Louis Spohr was a wellknown composer in his time, his violin- and clarinet concertos were particularly important. Now a days he deserves more attention so thanks for uploading!
Hoelscher does an amazing job on this fiendishly difficult concerto. Listen to the fingered octaves, perfectly in tune. Spohr gets little credit for his orchestration. Interesting and appropriate for the violin solo. Unusual combinations for the common practice period. I feel I must defend Spohr, who as a conservative composer is often wrongly accused of being a Beethoven or Mendelssohn imitator. Not so! His melodic inventions and harmonic modulations, not to mention melodic ideas all individual and tasteful. The violin writing is lovely and idiomatic.Better fiddle writing has never been done by anybody. Charming, never dull or pedantic. Too difficult for many violinists to spend the hours and days of practice required to perfect this music, only be told :"Spohr ?" "Who cares?"" Let's hear Mendelssohn or Bruch for the thousandth time, nobody has ever heard of Spohr."
Another likeable concerto by Spohr new to me. The jaunty, irregular first-movement theme and the lyrical 'larghetto' theme are especially attractive, and the 'rondo' with its' soft ending is distinctive. Hoelscher's playing sometimes disappoints, but he conveys the spirit of the music well. Spohr was no Mozart, but was still a talented and innovative composer.
