Absolutely critical. As the hired expert on the job if you begin to panic all confidence is forever lost. No matter how big/small the job or how big/small the accident if you maintain calm and provide a clear path of recovery you can not only save a project but inspire greater confidence in your client. Obviously this does not apply to repeated mistakes or egregious failure.

Been there and done that. For over 35 yrs pro. Never send tour helper to clean up a spill. Let them assist a journeyman. Learn from experience, and move on .. calmly. Never put water on a chemical fire to extinguish, and never add water to paint to clean up. It spreads like wildfire. And salvage as much food product as you can
It can be strained, and drill mixed back to life.

You saved me from a disaster… paint can fell from shelf on garage floor.. I used gloves, cardboard, and paper towels dry first, then wet them to grab residue- I stayed in the local spots with a trash bag to pick it up. I used an abrasive to get out what was left and was thrilled at the results. Calmness is key.. sang my way through it while my dog hollers the whole time because I had to lock him up. Took me over an hour

I spilt 15 or so 4 liter pails driving through a busy intersection in a small town.
The tailgate opened up upon accelerating when the light changed.
Only in a small town could the fix have happened like it did. I blocked the paint marsh and called the fire department!
They were totally helpful, and did there best to get me out of a very messy, possibly costly, mega embarrassing situation.
It's been 30 years but, thanks for the help Prince Rupert F.D.

Awesome job. Feeling your pain. I rode a ladder down an exterior wall over a driveway. Of course the bucket of paint went all over the driveway. When I hit the ground Adrenaline kicked in and I immediately jumped up and was able to clean it up. And then I shook like crazy over the fall. Accidents happen.

Keeping calm is the key. I had a fall at a home and luckily I did not get hurt. However, I got Benjamin Moore Advance all over a hardwood floor. My customer was freaking out cause she thought I was hurt. She was shocked at how calm I was.😊 I took a bunch of towels, wet them with water, and laid them down everywhere there was paint spilled. I removed each towel one by one in a wiping fashion and cleaned it all up. They were impressed and happy. I’m doing another job for them next week. 😊

Good job Chris. I wanted to point out something you didnt do or talk about which is a HUGE tip for anyone who doesnt know. You did NOT use thinner. Thinner of any kind on asphalt is a massive no-no. It will leave a spot that looks like all the oil just leaked out of your truck. I was subbing many yrs ago and watched the boss clean all his equipment right in the middle of the home owners asphalt driveway, got thinner everywhere. Owner asked him about the massive spots all over before we left and boss said it will evaporate and you’ll never see it. Home owner called the next summer and boss payed $350 to sealcoat his entire driveway to cover it up, again, a year later.
Home owner sold house since then and believe it or not I just repainted the same house 10+ yrs later last summer for new owners. I could still see every spot but very faded. Since that day i just take everything oil home to clean.

I remember one job I had it seemed like every possible thing went wrong. It was one of my first jobs spraying stucco. I had a time crunch because it was November in East Idaho and it was the last couple days being good enough weather to paint. Right when I started my sprayer stopped working. I ended up buying a used one and immediately that one stopped working as well! I ended up renting one from Sherwin Williams and that one wouldn't prime... I was super stressed out, I decided to roll it which didn't end up taking long. When I had to get one more gallon of paint on my way to my vehicle I dropped it and paint got EVERYWHERE. I'm pretty sure one of my buckets broke and poured out a bunch of paint during that job as well... What a nightmare.
Anyway I appreciate all your videos, I find myself looking up different techniques from you often and you have helped me grow my business and be a better painter.

It’s honest to show your disaster, glad you fix it👍
Recently I had some dust plaster on a black tiling (crocodil relief). Client tried to fix it with water but worsen the problem. the solution was to brush with white vinegar, then it worked like a charm 👌

  • @grimreefer213
    @grimreefer213 3 роки тому +1

Yeah not panicking is important not only to put the client at ease but also for safety. I once spilled white paint on a black shingled roof, you don’t want to be freaking out going up and down ladders and on a roof, you have a few minutes to work with even in summer so just stay cool. There isn’t a whole lot of mistakes that can’t be fixed, I just got some buckets of clean water a wire brush and some rags and washed it down the roof and it came right out. Painting is a unique business where we’re working with liquids that dye things permanently and are hard to get off, there can be mistakes at any time if you’re not careful and it’s bound to happen at some point in your career. The lost time having to clean it up is a bummer but being able to correct and learn from your mistakes is a valuable skill!

