with the same issues 👍🏾

The psychosis of these billionaires is getting worse and they're not gonna stop. We all need to quit falling for collectivist ideologies and start fighting for the rights of individual autonomy and real freedom. We sacrifice so much to people who really have no justifiable right to control any of us because they can't even help themselves from living in fear from a capitalist system that produces and manufactures it to the population. It's a damn shame how blind a population can get and how easily they can be used to attack anyone who opposes oppression. I live in not the greatest neighborhood in California but even when the sun is down I still need to make that money. I think the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that delivery and cab hire platforms should treat drivers as employees and provide them with benefits as opposed to contractors. Many were against it, because that meant it would take away their work hour flexibility.
No actual bartender or waitress wants a higher hourly wage because their wage should ideally only cover taxes on tips in America. They only make a wage from the restaurant if they made less than minimum wage for the shift. If they make wages then they won't make tips which vastly outweigh wages. Stop speaking for an industry you don't belong. Talk to your bartender instead. You will find they don't want you changing a thing.
My math teacher unfortunately had to take uber eats as a side hustle due to being criminally underpaid. He has told us some of his experiences driving late at night after a day of teaching. Alot of People have no idea that without the so called low pay workers society would end! I fix power lines, good look if we strike! Road sweepers, cleaners, cable workers, delivery drivers, factory workers, Maintenance workers, supermarket workers the list goes on! During Covid lockdown my 16 year old with his weekend job stocking shelves suddenly became incredibly important. When we realize our importance and stand together the impact will be far greater than anything this generation has ever seen.
I've had a delivery from deliveroo from people with dirty hands, smelling of drugs, coughing over the food and had stuff that has definitely eaten out of it. Never again! Some of these people bringing your food are some of the most unhygienic people going.
My food smelled like strong cigarettes before!!😫😢 after reading all this I’m definitely cooking more. 👩🏽🍳

Yeap. I worked with UberEats support, and the policies are fucked up. We can't do nothing but tell bad news to the delivery persons.
The horror stories of pizza delivery drivers should be enough to keep anyone from going up to a house of a stranger.
I always try to tip at least 20% every time, because I know the struggles of the food service industry and how shitty some situations and people are. Bless the food delivery drivers
I never thought about asking them if they need to come in and use the restroom. Here in America I can't afford these services anymore because of all the extra fees... it leaves me unable to tip enough so now I go pick up my food myself.
You could always do it with a friend if you feel unsafe and split the difference. My friend and I do it as a side hustle together because he has a license and can drive while I pick up and deliver the food from restaurants. Everybody has been pretty kind so far, even with more dangerous areas he accidentally had signed us up for. Plus, we can literally just do whatever we want as long as we are safe with the food and get it delivered in a timely manner, which is pretty rad
Sooooo dramatic. Yes I imagine there are issues that women face that men don't doing this type of work however now if it doesn't suit you go get another job! Plenty of people are hiring. Plus if the platform you were working for didn't work you should have tried to get on another one...

