Thank you so much!!! I write The Bow Bully Blog for Pyramyd AIR and your videos are a huge help for me to find things to write about and give good, sound direction to the readers! Thank you! Huge help!!
I started using the Easy Vanes and they were the best ones I have tried so far. Easiest to fletch, cheap, and super light. 4 fletch weighs only like 16-20 grains
John you saved me so many headaches with these videos thank you for doing what you do , also I had no idea nock fit was even a thing until watching your videos that alone shrunk my groups so thank you
The max vane in a 4-fletch at about 3 degrees right offset is what I have been shooting the last several years. Best results I have obtained so far. I was using the FOB for several years, but got tired of them being so easily snagged and getting stripped from my arrow - whether in flight and hitting a leaf or two, or in my quiver and walking through the woods! The last straw is when I lost some FOBs going through brush while walking to a hunt spot in the upper peninsula of Michigan the first morning of a bow hunt. I had spares, but it was still annoying. Been going with the max vane 4-fletch ever since. Very satisfied for now.
Never tried the FOB, but if you liked the concept, I recommend trying Zinger fletches. I still use traditional vanes every now and then for fun and practice arrows, but I always go back to Zingers.
I actually tried that process and so called “tested” about 6 or 8 different vanes and configurations. One vane, Heat vanes, absolutely did not work for me but I cannot tell you why. Also tried 4 fletch but could not see a difference between 3 or 4. So I guess the reality is “ I’m just not a good enough archer” to be able to discern the minute differences between these products. I have 2 bows, different poundages etc, and I run different vanes for each because I can, and I can also pick my own color combination etc etc. also, I can pretty much hit what I’m aiming at from zero to a 100 yds with a decent group. But the reality is, I could probably do the same with off the shelf vanes.
3 v 4 fletch really depends on the vane itself, your arrow stability (difference between center of gravity and center of pressure), and how much the arrow kicks in flight. More vane material pushes center of pressure back. Either with bigger vanes or with more vanes, it's the same.
It depends for me on what I’m doing or 3 or 4 for hunting it 100% depends on head I’m shooting for flight, but for target with glue in tips I shoot 4 fletch to be more forgiving it gives me slightly smaller groups but I tested this over a full 3D season in practice and didn’t shoot 4 until the last tournament of the year of the ASA’s until I had a ton of info backing up the 4
I went with a 3 fletch with no wrap to decrease overall weight for TAC to increase speed and range, and to add a little more FOC. I also went with 2 degree helical for less drag at longer distances. Not sure if it makes much difference but it's fun to experiment. Is that a new shirt design?
Four Fletch on the max 23s has been the best all rounder for my set up. Which is why it's annoying you only sell 40 packs.....can't Fletch a full dozen lol Still won't get em anywhere else though 🤘🤘🤘
Great video man. Thanks for the info. Ive shot 3, 4, and 6 fletch. Straight and helical. When it comes to steering a single bevel fixed blade broad head i think im back to 3 fletch helical. When i shot 4 helical i got parachuting at distance. I also want to keep a higher FOC which is why im dropping back to 3 instead of decreasing the helical on 4. When you come off target and go to your hunting arrows do you have more weight up front or just the 100gn head? I figure since you are a big target guy you probably stick to 100.
Great video John looking at your box of test arrows an vanes and F.O.C. Looks like mine.lol. I have 7 different bows and have different setup for most of them.
What's the weight of the arrow you used for hunting (overall weight and broadhead weight)? Would you agree more weight upfront doesn't require that big a fletching? I'm trying to reduce my fletching to still be able to stir a fixed blade with 650grain, 300ish at the front. Cheers!
Excellent John!!!! Vanes are so important most let it slip by there setups. I'm playing with different configurations to see what my bow likes and dislikes?????
Great info. Any input as to vane material stiffness? If shooting indoor target with a low draw length and weight, and shorter distances. I took that a large vane would steer the arrow quicker.
I am somewhat new to archery and have heard from other channels that clocking the spin of your arrow before you fletch is important to insure proper helix direction. Is this a useless step that someone added to look smart or is it actually a crucial step?
I’m starting to think that for the most part …. It really doesn’t matter at all. I believe you can take 2 different vanes. One 2”( small ) for target. One bigger for steering a broadhead. They are all the same as far as functionality and virtually no human can shoot better than any of yhem steer. Pick what you like the looks of and go with it because if it shoots good for you….. there is no other vane that will shoot better than what you already have
Thanks for another awesome video! When tuning my bow i noticed it likes to throw a bare shaft counter clockwise, but my arrows are fletched to spin clockwise so at some point the spin direction is reversed when i shoot. Should this be a consideration when fletching arrows or stringing your bow? What you said about the direction you screw a broad head in makes sense. Thanks! -Luke
Just purchased the Pro Max vanes and im using them with the preset jig you sell for a 4 fletch job. is this an ok set up for hunting or should i get bigger/longer vanes?
Years of experience and acquired knowledge people for real. So all you smart assess with negative comments- what’s your records history in world class competition???
Non-expert reply: Yes, but how much depends on many variables including all the things mentioned in the video. Air flowing over a wavy surface acts differently than on a smooth surface and this would necessarily cause a change in stability and rotation, but I don’t know how much of a change this would cause for consistency between the arrows in your quiver. Try shooting/testing an old arrow with the worn/wavy vanes followed by a set of same vanes but in new condition and see what kind of results you get- 30+ yards should show any major differences. Good luck.
Do you remember when you could hit the bull's-eye with straight fletch arrows? Decades ago, back before helical or even offset fletch was known? Me too. Helical fletch is bunk or at the most it hides a poorly tuned bow or archer.
What proof do you actually have that the arrow slows down? Using a Labradar chronograph i have seen no difference in velocity atleast out 60 yards. I honestly think its a old school comment that no one is actually physically testing.
You must have failed high school physics. Even bullets slow down the moment they leave a barrel. And gravity also acts on anything moving through the air. How did you test for velocity at 60 yards? And, the faster an object moves, the faster it slows down.
I don't think you understand how math works. Given similar designs, four 3 inch fletches are not the same surface area as three 4 inch fletches. That's like saying two 8 inch pizzas are better than one 15 inch pizza.
You’re a hero in this industry! I always find myself coming to your videos for guidance

