Toni Collette is so fearless in the scene. She goes to such a raw emotional place that the emotion just reaches out and grabs your heart.
Yeah. As much as in Hereditary. Such a magnificent actress
@@Fvillegas I'm excited for "Knives Out"
That's what I said to my daughter when I sent her the link to this film. She adores Toni Collette and I told her I watched this film last night on TCM because of her. This scene had to be extremely difficult to go into such a raw emotional place. Brilliant acting throughout the whole film!
And hilarious at the same time!
Sometimes rejection is protection. Muriel may have been rejected those ladies, but Rhonda proved to be an even BETTER friend in the end. When one door closes, another opens.
Rhonda was a much better person anyway. She accepted Muriel no matter what her style status was. And what's also good is that Muriel returned how good Rhonda was when she got cancer, Muriel stuck around helping her out almost full-time until Rhonda finally said "You don't have to do all this for me, I don't want to hold you back"
she is so much better off without them
Exactly.
Toni Colette plays Muriel with so much affection and fearless energy that she makes you laugh and cry at the same time. One of the 90s best films and performances. Still in awe after all those years. Love from Switzerland 🇨🇭
Ironically I discovered this movie when I was living in Switzerland. For some reason I always thought it was a french film.
Toni Collette is a brilliant actress
This scene hit too close to home. The friends’ overt criticism of Muriel is like the inner-voice of self-criticism some of us struggle with. I guess it’s funny because it’s hyperbolic, but my God I just wanna run into that scene and hug her 😢😢
same,id totally be freinds with muriel shes awesome
Taking a look at this scene it shows that you're much better to hang around with people who don't come with an 'entry requirement check list' e.g. must like same music, clothes, taste in men/food etc. One of Muriel's appeals is that she appeals to those people who are rejected by their peers for not being of a certain standard, for being an 'outsider' . She appeals to them. And, in my honest opinion, it's better to be friends with an outsider than someone with an 'entry requirements check-list'
It's like seeing Drew Barrymore getting egged in Never Been Kissed. It's funny because she's being over the top, but also I cry every single time. The only difference is that this movie embraced how ridiculous emotions can be.
@@DasSchwarzeKorsett yeah, these girls are like the Australian version of the snobby popular girls in "Never been kissed" who only accept her for superficial requirements, or the popular clique in "Mean girls". Each of these movies also has the one true friend who's also on the outside but totally accepts the hero no questions asked. It's Rachel Griffith's character here in "Muriel's wedding", it's that one girl in "Never been kissed" (forgot her name) who they try to dump dog food on at the dance, and it's in "Mean girls" it's the goth-like girl who hangs around with the gay guy
Of course we would, because fortunately, most of us are not c***s, those 4 women rank from c**t to extreme c**t, in no particular order.
this scene crushed my heart 💔
I have totally cried like that before
Amazing Toni Collette's performance.
Me 2!! And, for that same reason!
So have I and I'm a guy.
Your friends kicked you out?
It’s cathartic..
Sophie Lee was phenomenal as Tanya Degano. She was everything Muriel wanted to be. She was gorgeous, popular, married, everything Muriel dreamed about, and Tanya was always miserable. Sophie played her in such a funny way lol
This was one of THE MOST PAINFUL movies I've ever watched! How it was deemed a 'comedy' is beyond my comprehension. I felt so bad for the poor girl throughout the whole damn film.
Its more of a campy drama.
I think its a black comedy myself
Interesting perspective never thought it in the light you speak of I was a newly teenager so Hearing it was a comedy that’s what I went in expecting
It’s called black comedy. If we can still call it that. Funny and tragically sad at the same time.
The correct term for this would be 'dramedy'.
Toni Collette is just so brilliant. She totally committed to the role and this scene is heart wrenching.
+ I can change!
- You'll still be you!
Oh God that was brutal. Totally crushed my heart.