As a former pizza delivery driver I have been called names like sexy and hunk. I’ve had milfs take me in their homes to “pay” for their pizzas. I’ve been robbed and shot at multiple times and even been murdered twice.
No that’s all a joke. But I was offered some drugs by a stoner couple once….
😄
Bruuuuhhhh I've done doordash for a while now and just know that the area you cover is really indictive of how people react. If you're delivering in a sketchy neighborhood just be prepared for the sketchy circumstances. Other than that,I've been doing really well with the nicer areas since they'll also tip you well.
exactly
Adult!
I've been doing doordash for about 4 years in over a dozen major cities and I have no clue what this lady is talking about. It's all very straightforward: drive to store, pick up order, drive to house, drop off order. Most people are either nice, super nice, or you don't see them because it's no-contact. There are a few issues you run into but my God they're nothing like she's describing.
@@philosophicalharmonics3470 Especially in 2021 ,aren't most deliveries no-contact ,why is she interacting with these people
@@philosophicalharmonics3470 I think Vice paid this woman to come up with a bullshit story they wanted to tell.
I was a delivery driver for DoorDash for all of 2019, and I gotta say it wasn’t that bad. Yes hiccups but at the same time you’ll get free food sometimes and decent pay but the downside yes you have to consider car ware and tare and gas but that’s expected.
It's always better with a moped. You spend like $5 a week on gas. I know somebody in California who makes $1200 a week doing 5 days a week on a bicycle.
Work women any job is worse for them
Imagine having to use the bathroom so bad from working 9+ hours straight and every restaurant or business you pickup from tells you “no”, that’s it’s only for staff. I feel they’re treated like animals more than humans.
There's a lady from Haltom City that got shot dead on the job, way worse things.
Imagine being able to hit a button and instantly stop working whenever needed. Or imagine a 30 minute break button. Uber, door dash, GrubHub , and others all have these features if someone feels like torturing themselves for an extra 30m of availability then that's on them.
I've been a delivery driver for 15 years, I have never had a customer deny and bathroom request, not once
Amazon delivery drivers for 100$ we piss in bottles in our vans. If we’re lucky there’s a Porto potty I front of a house being built. Delivering food guess what you can do? Don’t accept another delivery and drive home to use the restroom. Guess what Amazon delivery drivers can’t do? Drive home to use the bathroom.
@@MaynardOwns no that I agree with but this is talking about food delivery isn't it?
I'm a female delivery driver and have never had experiences like this. What the hell is going on over there?
I feel so bad for her man. I’ve been delivering for instacart and more recently doordash since the pandemic hit in order to pay my rent and get by, and I’ve only had a handful of rude or unappreciative customers. I consider myself lucky I guess, maybe it has to do with location also, but this is so obviously just unacceptable behavior towards someone who’s only purpose in this case is being there to help you.
This is why I try to tip every deliveroo driver, and speak to all of them with gratitude and respect. The bit about the bathrooms is just brutal. 😞
I always wonder if they clean that mask after every person wears it.
Did Uber Eats for about 5 months. It isn't worth the lousy pay. I never went into any homes like this lady was saying. The only rude ass I encountered was some guy snatching the bag from my hand because I was late. Traffic and construction is a thing my guy.
Boycot Amazon, Deliveroo and Uber eats until they can give their workers basic rights and pay.

I can totally sympathise with this woman for her bad experiences but as a DoorDash driver in Australia, this has not been my experience at all. Pay is fine considering how straightforward the job is and in Australia tipping is not expected for wait staff so as a driver I don’t expect tips either. It is definitely not a stable stand alone income but as a side hustle where you can choose your own hours, it is pretty good. Also because of COVID, most people want contactless delivery so you don’t have to deal with customers much anyway. And the ones I have had direct contact with have been nice and friendly. I’m curious to other Australian deliver drivers if your experience has been positive or negative?
Hey Freya, I'm an Australian dasher and have done about 150 deliveries, all been with no issue from the customer side of things. Only problems with the restaurants themselves, maybe being too slow to prepare the orders...
I'm kinda late and I'm from the US and I've been dashing since 2021, and although I have encountered some nasty people here and there, the overwhelming majority have been respectful and nice. I guess it depends on location but I've personally never had any issues with people like that. most people I've brought orders to aren't crazy psychopaths, or at least I hope they aren't. some tip nothing, while others tip so much to the point where I believe I dont deserve all that money either.
As for the woman in this video I would say cases like these do happen but they're really not as common as you'd expect. I know my case could be an exception but I'm not alone either. most of us have decent experiences out there
I have a feeling this girl would complain about ANY job.
I was a server when I interviewed and was hired at my dream job as an airline pilot. Because of the experience waiting tables, I will always treat my servers/delivery people with kindness.
I ALWAY RESPECT THE ONE WHO BRINGS ME FOOD... ALWAYS !!!!
I doordash, I have never had a bad delivery. Im female, young and also in a bad area, if you want to feel safe get a weapon, attend a self defense class. Maybe choose a better company?
Or maybe learn to drive better, bring food in time and not screw up people's orders
In the UK, self defense isn’t allowed and a butter knife is a weapon.
@@dkrappenschitz9513 just bc you’re pissy at delivery drivers doesn’t justify you saying they deserve physical harm to come to them. That’s fucked up.
@@bluesira nobody does physical harm. This person probably didn't get a tip, or got a lower rating on the delivery app.
We're living in the era of false accusations
The fast food employees making 9 an hour are doing hard labor too. Because people kept ordering during the pandemic the government made fast food workers 'essential' WITHOUT a pay increase. So ALL the people ordering from home were part of the problem.
There was one time. It was only me and my manager Tasha at the restaurant. It was during Christmas. Yes we're open on Christmas during covid. It was so so so busy! It was literal nonstop work for only 2 people. So to have the drive-thru Non-Stop... And then also all the online ordering Non-Stop!! Completely demoralizing. All for only 9.50 an hour.
It was harder than warehouse work. Because you had to work fast like in a warehouse AND talk to customers unlike in a warehouse where you talk to co workers and managers.
In this covid era? You guys literally my hero...
Delivery drivers probably spread the virus to at least a few dozen million people.
The WORST idea, let's send someone around to many places in a row.
At my workplace for months delivery drivers couldn't even approach within 50 feet of the entrance, too risky. Drop the package at the sidewalk and go.
But, that's critical infrastructure for ya.

