  • A good paintbrush costs $15 to $20. Protect your investment by learning how to clean, maintain, and store a brush, so that it’s ready to use the next time you want to put on a professional coat of finish. You’ll need an inexpensive brush comb and a couple of buckets of clean water.

Thank you very much. We've been doing a lot of home improvement this year and I feel like I've spent a small fortune on paint brushes, but never quite sure how to take care of them. This is perfect. Could you do a video on how to pour paint without getting it all over the can? I mean, it's that even possible lol? I've searched You tube & can't find even one.

@@MephProduction Or look at Lowe's I think, for a little gadjet called a "paint dozer".
It really does clean the paint out of the rim and push it back into the bucket, and if your real particular about your lids fitting, a quick wipe with a rag or something and the groove is clean again. Toss the wet those are into your soaking bucket and it'll virtually clean itself if you do it right away.

One thing i want to mention i poke holes on the top of the paint can so the paint will go back into the can i dont see painters do that when you put back on the cover of the paint can all the paint is laying on top and running all over the sides and when you put the cover back on its hard to get of and its a total mess

I can understand why he doesn't use a wire brush, look at his paint brush it's purdy not a cheap make, the brush comb is very good it doesn't expand the bristles outwards like the wire brush does, I'm from Ireland and I use mx or Fleetwood brushes, there the same price as the purdy brush

never used a wire brush or one of those brush combs in my life. Never have issues cleaning my brushes when i give them a little taste of olive oil prior to painting.

@@deirdredoyle9203 condition your brushes as soon as new with olive oil/linseed oil works as well. let them soak over night just about to the ferrule. give them a good wipe down with shed-less microfiber clothe or lint free rag of some sort. It helps the paint flow from the filiments/bristles. has no effect on the paint but clean up is super easy. after ech use just give them a few dabs in oil.
Learned it from a older gentleman who's been pin striping for decades.

I could reteach this for a long minnit, but I understand differences of opinion. I'll give you just a couple for example: I take a battery drill and a fine wire wheel to remove exterior bristle paint, laying the brush on a hard surface and using very little pressure, instantly removing it. When final wash has no paint showing, I hook the handle to a bungee cord, step away and vertically spin-centrifuge the brush to semi-dry it, paw the bristles back together, and this brush is ready for reuse, or hanging from the bungee until dry.
Who keeps those brush containers anyway?

Good video although this only aplies for a touch up brush if you been painting all day you will need to put a wire brush to it.
    With strength 💪

Try this: put a short bungee cord thru the handle, walk away from cars or Windows and centrifuge it in a circle with the hook on the other end around your little finger.
It keeps, any paint residue moving away from core and it's dry enough to o actually use again, like switching colors and wanting to use the same brush.
If I was want to form the bristles in a certain way, I will often let it dry with a rubber band lightly wrapped around them to keep them from splaying out. I used to wire wheel them with a drill, but that causes them the curl outward after a few cleanings and you've just ruined a $19 brush.
Last night I took one of those splayed brushes and sprayed Niagara spray starch into the bristles and all around, wrapped it with a rubber band and let it dry. This morning I painted crown in a master bedroom and it held its shape and ability throughout the room that seems to be getting a little weak, which I think is the paint rinsing out the starch. But it did work pretty well with a really wrecked brush, an angled three and a half inch stiff Purdy .

I came across this video today in a group. It is a fine video on the early basics of brush care, but it is a disposable tool for professionals, so k.i.s.s and don't fret a brush. Now for a diy type good brush care will keep them lasting forever.

Harbor Freight sells Avalon nylon brushes that are extremely high quality for half the price of Purdy or Corona. I never clean out roller heads. They are disposable to me. Cleaning roller heads during a drought is tantamount to sacrilege, plus fouling the water supply is antithetical to my ecological ethos.

So, every time I look at a video on cleaning brushes, they keep doing a "multiple wash" system. Unfortunately, I'm under orders to just store the brush in a small plastic container (repurposed potato salad container) under an inch and a half of paint thinner. The paint thinner isn't enough to cover all the bristles, and I'm cleaning from using oil based paint. If I try to say "here's this alternate cleaning / brush maintenance system that I've seen all these professional painters use. What advantages does your system have over them?", then I'll just get an angry rant about how he's been painting longer than me.
All I'm doing with the paint, really, is touching up the fence in the yard, but I'd rather not feel like I'm doing this in an idiotic way.

  • @josephscott1877

Bending them bristles is bad... Putting all that tensions will make the bristles fall out one by one slowly.....stick a ruler in the centre and use the brush cleaner and jet what onto brush..

You gotta see me use a wire brush on a purdy. Especially after painting in the 100's. As long as you get the paint out and keep the brush cover it will keep it's shape. Put them away dry!

Another video of cleaning a brand new brush and dipping a few times then cleaning, what a joke. I know a couple of pro painters that use a stainless steel wire brush to clean brushes, they say you have to balance the cost of a new brush versus the time you spend cleaning the brush, using a wire brush saves them time they can spend with there families. They say the brush wont last as long but will still last longer enough to get there moneys worth out of the brush and the time they spend with there families is priceless.