Yes you still are you, just a different kind of you! Hello? Good gracious some will never change from being shallow and narcissistic however, so it’s just as well Muriel decided they were never worth her time in the end…
Dear God, this brought back flashbacks of my first day of my sophomore year. My 3 friends, who I'd hung out with my whole life, told me to get lost. My heart dropped to the floor. Luckily, I've always been kind to people, so I had many other options. I went and hung out with my other friends and actually became better liked than them, because the word got around, how cold they were, so they didnt have too many friends after that. After a couple weeks, one of them actually asked to be friends again and left the other 2 for good. I ended up in far better shape and had way more fun, without them.
"You'll still be you."
That's brutal.
Brutal but true. It was up to Muriel to figure out that, being herself as she is, is the best way to be.
you’ll still be you no matter how much you think you’ve changed. all the makeup in the world won’t make you less insecure.
That physically hurt me, I'll be honest.
Says the girl who screwed Tanya's husband at the wedding reception.
This movie is a rare example of an absolutely perfect film.
There's at least one plot hole. This scene, and the opening wedding scene, made me wonder why Muriel was friends with the other girls to begin with if they're "cool," and she's a loser.
Megs They keep her around because they enjoy putting her down and making themselves feel superior. But then that got old for them so they decided to throw her away since they were all sin planning marriages
@@519forestmonk9 I actually theorized that maybe their parents pushed them to be friends with Muriel because of her father's political influence. That sounds like a stretch, but it was the only thing I could think of.
Megs that could well be. Regardless, I’m glad they “let her finish her orgasm first” 😂😂
@@519forestmonk9 Yes, and Muriel kept sticking around them because she kept wanting to be one of them, and she was hoping that she eventually would be, until they told her straight out here how that would never happen and that they wanted her to just go, and it crushed her. And Muriel still kept trying to cling on to them, she followed them to their vacation spot. She only finally stopped trying to get with them once she met up with Rhonda again, and she found a better friend in her
Girl sitting at the end: You listen to 70’s music, this is the 90’s.
Me: I prefer the 80’s.
I listen to '50s, '60s, '70s, and '80s music! 😁😁😁
This scene broke my heart! She doesnt have to change anything about herself, shes so beautiful and fabulous! Would love to be her friend
now how Muriel feels .. been there .
"Ya fat". So savage.
Every Australian highschool had/has those girls 😂 true to form
Yeah, and they usually age rapidly and horribly. When reality catches up to them it's downhill for them. They simply stall in life and for most of them there's no way to start all over or just reform themselves.
@@kungfucow547 Those of us geeks that didn't drink, smoke and sun tan now look the best in our 40s lol.
Aquila Nona so true. The dumb cows at Burwood girls high nsw are the worst!
Every high school all over the world have girls like this.
Every highschool in the World has those kind of girls
I’m so pleased Toni has had a good career so far. When I first saw her in this I knew she was great. Very very real and always can’t wait to watch her next movie. Simply brilliant 👍Thank you Toni, all the very best from Scotland 🏴
heres a classic example of one door closes another one opens ....she was devastated when these horrid toxic pigs banished her but it opened the door for the amazing bestie rhonda ❤
Those girls are selfish!! Every friend should support what their friends like, even if they are different. Muriel must be more fun and mad, they are too blind to see it.
They were never her proper friends, they just let her hang out with them. Probably out of pity or to make them look better
At least Muriel's hairstyle hasn't dated like the hairstyles of her 'friends'.
My husband spontaneously proposed to me after this movie because he saw me as Muriel and wanted to make me happy. lol Lasted 20 years til death did us part.
Its evident that muriel is more fun and mad as well as Rhonda 💜 These stuck up chicks are boring af with all the rules and regulations.
My heart breaks for her every time I was this!! Love Muriel!!!
Same, here. Not only does that scene break my heart, it also p*&$es me off!!!💔😢💢😠
I really feel sorry for Muriel in this scene. With friends like these who needs enemies?
They are still the same people with no morals and values
Tanya and rest of her girls were never really Murial‘s friend. You can tell the way they treat her as I think, she want to drop her out of the group.
