Why eBooks Are More Expensive Than Paperbacks

  • How you ever wondered why some eBooks are more expensive than paperbacks despite being cheaper to make?
Well it’s because eBooks are sold using a completely different pricing system.
When retailers like Barnes & Noble sell a paperback, they’re allowed to set the price. Which usually results in cheaper books since each store is competing for customers. Also, shelf space is limited. So it’s common for stores to lower prices on older books so they can make room for new releases. Either way, publishers like Simon & Schuster have no control over these price changes. And they don’t like that. Because if a store charge less, the publisher makes less.

I collect manga and I would love a download code for a digital copy, considering the paper quality is usually little better than newsprint and these books won’t last forever no matter how well you take care of them.
If the books have to be sealed to protect the code though, that would worsen the experience as I like to flip through the book before buying it. Lots of people would probably open the wrapping to steal the code as well, so even though I like the idea In theory, I have no idea how it should actually be implemented in a way that benefits the customer. In Germany there is something called "Buchpreisbindung" (fixed book price) that allows publishers to determine the price of a book at which it is to be sold to the public. That means german books have the exact same price no matter who sells them. The idea behind it is to protect smaller independent bookstores and to guarantee a certain standard for books (by protecting literature from the market since it's only driven by money). And when you look at the US and see how Amazon is slowly killing local bookstores you start to think that there might be a point to this system...

    • @gerardsotxoa
      @gerardsotxoa 3 місяці тому +2

It's the same with retailing everywhere.
In Mexico doesn't exist such law but big publishers have a "fixed" minimum pricetag which every bookstore follows for some months. After some months the bookstores are free to break the prices, the time varies depending of the expected sales.
If a small bookstore goes funky with the price the publisher just won't deliver their next big title
I'm sure is the same way in USA, if a shitty autobiography isn't selling in the first month, why not trim the price???
In Spain i think they have the same european bourocratic nonesense tho, some new titles are earlier available in Spain and we have to wait like 6 or 9 months because Mexico or Argentina can break the pricetags in Spain.

Just in the first minute of this video, a lot is wrong. Book stores buy copies of physical books at a discounted rate of about 40% - 60%. So if the MSRP for a book is $20, a publisher like Simon & Schuster will sell to a store like Barnes & Noble for let’s say $12 (40%), though it may have cost Simon & Schuster no more than $4 to print that book. It’s fine though because book stores buy in bulk and a discount of that size is fair. Anyway, now it’s only Barnes & Noble’s responsibility to make profit for their business. Simon & Schuster already got their money when Barnes & Noble bought in bulk. If there’s more demand for a book, then Barnes & Noble will keep ordering copies of that book and the publisher as well as the store will keep profiting. Also, stores are usually not allowed to sell above the MSRP (manufacturer suggested retail price), so if it’s $20, Barnes & Noble can’t sell the book for more than that.
Publishers charge more for digital copies compared to physical copies for 3 reasons: 1. Accessibility - the book can be accessed of various devices, even more so if the DRM protection for the book is cracked. 2. To protect physical copy sales - something that the music industry couldn’t do and the publishing industry doesn’t want to suffer the same fate. 3. To not piss off brick and mortar stores - if publishers sell digital books less or even at the same price, that would upset physical retailers.
This isn’t just how it operates with book publishing, but also video game publishing. Basically, publishers get their money in advance and like to control prices while not upsetting their retail partners.

      @@DavidKen878 I am sorry. I wasn't technical enough.
      1. Amazon didn't want to raise prices and wanted to make the market competitive. Apple of course wouldn't take a single step in a direction which won't make them a quick buck. Hence, they provided a platform to publishers so that they can raise prices, and Apple can end Amazon's monopoly and earn commission without having to compete. They had to pay a penalty but the shitty pricing model continues till date.
Such publishers didn't fight the full legal battle and backed off. Apple continued to assert they didn't do anything wrong. But eventually they were declared wrong by the justice system. Please do read the 2013 article from The Guardian reg the same.
      2. Apple did away with chargers and are selling them separately just to make more money. They were the first major company to introduce this. I know its their business strategy and they can do whatever they want. But no company other than Apple has the audacity to make such a move. Apple decides the way consumer market moves forward. Whatever they do will eventually get copied by companies like Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo. Eventually Samsung copied the same next year onwards.
Please don't tell me you buy the environment-friendly argument of Apple. Eventually,
      3. Insanely high prices for RAM and Storage upgrades in iPhones, iPads and Macs. They showed other companies, people are foolish enough and will still be a loyal customer regardless of charging 300% more for the same thing.
      4. The MFi program. They certainly didn't inspire other companies with this, but they stuck to lightning port to earn as much as possible until EU forced them to adopt USB C. Well, the end user ends up paying upto 25% more just because Apple charges money for certification of flash drives, cables and other lightning accessories.
I hope I was technical enough in putting forward my argument which is not solely based on feelings but rather rests upon concrete facts 🙂