Yall talking about females vs. males lol I still get weird sexual advances so don't go there..
I worked as a beverage delivery driver in Germany, overall the working conditions were quite a bit better (as we were proper employees) but what the interviewee says about people not considering the labor that goes into these sorts of services holds true regardless. That was very noticeable when it came to customers showing any sort of appreciation either verbally or as a tip (not saying I expected tips to begin with). The more 'working class' a customer seemed, the friendlier they tended to be and on average they tipped better too. The more financially well off a customer seemed, the less they tended to treat me on an eye-to-eye level, they ordered more (which meant hauling more crates, usually up several flights of stairs, for me) and tipped less, if they tipped at all.

It isn’t like that at all for most delivery drivers. This girl is trippin.
@Jing Bot because there's a massive amount of gig economy people that work and if it was as bad as she explains it wouldn't be as thriving as it is You can also look at the like dislike ratio and consider that this video has only been up for 2 hours
@Jing Bot Because I deliver food also and I am part of different group pages with thousands of drivers that share their experiences daily.
@Jing Bot do you know about economics and the definition of a sunk cost. The maintenance of your vehicle is a sunk cost because they let you know up front prior to you accepting the job that the maintenance is always going to be on your own dime
@Jing Bot But yes I have quite literally had my wheel fall off of my car and I had to pay for it myself because I accepted the terms and conditions of being a driver
@Jing Bot So you are a woman. My sister delivers food also and has never had these type of issues. I realize there can be bad deliveries but this video makes it sound like it's the worst job ever. We all go through it, men and women. No need to single out a gender.
I survived working for Postmates in San Francisco on a bicycle for over 1 year before they Really started shafting their "Contractors" ( Employees). Every moment was one where I could have died, been killed or beaten & robbed. The best I could hope for was that half of the the customers would be generous and leave some tip and I was lightning fast and would "crush" maaany jobs 10 - 12 hours a day straight.
Not everyone survived.
I'm done with these delivery apps. Handful of people getting so rich off these underpaid drivers, restaurants taking cuts, and even users paying too much. All around bad.
Another piece of the Dark Side is. These companies can also deactive your account, even if you canceled too many of your orders, and you've been waiting there for over an half an hour at the pickup.
I've had the same experience with neighbours over my life. They never abused my partner being a man but wait to get me on my own and let rip on me. Every time it in rages him. He'll approach them if it's really bad, the rest of the time they get away with it. Being a woman makes you a target for all-sorts. Nevermind folk coming on to you aggressively, I never get in a taxi alone in Nottingham were I live, unless I have a woman driver. Most drivers are creepy and ask things like are you married? Do you want to get married? And other creepy stuff. No wonder the women here are rock hard.
I've done every gig company and have had some interesting stories particularly doing uber. Some of what she says i can definitely agree with. The ability they have to shave hundreds every week from your pay is just a part of the job. I would have to complain about every single job cause either they short you on miles or shave your tips. At night when drive thrus are long, most restaurants won't hand deliver your food out front, you have to sit in the drive thru. Sometimes the drive thru will be full of delivery pick ups but at the front of the line is an SUV full of drunk kids who take 30 minutes ţ o get thru while the rest of the line are ready orders getting cold and losing money. Finally when you've reached the window your phone buzzes, there's a message, degrading as all hell lecturing you that they now have to go to sleep that they gave you ample time and failed to do the most basic task. Then they'll say i see that you messaged me that the line was long and in bold letters with exclamation points, THAT WAS 45 MINUTES AGO!!!, can you be any more incompetent, I don't appreciate you stringing me along with lies, the drive thru never takes this long. Hopefully you get your priorities together, people want workers who finish jobs not those who provide excuses. You failed. Better luck next time. Then your gig company pays 50% so you just made $3.50 for 1 hours work. That's minimum wage in the 70s
In our country they prioritizd delivery foods more than walkins hence no cold food