I was doing a nursery and after 25 years of painting I spilled my first gallon of paint. I couldn’t save the paint as it was in carpet with dog hair. But took your advice and got all access off carpet and then soaked it up with dry rags. Then got a Bissell shampooer spot cleaner and was able to pull the paint with water running through it. I took a lot of your advice and did not panic and was able to clean the mess up and you couldn’t even tell I was there very thankful

Worst thing to do with a paint spill is panic! I'm a painter by trade with 22yrs experience here in Western Australia and have had an employee of mine spill a litre of paint on old carpet from their paint pot at a commercial property I was doing a repaint on same thing applies... Don't panic..Contain the spill... Scoop up as much as possible.. In my case I used a dust pan and filler blades as a scoop into another bucket. Then used soapy water that was available in the laundry area (daycare centre) soaked and sponged up the remainder with sponges and paper towels cycling new fresh water buckets after another... Couldn't even see there was ever a spill when I was done 👌

I had an O-ring break on the pump part of my sprayer. I'm up on a ladder and I hear the sprayer whining like it's the bottom of a bucket, and I think "no way I just started a new 5 gallon bucket!" . I look down in horror and see that the ruptured seal is spraying the next house over with dark gray paint.
I raced down the ladder like a fireman with a kid in my arms, and quickly shut off the pump. Fortunately that neighbor's house had a hose with a spray attachment on it which I used to wash away the splattered paint. Since that day I always keep a spray nozzle in my toolbox just in case.

Great Job really nice cleanup. I was painting my sons room several years ago with a wagner power roller and the hose blew I scrubbed the wood floor for several hours but got all the paint off. Which was good considering I just put the floor in 3 days prior. Then my son decided he didnt want a poster on his wall anymore and the paint was faded everywhere except where the poster was so I had no choice but to paint it after putting in the new flooring. Luckily it worked out but had me worried for a while. Thanks for all the tips and advice.

My dad had my cousin working for him we were painting the outside of a building over asphalt and he kept sliding the bucket with his foot, I told him "hey pick that bucket up and move it so it doesn't accidentally tip over on this newly refinished asphalt" 5 minutes later and what else would happen besides him not listening and 1/2 a gallon of paint on the asphalt. Sometimes it's stupidity some times it's unforeseen

What a cool boss! I've never seen a boss yet to clean up a mess they would usually get an apprentice to do that. Even using ur hands , not my method but kudos to you Chris! You're an awesome boss , if I was living In USA I would be honoured to work with you! Personally what I find works for small spillages is to carry with me is a small bucket with some dry sand or garden soil.firstly clean up excess, then apply soil or sand , this will soak up residue, gather up that, then rinse with water, job done:-)

My mother and I painted our shed recently. Could not afford to hire anyone and did not have anyone to really help. We worked with an oil based primer and had a bunch of dirty disposable gloves, rollers, paper towels with paint. Is it okay to throw these items in the trash? We ended up soaking them in water in a trash bag to be cautious and will take them to the watse facility asap. But what is ok to throw out and what's not? Thanks for any knowledge and advice you can give to this newbie painter and DIY'er. 🙂

Good job Brother. Never let'em see ya sweat! Cleaning up the bulk to start was a life-saver. Now, wet one of those towels after the bulk clean up, and throw it over the spill to keep it wet. If location and logistics allow, go grab the wet vac, wet the spill and keep on sucking. Beats all of that scrubbing. Also, where was the person who spilled this in the first place, and why were they not doing all of that work LOL. As a side note, from the looks of that "crackle" they call a parking lot, you didn't do any more damage than they need to fix anyways.

Im here because i just spilled half a gallon of white paint on my new black top driveway. I did everything wrong. I just moved in and neighbors were out so I panicked and grabbed the hose and started trying to saturate the area which of course made everything 10 times worse. I also sprayed the water down the sewer drain which was a few feet away. I just can't believe it happened and I'm still beating myself up how I'm not handy and I just make things worse to make things worse when I try to do things on my own🥺 Edit: Thank you so much for posting a disaster. Like a little paint is going to do any environmental harm going into a river, but I get the whole being a responsible business in today's environment, when I was a kid I practically bathed in paint, luckily my dad always made me wear a n95 when I was spraying. I had brand new lines pop a pinhole leak on interior jobs, you just have to deal with it as best as you can and never let the customer know you're on the edge.