This video came just in time for me to convince a friend to try a 4 fletch to tighten up his fixedblade groups.
Thank you mr. Dudly!

That PM 2.0 on the new Sonic arrows would be perfect for TAC
Great breakdown.
Good info nicely presented. Thanks
I would like you to be more specific when you say long range. Is that more than 60 yards ?
What is your nocking point orientation for your four fletch configuration? Thank you 👍
Great info. Any input as to vane material stiffness? If shooting indoor target with a low draw length and weight, and shorter distances. I took that a large vane would steer the arrow quicker.
Stiffness relates to speed. Faster arrow, stiffer vane.

When you say down range …. What distance? As for helical and losing accuracy….40?, 50,…100?. Would 20 be good to go

Would it be more important to have more surface area of veins than the broad head or have equal surface area but taller veins than the broad head?
How do you determine the correct arrow length for fixed broad heads?
Sure thing Clark Griswold
Great info
@ 12:51 is why I now use arrows cut to my draw length
I understand that decel would cause a drop, but how does it cause inaccuracy?
I'm new to archery and haven't been able to get a concise answer on this: do wavey vanes affect accuracy?
Non-expert reply: Yes, but how much depends on many variables including all the things mentioned in the video. How do I contact you about building a bow for indoor archery? I want to have one built end of august beginning of September!
John, is there any advantage of moving your vane down the shaft versus a vane that is more toward the nock??????
You want it as far back as possible and achieve clearance at full draw. Make sure the fletchings don't contact your face.
Do you offset a 4 fletch of fletch them straight ?
Do you remember when you could hit the bull's-eye with straight fletch arrows? Decades ago, back before helical or even offset fletch was known? Me too. Helical fletch is bunk or at the most it hides a poorly tuned bow or archer.
steer ability? What does he mean?
you hunt with the max or max stealth?
With high foc your arrow doesn’t lose most momentum throughout its entire flight
What size is the green vane
👍😄😁 DO you like your career? I think I understand.
Have you compared vanes vs feathers
Both are vanes. One vane is made of plastic, the other is made with feathers. "Vane" is the function.
How far back or close to the nock is the "best" to fletch?
As far back as you can without touching face
Thanks dud!
You bet!
