watching this man has exponentially increased my painting skills as a contractor over the last cpl years and the tools he shows have made my job easier when I do paint . thanks Chris!
homeowner and not a professional here. I am assuming that you are using the same paint on the metal as everywhere else. I was told that a different paint was needed for the drip edge than the rest of the trim. I believe in a round about way you covered this, but I was told that regular latex will peel.... I enjoy and learn alot from your videos.
I really liked this. The small tips like bagging the roller, tossing when done, and brush buddy for ladder climbing. Being new to diy I need to know these details. It helps to watch how you confidently work from a ladder, too, since that's still scary for me. Thanks
Great video. What is the most fade-resistant paint for painting outdoor metal? I need to re-paint our trampoline frame. It is a dark hunter green. Several years ago, I painted it with Rustoleum spray paint. It faded within a few months. I read that water based paint is best. I'm planning to use a roller this time.
Many painters spray over the fascia, metal flashing and the edge of the roof shingles. I did this when I first started out and never had any complaint. It's the fastest method but it's not good practice. I didn't know any better back then.
Ever use the Picasso angled oval cut brush? Things are amazing for about a year. The Purdy pro extras are hard to beat as far as longevity. I just really like oval brushes and don’t know why they are not more popular. Never found one that lasted as long as my pro extras though.
Chris as always, thank you so much you are the best. 🔥🔥🔥maybe someone will need my life hack. I use knee pads when working on the stairs, it’s very convenient to rest your knee on the step and your knees don’t hurt after that and it’s easier to keep your balance.
I have had the Original Leaf Guard brand of gutters on my home for 23 yrs. Very happy with the function of the gutters. But after hand cleaning the mold and stains from the gutters, I noticed that the original colored finish (almond) has sustained sun bleach damage down to bare aluminum. What type/ brand of paint should I use to restore the rain cohesive properties of the curved top portion? Thanks Tim Smith
Do you caulk the gap between metal drip edge and fascia? I hate how in some spots there’s a gap and other spots it’s sitting flat, especially with white trim
Wondering if you can share the best type of paint to use on metal substrate? I have a hard top metal gazebo that I wanna paint white and someone is selling a barn paint that’s meant for wood and when I look at the specs on it they don’t recommend anything other than wood. When you say you’re using a house paint I’m wondering if you can share what you recommend and if it’s possible to use paint that’s recommended for exterior wood such as fences and Barnes or should I get one specified for metal substrate?
I am filling the cracks in my facial with paintable 30 year caulk. Does anyone know this is a bad idea? I’m troweling it into the cracks after I sanded and primed the surface. Thinking the caulk will stick to the primer better than the wood. I live in Arizona, so the wood is good but it’s got cracks I hope to diminish
If you'll be getting a new roof, is it best to paint the drip edge to match the fascia before installation? Should the drip edge be sanded before primer, or is degreasing enough?
Who would say you should not paint drip edge? Probably the same guys that say you need to use oil base on your garage door or it wont stick.....Here is the deal.... Both of those are factory painted with water based DTM paint. so the water base actually sticks better to it than the oil. They just dont know.
Do you ever use DTM, direct to metal paint. It works for the most part. Just wonder your stance on the DTM? Also what do you think about dry fall paint. Thanks man.
I (most of the time) Tape the roof lip and spray the soffits and fascia together so everything is done at once. Don’t have to go back and hand paint the fascia. Taping the roof lip is 100% faster even though it’s annoying. But going back and painting the fascia is also annoying…
@@gtdodgeviper correct that’s what I’m referring to. On each job it depends what I do. Sometimes I’ll tape a side and then otherside it’s easier to spray shield or stick cardboard under all the shingle roof lips
@@age_of_reason I use a spray shield as well. Some parts of the house I will tape and other it may be faster/easier to spray shield. Or stick cardboard under. Just depends. All those options obliterate going back with ladder movements and handpainting
It all depends on the condition of the facia when deciding which method is best to use, brush and roll or spray. If the facia is wore out looking kinda like roof sawn but not peeling I would brush and roll. If its smooth you can spray it. Or you can do both, the end result is what matters. Spraying the paint will have the paint on surface only, sometimes you have to work it in(back roll) to make it solid.
I could just hear the commenters OMG REALLY....Like anyone would get paid if they got paint all over the roof.....I mean Mr Idaho We might have some differences in opinion but that is just plain disrespectful. Nobody gets paint all over the roof and still gets paid.
Good job. Not sure if you had that extension ladder set up correctly. It looked like you had way to much lean to it,kinda like an escalator. You should be able to put your toes on the feet/legs of the ladder and reach out your arms straight and grab a step. That will give you the proper distance on how far the feet of the ladder should be away from the wall . 👍👍
@@prettyflush but you said not everyone is as nimble as us pure painters as if you were talking about him as well, if he a nimble pure painter it shouldn't matter ?????
@@jhljhl2207 I always use ladder hooks. And I wouldn't drop it. Rather be safe and keep working. Running the risk of spilling and or even worse falling. It takes two seconds to move that hook plus it's fun to carry em that way. Run the risk of getting paint on your hands. Or gloves. Schools out 😎

Listen, I just came here to watch you paint. 👀🔥
I actually like the look when the drip edge is painted the same color as the siding or roof shingles. Gives the look some depth. But to each their own
Chris, a paint job is as good as the PREP! Using top line paint. Good job! TGG Cheers! 🙂

Hi, have you tried using elastomeric patch for the fascia before applying the paint?
Do you caulk the gap between metal drip edge and fascia? I hate how in some spots there’s a gap and other spots it’s sitting flat, especially with white trim
Can you paint a new, white drip edge, or does it need to be primed first?

Do you suggest priming the metal over the original factory paint before painting it?
I'm using self etching primer from the auto parts store.
What would be a good brush to use with aluminum fiber? I wanna brush some small metal trim before i roll the panels.

I just use a spray shield. I stick it under the roof shingles and spray metal flashing, fascia and eves and siding if they're the same color.

I got all green metal gutters and downspouts I want to paint it all black! Should I prime it first? Nothing has been pealing ! Thanks
Yes prime
we call it flashing out in california, always paint it.
Agreed.
If the house is being painted satin white, can we use the same paint to go over the gutters or should they be a high gloss?
Lol whatever you want
Gloss will stay cleaner longer
gloss is easier to clean and better against fading, but you can use any sheen for any application
I use the same paint

Hopefully they never decide to get gutters or they'll have hell trying to get that gutter under the drip edge xD
Why dont you use a handy pail instead of a brush buddy?
Why not just brush it, its faster
Bucket hooks are a thing lol