Hello, oh no, Good job cleaning up!
I have some questions about using a sprayer. Specifically the Wagner Control Pro 130 Electric Stationary Airless Paint Sprayer.
I have rolled two bedrooms but that was time consuming. Using a 9” roller. And cut ins myself as well. That was a pain. 2 coats each process.
So I want to make the process easier and use a sprayer along with attaching the 24” extension.
Our walls were hand troweled when we had our house built 15 years ago. Walls still have original paint. Now time re-paint.
Anyone on here can answer I would appreciate it.
    My Questions:
With the walls being hand troweled will I have to back roll after I spray? The texture isn’t heavy at all. I believe the sprayer comes with 515 tip.
Or should I roll the paint with 18” roller?
Which method do u recommend for better application?
    Thank you

All you need is DIRT, WATER, and a WIRE BRUSH. Dirt will absorb the pigment, its fantastic, works with big and small spills. Even if I get a drip while cutting in outside I will just grab a pinch of dirt and rub it into the drip. Boom gone.
Funny story, back when I was a new apprentice I had a caulking gun and a deuce full of paint I was brushing out of, and I had climbed up onto this roof to paint some fascias. While on the roof I grabbed the caulking gun with my other hand and the hook at the end of the caulking gun caught my paint bucket and pulled it right out of my hand and poured the paint all over the roof, my leg, and my boot. I called for my coworker to bring me a hose and a brush then started trying to clean it up but everywhere I stepped I left a big swiss coffee colored boot print. I ended up taking off my boot and throwing it off the roof then continued frantically scrubbing this roof tile. The icing on the cake was the home was on a busy street so as all these cars drove by they saw this crazy looking kid with a missing boot trying to scrub a roof with a brush and a hose. HAh.
Started writing this as I started the video, now I see that it looks like Chris knows the dirt trick too.

I almost instinctively did this, even down to the wire brush; however, I did so not quite as elegantly :/

Great Video! Most people would be there for hours with a water hose.

I have painted over 300 exteriors and whenever there is a paint spill I scoop as much as possible. I then contain and soak up the rest with dirt. scoop the paint filled dirt up. I then hit it with dirt again and move it back and forth with the dirt acting as an abrasive. Then I sweep up the remaining dirt/paint. By this time it is usually clean and only at this time will I hose off the dirt residue that remains if needed. Often I have found it needs no water. Water is not the answer and those who turn the hose on a paint spill make matters 100 times worse. Think of it like this., paint does not stick to a dusty or dirty surface so you are contaminating the area to make sure it has no chance just as how you prep and clean and pressure was a surface to make sure you will promote adhesion. You do the opposite.
I have done this whenever myself or another person has spilled paint. I have cleaned up paint in underground parking structures while others rush to get the hose. By the time they return it is all cleaned up. If it has seaped into the concrete you may need to use a wire brush in the end but more than likely not. This is by far the easiest and quickest way to clean up paint. One guy spilled paint on a brand new $65k roof. Went into panic mode and the solution was dirt. Dirt saves the day.

so a much better approach would be to use wide putty knifes, scrape all the paint into a bucket or a sheetrock tray, keep it all in 1 area, let it dry completely and then paint on citris strip and then powerwash it clean. it worked for me

I've had that happen too, except inside a customers home. They had removed the old carpet but left the tack strips down.... Thought my hose was caught on a corner, so I tried tugging it free. T'was a bad idea, it was no corner... it was stuck on a tack strip, until I tugged it free. I'm sure you can imagine the aftermath.

Shouldve poured water on the spot after cleaning up the excess and use a push broom to brush the spot fast then used rags or towels to clean up or sponge up .. Good job tho but I usually keep the broom on the truck just in case. Just a helpful tip

Put a line of spray glue then put five feet of 48” masking plastic from masker with 1.5 making sure tape was stuck down to glue then pushed the 5 gallons of paint onto plastic with 12” blade. Them basically did what he did . I fogged some flat black rattle can lol 😂. Ramming sheet rock with scissors lift is the F up gets me puckering .
