When in 1888 the Concertgebouw was build, the “hall of fame” (eregalerij) contained names like, Bach, Schubert, Mendelssohn and… Louis Spohr! Famous enough those days to have his name written in stone. In 1853 however, at the age of 69, Spohr did not have a recent “success” on his name. His music was out shined by that of Liszt, Wagner and the new kid on the block Johannes Brahms. Maybe that was the reason his Septet, op 147, is far more chromatic than his earlier works. Anyway, the combination of old fashioned Biedermeier style with newer harmonic succes ensured Spohr his last real “hit” before his retirement in 1856.
These days, the work is rarely performed, therefore it was a good idea of the Concertgebouw Chamber Ensemble (you guess it, members of the Concertgebouw orchestra plus Dutch pianist Hans Eijsackers) to perform this live in the small hall of the Concertgebouw during the 2015 summer season. Fine performance, taped from the Dutch radio. Hope you will enjoy it as much as I did!

Wonderful! Although his last success, to be exact, was his songs for baritone, violin and piano Op.154. Really nice recording! Thank you!
