It's because of those dark parts in the movie that the ending is so uplifting. This movie a classic.

i immediately recognized the dark part of this movie...and cried uncontrollably. it was the mother's character that sent me over the edge.

100% agree. I think Betty Heslop’s life of quiet desperation, which ultimately tragically implodes, is one of the darkest dramatic arcs ever filmed. Jeannie Drynan was Oscar worthy with that tragic look she gave at the wedding where she felt invisible.

@@gerardmackay8909 for me, that character's darkest moment was when she realized the jig was up, she started hitting the son with pillows (trying to project blame onto him, but simultaneously maintaining the hierarchy of the husband as her sole reason for living), and then...the ultimate--she went into the kitchen and just like before, stood in front of the microwave while waiting for tea, as if that established pattern (her role) would perhaps make things return to their previous state. that scene was almost unbearable for me. her misguided belief in married life and all that it was supposed to do for her...in that one moment, her character made me feel everything she had ever experienced--all the disappointment, followed by trying to conjure up renewed belief, followed by more disappointment.

@@liz-sy2lj oh yes her final release of all that pent up frustration at her son, when the horrific Bill finally took off, was a perfect visceral meltdown in all its tragic glory, blaming anyone and everyone else for the ghastly Bill’s abandonment of her . I seriously think Jeannie Drynan gave possibly the most unlauded performance in cinema history.

The scene in the middle of the movie where Muriel goes out to the department stores to try wedding dresses after finding out her friend has cancer, and that mellow version of Dancing Queen playing in the background, if you can make it through that scene without crying, then your heart must literally be made of stone

When I first saw MW when it came out, I was convinced Collette wasn't acting. I thought it was just her for real and this would be her one and only film because they matched a person so perfectly to the role that Muriel didn't really have to act. LOL
It was a huge shock to see in the next few roles.Just goes to show how good Collette really is as an actress.

Honestly I had to purchase the movie so I can watch as many times as I need to, because it’s a news for me, to see that life’s are not perfect, that life’s can be terrifying, and sad without having to be, and yet there is the willingness to live regardless and try to be at peace without having to make someone responsible for what was and for what it wasn’t. Dark tell me about it and yet is a joy throughout the movie the can’t be explain. Forever my favorite feel good movie of all times