Stores buy things in bulk for 20-30% under MSRP from the producer - in this case publisher, and the difference between the price they are paying and MSRP is their profit. If they put something on sale they just decrease their profit but in most of the cases they don’t sell stuff under the price they buy it from the producer / publisher. And even if, they bought it from the producer/ publisher for a fixed price, it’s the shops loss and not of the producer / publisher.

The Agency model it's pretty common in most of the world, since it's a way to avoid small bookstores from being displaced by the big retailers: since the price is the same everywhere, small bookstores can compete having better recommendations, being more local, better librarians, a more niche catalogue, etc. If the retailer could set the price, the bigger ones can sell way cheaper and eat the difference so as to bring all the costumers to them, until the smaller bookstores perishes. THEN the retailers can up the price any ampunt they want. And this is exactly what is happening with Amazon, actually.

You are right, and this should be also reflected in a difference in price... If you don't actually "buy" an ebook (and can't re-sell it or lend it, or whatever) it should have a *much lower* price than the printed version (especially as there are no paper, printing process, transport, ecc. involved)... But more and more often I see eBooks that have practically the same price of the paperback, the difference is so small that doesn't compensate for the limits of eBook. When it happens, I buy the paperback..

In Germany thats a total different Story. We have a law called „Buchpreisbindung“ („Fixed book price law“). This means that the publisher sets the price and every store (online or local) must follow. Which means the book costs the same on Amazon, big bookstore chains, or some little family old bookstore. I personally like this law since I don’t have to spend time trying to find the best deal, since it’s the same price everywhere anyways.
That’s why in Germany ebooks tend to be a little cheaper than physical ones. For example paperback costs 12€, ebook 9€ However It often takes way longer for an ebook to release over the physical one. Like often ebooks only get released 2 years after their original physical release.
Personally I prefer „normal“ books. I am not a big fan of ebooks

While the apple ebooks might be priced higher than a physical book, this difference is swapped when you consider overseas shipping. I live in a country with very understocked bookstores, where the range is usually limited to popular best-selling titles. Buying physical books here is a very expensive hobby, so it’s definitely more cost-effective to go digital. Plus, I usually buy kindle books, so I save even more.

  • @jessemorales146

In my simplistic mind, when it comes to digital prices being higher normally, I just think, I’m too lazy to go to the store and buy a book, movie, or video game. And if I actually make the effort to go buy it, I have to make the effort to get up from couch, and physically grab the book, video game, or movie. And maybe have to look for it if I misplaced it. And in the case of the movie or video game, make sure the console or blu ray is plugged in cuz I only have 4 HDMIs. So yeah, they can price the digital options higher than the physical media cuz of my laziness and convenience. The way I see it now, physical media and physical books are more just for aesthetics and decor, and actually use the digital media instead. My 4K Blu-ray’s and steelbooks and books look beautiful in my shelves, never touch them though, just use the digital versions for them both. And physical video games really are just a straight inconvenience now.

What is most important to not let them put in your head that they discontinue selling physical media because of ENVIROMENT PROTECTION XDDD they do it only to kill retail and second hand market. If you can have something in your hand, it belongs to you and always will and the best is if you can't afford a new movie, game or book, you can always buy something second hand cheaper 🙂 It's not only about media market, same goes with electric garbage, forcing people to change their cars and buy new ones etc. They don't give a f..k about any enviroment, they only care about money they can make on dumb (ideologized) people

I am going to believe what you have to say and not debate any of the distortions caused by external intervention and further assume Apple as the sole supplier of e-books. The answer to the question at hand is that e-books are more expensive because they produce a greater value. They would otherwise not sell and a compromise on revenue would be made, hurting both publishers and retailers. If I can buy the paperback for $6 less yet choose to buy the e-book, it was obviously not without reason. Assuming I did not know it was $6 less, I still chose to buy it for the listed price $6 more because it of a greater value-preposition to me than the money I gave up. If I want a particular book and it is too expensive, I will look for substitutes; pirate it, go to the library, buy it on the secondary market, buy some other book/attend some lecture, read summaries and discussions on the book, buy a movie ticket or treat myself to a good meal. Once again, this hurts both publishers and retailers.