Que nostalgia con esta increible pelicula. Adoro a Toni es una de mis actrices favoritas. Muy versatil en comedua o drama
I love 70 ies music!
Always have
It’s the best !
I would give an Oscar for this film and one to Toni Colette
If Muriel stayed on to try and impress these so called friends just to hang with them, she would end up like Sharon following Kim around
Anything with Toni Colette in it is going to be very good and worth watching
Omg Muriel is so me in high school lol 😂
I just wanna give her big hug! I feel so bad for her! She deserves better friends like Rhonda! And what’s wrong with 70’s music? I love ABBA they’re my favorite band ever! And I’m only 14.
There's also Queen, Pink Floyd and David Bowie!
Exactly, I still listen to my old music and now listen to music sometime.
One of the best movies ever!!!!!!
I've had many years many times ive cried like this.
00:58 "You listen to '70s music!" Says someone who may have been born in the 1970s 😄
Hey I was born in 95 and I still love listening to music from the 60s and 70s
I wanna hug her so much!
That laugh in the background at 2:17 😂😂
I like her friend who told those girls off and Nicole was having an affair with Chuck and she ran off with him and this movie was great and funny! I like Muriel and I know how she feels when she was being let go from the group been there several times.
these girls really existed in my high school
It really make feel sad like it did Last century. Love toni movie collection is insane I trully recomend United States Of Tara. Old Brazilian fan
Been in this situation a few times. It’s not a good feeling when you have a so-called friend or friends who completely rip you to shreds in front of others and make you feel like s**t. That’s why I don’t associate with toxic, narcissistic people anymore but even though I’ve been out of high school for 34 years, it’s still “high school” in the real world no matter where you go.
Toni is such a talented actress!! She is SO good in this, little miss sunshine and hereditary.
And the Sixth Sense
I thought she play Judy Garland not Rene but Rene was ace ax❤
Excuse me, but where did Nir-Vana get their inspiration from? That’s right, Seventies Music!!
Girls like that dont listen to Nirvana in real life anyway :p they'd think it's a designer label.
Yep, and they’d get The Rolling Stones mixed up with a book
They're too stupid to realise that though
@@marcyp6848 you don't seem to realise when this movie's from or how big nirvana were
Goddamn this movie is so unbelievably good.
At 2:16 you can hear a man in the background laughing
You're right -- you have a good ear. I've watched this clip a trillion times and I've never noticed that.
They are out in public so it made sense.
I think yes laughing at Tanya when she says she'll sleep with 1000 men.
@@marcyp6848 no im pretty sure hes laughing because muriel is crying
Toni Collette is the best movie ever and she plays Muriel wedding
These girls have beaitiful faces as actresses but they’re the mean ones in this movie still.
I know this movie is comedy and I kinda enjoyed it like that, but I just felt terrible for Muriel until the end... oh well
I always suspected that Tania and them only included Muriel because her father was involved in politics. It would explain it.
I met a woman who met Toni Collette(Ii know) Toni said she thought Muriel was a terrible person. I find that interesting as I thought she placed her very sympathetically
Well, Muriel is very insecure, status conscious, and quick to pursue her own ambitions at her friends' expense. She really does have some moral ambiguity. For me one of the most powerful scenes is at the funeral of her mother, when Muriel realizes just how much she resembles her father. That's the moment of her real maturity, when she decides to break the cycle. Toni's brilliant and sympathetic portrayal keeps us invested in Muriel, even when she's less than sympathetic.
Some of us happen to like 70's music thank you very much!
What nice and kind friends Muriel has
Weve all felt this way at one point.. just.. not enough.
Yep. But we were and are enough.
You're terrible Muriel
I love this film, but every time I get to this scene I remember "oh yeah, this isn't a comedy, it makes me want to kill myself." Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths tho
Powerful acting..😢
I know what this feels like. 😢
They’re being bullying on Muriel!
Jesus christ, the way you can see how she slowly breaks down.
And today Toni is the biggest star that came our of the move. Everything she did agter this was a hit for me
Lets be real - women can be brutal.
