  • Born in Bulgaria in 1990, Michael studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Louise Hopkins, winning the Gold Medal in 2014.
Over the last two years Michael has appeared as soloist with the Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, Bournemouth Symphony, City of London Sinfonia, English Chamber and the Barbican Young Orchestras (conducted by Edward Gardner) performing concertos by Dvorak, Elgar, Haydn, Walton and Shostakovich.
Nominated by the Barbican as ECHO Rising Star, Michael gave recitals at eighteen major concert halls throughout Europe including the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Cité de la Musique Paris, Musikverein Vienna, Budapest Palace of Arts, Kölner Philharmonie and the Laeiszhalle Hamburg.
Recent concert highlights also include his debut at Carnegie’s Weill Hall, and recitals at the Los Angeles Cello, Bath International, Plush and Peasmarsh Festivals. This season Michael returns to Wigmore Hall, attends open chamber music at IMS Prussia Cove and gives recitals throughout Europe.
He plays on a Vuillaume cello (c.1845)
"….he has his audience hooked from the very first note….it's all there: a meltingly warm, smooth tone, an easy virtuosity, a captivating musical temperament and a direct eloquence, as if speaking through his instrument."
Die Welte / Hamburg Kleinen Saal der Laeszhalle / January 2015
"Michael Petrov plays with the bravura and calm assurance of a long-established maestro. At his recent performance of Shostakovich’s 1st Cello Concerto at the Barbican Petrov dominated the orchestra effortlessly."
The Daily Telegraph / New Music - Ivan Hewett / June 2014
