I loved this movie, but the scenes with the mother are just gut punching. I cried like a baby when she walked by her mother in the wedding scene.
Yes the way her faced changed from a big smile too a sad
Ikr, litterally kills me every time
Betty's story arc is really tragic. Bill didn't deserve her. Even at the beginning when her kids are shouting at her to make a cup of tea and she makes it in the microwave you can see she's already a broken person. And she obviously knows Bill is having an affair with Deidre.
It was heartbreaking.
Me too 😢
" You're terrible Muriel" is a sentence I often use in my daily life.
I love this movie, but the parts about her mother are devastating.
Her Mom breaks my heart. I want to hug her 😭😭😭
I felt so sorry for her mum when she got excited to see Muriel at her wedding, and then she walked right past her, and the disappointment on her face just devastated me
That's exactly my thoughts too. That broke my heart and how her mum was treated. It's so sad
That scene was improvised by Jeanie, the mother's actor. She had to tell Toni Colette not to look at her and Toni was very reticent but made it work.
Muriel’s mum breaks my heart when she passes away. Her mental health was so evident and played so extremely well
Broke my heart when she is at the back of the church watching the wedding and as muriel passing her in the aisle she doesn't notice her and the pain and anguish on her face.Brillant acting.
@@edcampion3998 I agree! That broke my heart!
Yeah my first time watching this I was sad for her because she made a little mistake and forgot to pay for the shoes she accidentally took from the store. I hated that nosey snitch woman who snitched on her. If it wasn't for her then the mother would be alive and wouldnt have to fight with her family. 😡😡
@@FlashEarth89 yes I hated her as well. Muriel’s Mum didn’t take the shoes deliberately, she was distracted! Also her husband was a real arsehole putting the family down all the time because they embarrassed him! He was the one who made them feel worthless, especially Betty! She’d put up with his abusive ways for years!
That was my favourite bit. She had it coming as she was holding back Bill and you can't stop progress.
This scene really shows how good the acting and directing is. Her sister spins around in her chair and the look is fantastic!
And what about when her mother asked if she brought any present. Despite the years, this movie is fantastic.
The sister asked that.
One of my favorite movies of all time
I loved this movie when I was a child but now in my 30’s this movie resonates with me on such a deeper level. Easily in my top ten favourite movie list
I'm 31, one of of my favourite films. Muriel was so beautiful in her own way!
I felt so bas for the mom the whole movie she didnt deserve to be treated like that
One of my favorite movies, but muriels mom had no right breaking my heart like she did
Se because she reminded me of my Mom😢
Muriel's mum was the character that stood out most to me. She made me a little angry watching her, seeing how checked out of her own self she was. I think I don't feel sadness but anger at her because I see a lot of myself in her. I wanted to shake her everytime she was on.
Big hug 😢❤️
I feel that there were so many lessons that were learned in this movie. Starting with the girls who were mean to Muriel, it wasn’t until her wedding day that they accepted her. However, it wasn’t genuine. One of my favorite lines in the movie was at the end when Muriel went to Rachel Griffiths house and asked her to go back to porpoise spit with her ,in a fleeting moment, she realized that her loyalty to Muriel was more important than those fake friends. Heartbreaking moment when Muriel passed her mother up at the church. I think this movie had so many lessons that we are all could learn from. One of them was when her mom died, and David showed up for the funeral. That was such a touching moment. It just proves that you can’t judge a book by its cover. He was so mean to her in the beginning. But in the end, when Muriel Went back home to porpoise spit, you knew that she found redemption and happiness in her life. I also liked that. I loved this movie so much.!
“There’s no regret.. If I have to do the same again, I would my friend” LMAO!!!
Talking about how to use a song. 😂😂😂
Muriel’s Wedding should be credited for the resurgence of ABBA.
I'm appalled by this erasure
I love how she was literally coming home, heard her jackass dad was mad, and then turned around and “noped” it on out of there. It’s priceless 😂
BEST MOVIE EVER.
My favourite movie!
Not a big fan of romantic comedies but this absolutely brillant loved it from start to finish and using the abba music masterstroke
This is not a romantic comedy.
This is a tragicomedy. Actually more tragedy than comedy.
@@danielepetrucci5274 one thing we can agree on its a classic movie.
not sure I agree with you on the romantic comedy part as the movie is more sad than anything. Still a fantastic movie
There's nothing romantic in this movie.
I never thought of this movie as a romantic comedy
Can relate to the Mother... heart wrenching... selfish acts and ignorance.
"You're terrible Muriel!"..............................hahahahahahahahahah my favourite part of the film.......hahahahaahahahhahahahahah
Jaime Arévalo no one
Jaime Arévalo watch my video
i literally live 5 minutes from the beach at the start of the film. There’s a lot more buildings at that spot now where the taxi drives. Sadly our mayor is a lot like Bill Heslop and is turning our lovely beach paradise into a concrete jungle
Muriel didn’t seem like such a great person while pursuing her dreams
That's the point, the whole family is messed up.
That's the point, the whole family is messed up.
I agree, she's not necessarily likeable but I guess that makes her realistic lol

indeed. She came from a messed up home and wanted to escape reality and be a new person. But she eventually found it all to be very shallow.
Love this movie. I heard it said to be the saddest comedy.
EPIC FILM
Bill the Battler got the last laugh. You can't stop progress.
Scene Of The Year 1994 Location Southern Gold Coast Coolangatta As Porpoise Spit!
She's in They're a Weird Mob. I will forever adore her, acting or no acting.
Love ya, Muriel ! You're terrible 👍🙌
Muriel’s mum deserved so much better!!!
I know right? :(
¡Qué película!
wish I could see hot dudes walking along the rd , don't get that in Glasgow lol
She gained 40 pounds in 7 weeks for this role. Wow
I was wondering if they filmed her heavy scenes later or did she actually lose weight as the movie was filmed. Putting on weight seems to be quicker than losing it.
The use of this song here, and it's beginning that was part of Muriel pondering about her being nothing was, to me, haunting. Fernando, the song, will forever remind me of the cruelness that was leveled towards Abbas lead vocal here, Anni Frid Lyngstad. Agnetha was certainly beautiful, but Anni endured endless third class treatment as well. Ironically, it's my absolute favorite abba song, and it too, always played second fiddle to dancing queen. I'll never know why cause it is gorgeous, just as is Frida. Just as is Muriel
From Germany... What's the difference between a movie from Hollywood and Australia? The Australian moves go deep and have a quality Hollywood will never reach... "Australian movie / series" is a quality sign to us in Germany! You can laugh, cry and discuss about every single scene for hours.
Hollywood is Holly weird and has been for a long long time
If I’m right, I think fall of the bouquet was a transition into Act 2.
Lol
I’ve never watched this movie and not been absolutely devastated by the mother.
Watch it then!
I cried for the mother. She was abused her entire family and she died.
You're terrible Muriel!
I would have not come back but she got the money she stole from her dad and family 😁
2:42 RACK
This scene didn't make sense. Why go back home to her folks when she'd robbed them of all their cash?
She expected they didn't notice so soon.
@@sexysadie2901 you wouldn't notice someone had stolen 12,000 dollars from your account?
Nowhere else to go I suppose
@@honeypeaches7736 wow, she really was an imbecile. If you’re going to rinse your parents’ bank account make sure you have a place to go afterwards that’s far away