Human beings can be brutal, period. Men or women alike.
So can men. Boys picked on me way more at elementary (primary) and middle (intermediate) school for some reason. Then I went to an all girls high school where no one bullied me. Yay
Unfortunately people can be so cruel and pathetic.
I think everyone should be able to be proud of themselves for who they really are. However... I think we all cover up our true selves in some form...
Hopefully one day we can all be "normal". Whatever "normal" is. Normality is a social construct.
Yo I went up on MeetMe and these types fill out the ranks
Most girls arnt like this, they also tend to grow out of it . Some men are horrid to girls like murial all there life. But most people grow out of being shallow and a bully
And Muriel you were better than any of those girls!!!!
Never beg to be with someone. They either want you or they don't.
"This is the 90s.." yet you're still dressing like it's the 80s.
I can’t bear this scene- way too realistic. This is how people really treat each other. TC really wrenches the heartstrings in this. 😢
Coming from Nicole who was sleeping with her best friends husband behind her back the whole time. I laughed so hard when she got found out.
The Aussie Plastics
The ORIGINAL plastics
Plastics are everywhere, even in the real world...for some people, high school never ends.
There was a chick in my class that said “it’s from Muriel’s wedding. The ORIGINAL mean girls” haha
@@roddo1955
Did you eat a brain tumour for breakfast?
Yeah, but the point is it doesn't matter how pretty THREE of her friends are (The brunette on the far left is plain as fuck!), it's their nasty personalities that make them horrid, and therefore, unattractive. The sort of girls that no man in his right mind would actually marry, whereas, once her friendship with her old school-friend boosts Muriel's confidence, she would make a much better wife.I feel sorry for Muriel as I have been both one of the pretty and popular crowd and one of the dags (as the Aussies say!) when I was 13-15 I wasn't popular, I blossomed but I never forgot what it felt like to be plain so when I did get popular I never FELT pretty...I think I was probably nicer for it.If you are born pretty you can take it for granted as you are treated differently and you can become nasty, I think.Poor Muriel's mum though!
margaret sayers Im (' also australian) and I've never ever been popular I've always been the unpopular one who hang with other unpopular people. but I don't want to be popular, the drinking, partying, isn't for me.
I'm mean but I've never thought the "Beautiful!" one was beautiful at all. She's got the same bug eyes as the brunette on the far left you are referring to. And the little blond is just sort of odd looking. Like a little goblin. I feel bad typing this though. They are real people and unlike their characters they could actually be wonderful people, yet sadly like their characters they really do look like this.
The anti-hero is this is also Muriel's father, the corrupt councillor, who thwarts the confidence of his wife and children. Muriel made more of an effort than her siblings and moved to Sydney to get a job even if she stole money before that.
@@ascent8487 A little goblin! LOL OMG that cracks me up! And you're right, she does. Especially in the last scene where Rhonda wheels out the house and yells they're all a bunch of skanky cocksuckers. The little blonde goblin is sitting on the end of the couch, holding a cigarette, and she has the most priceless look of horror on her little goblin face. Like "Oh! Well I never!" After all these years, that look still gives me giggle fits.
Nicole and Tanya are pretty (at least on the outside). Janine, the blonde one in the red top, looks odd, sort of sour and pinched looking in the face.
Mean girls 90s style
Muriel is such a mood tbh
Great movie. So funny and yet so sad.
Those three were never her friends.
Why is Tanya crying over Chuck? Had Rhonda already told her about him hooking up with the bridesmaid? I'm guessing no, since she doesnt have a black eye yet.
Pah-ty, Pah-ty, Pah-ty!
I love this scene but it brings a lot of PSTD
Just like every school around the world has girls like that they also have guys like that. When I was in school 90s I didn’t talk much (still don’t) but sat at a lunch table with a bunch of skaters who basically said I was getting lunch dumped on me if I didn’t talk. I got up and left and never went back into the lunch room. Growing up extremely introverted is hard for anyone.
Bullies are cowards. You be you.
Filmed at the late great Grotta Capri restaurant.
I love Toni..
Lmao.
There was never a shortage of chicks like that at the high school I went to in Adelaide.
Bitchy, thinking they are on trend, full of themselves, and cruel?
And they are all fat, ugly and poor now I bet.... the similar girls at my high school are.... :)
Now you dont even say it face to face...
I love how she refers to them as “normal” they are far from normal.
It seems Tanya is the nicest one. At least she looks like she felt bad about Muriel.
2:19 Muriel, you’ve started it
embarrassing in front of us, again!
they were never her friends
Exactly, I think her father paid the 3 girls. Pretend to be her friends, probably to make a good image. When he was trying to running for mayor long ago.
I Remember this
I really feel her pain.
Me in the morning when I'm hungover and have to go to work.
She's selfish?! They just hurt her feelings and don't comfort her but comfort that other woman! Hypocrites! They're the ones who should be embarrassed they're all selfish and horrible friends and don't care about her feelings!
Nicole couldn't even be bothered to comfort Tania despite knowing full well it was her fault she was so upset
Tanya and rest of her girls were never really Murial‘s friend.
The scene shows just how pretentious, cruel, false and self-egotistical those girls were. With friends like those who needs enemies? Great acting btw...
Today's Muriel would probably be listening to The Baby Animals Lol. Nirvana are still cool obviously.
Lol. Only a few decades behind. Would she still be listening to ABBA though.
Yes! They more respected now than ever. @@meropale
WOW! Just... WOW!
It's simply SAD, but REAL in real life.
Toni Collette: 👏👏👏👏👏!
It's interesting that Tania barely said anything until the end. She had much bigger problems than Muriel hanging out with them.
I feel really bad for that girl
Am I the only person who doesn't see Muriel as "fat"? She's not skinny like those other women but to me she just looks like a regular woman! It's the only problem I have with this movie.
Wasn't that the point? They're judgemental assholes, haven't seen it in years but I always thought that was the point.
Toni put lots of weight on for this role and I think she looks fab. Especially with shorter hair further into the film. She looks like the average size here in the UK. Not fat. But those girls are bitches so of course they are going to say that to her.
The obesity rates were lower in the early 90's than they are today. Muriel is fat by early 90's standards. It's depressing that what was clearly "fat" in 1993 is now viewed as "regular" because they're so many morbidly obese people today. It seems to get worse every decade with us soon to be looking like the gastropods in WALL-E. Something has gone seriously wrong with our diets and lifestyles.
@@mkeogh76 I'm sorry but something was really wrong with diets and lifestyles in the 90s when Kate Moss and "heroin chic" was all the rage. There was nothing seen as wrong with girls were smoking cartons of cigarettes to suppress their appetite and living off concentration camp rations and/or yo yo dieting and ridiculous diets. We were constantly being encouraged to hate their bodies through those toxic magazines like Vogue, Cosmo and Grazia. Oh and remember "binge and purge"? The age of eating disorders. Back that all up with doing hours of cardio at the gym.
Screwed up my self confidence and body image for life. There was nothing healthy about it.
@@mkeogh76
Yeah it increased from like 20% to 30%. Not a big enough change to cause that kind of warped perception. And when has media ever had an accurate portrayal of real people's weight?
I know exactly how she feels
They're terrible Muriel
Why did Muriel invite those twits to her wedding after they rejected her on the island they were at? Muriel deserved better than them and she got married and she wanted to prove the world wrong and she wanted to have a wedding and show the world that she was loved too. Muriel's wedding a classic.
She didn't invite them. They came crawling back to her
@@morbidsearch And she only let them come to the wedding so she could prove she is just as good as they are.

“Listen to 70s music” - what these girls are ignorant to realise was that it ABBA was already cool again (Erasure’s ABBAesque EP)
They were just barely starting to have a resurgence in popularity with the Erasure EP. This movie and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert helped a great deal in building that early momentum.
