Living for ten thousand years or forever is an amazing chance to explore the Earth and the Universe. Isn't that enough of a reason to get out of bed?

But you dont want to wait that amount of time. And if you do, you would become a conformist person, because you are not looking for better and faster ways to improve that loooong journey.
I think that is how Tyson thinks about living forever.

Immortality is for really curious scientists that will basically want to explore everything that there is. That is their motivation to live and wake up everyday. Google did talk about living forever and it seems possible for them to make it possible in our lifetimes but it really is your own personal choicd

I think that comparing flowers to a human life is not a fair comparison. I personally think living forever would be great and i would want that for the soul purpose to take over the wo- i mean because i really want to see how we humans along with technology turn out. I want to see the new challenges we humans are faced with and how we overcome it. I want to experience new philosophical quandaries and maybe watch old ones be solved. And even if things go bad i would want to witness the end of our human race just for the sake of knowing how we go out.

Of course, the human body has a shelf life but to prolong it you would only get older, older and older. Your body will lose a lot of hearing, sight and muscle functions and have to be bedridden for decades....don't think I'd call that great.

I feel as though it's because the flower is beautiful that it's given as a gift, not simply because it dies.
If there were roses you could give that would last twice as long, I'm sure they would sell far better than those that were also recently marketed to live half the normal time.

Doesn't matter if it's an infinite journey or not because we're not going to know CERTAINLY that even if we live forever, our universe will live forever. And let's assume that you were able to get out of your dying universe and transport everybody into another universe, will we be able to even estimate if the 'universe' of multiverses is going to die or not some time? I think people should think about it in this way. Because of that uncertainty, even if you are immortal, you will still need to spend time wisely, not sitting in front of a computer for a billion years and play every single game.

I wouldn't want to live forever! Just imagine if a flower bloomed forever... The beauty is lost and the flower becomes insignificant. However! When flowers wilt and die, you can see the flower and capture the moment of its beauty. The same way is with our lives. And i can die knowing that iv'e planted my seed for the other buds to bloom after i perish.

    • @aldi9802

I don't know. But there's nothing more annoying that having the flowers you got someone start to die and smell. I'd rather the flower keep on living, or at least last a few months.

I wouldn't want to live forever, but if we can extend our lifespans to, like....2, maybe 2.5 thousand years, I think that's a good limit. At least, that's how long I'd wanna live for.

“It is the knowledge that I'm going to die that creates the focus that I bring to being alive; the urgency of accomplishment; the need to express love; now, not later. If we live forever, why ever even get out of bed in the morning? Cause you always have tomorrow. That's not the kind of life I want to lead.”
    ― Neil deGrasse Tyson
I agree with that quote for sure. I’d imagine that if anybody were immortal that such a person might choose to stay wherever he/she/they would rest a rather long time. That’s kind of what we do or will do during eternity!

"If everyone who had ever lived were still alive there would be 100,000,000,000 people. Where would you put everybody?" A valid question - and the answer is "That wouldn't work." But in The
Future? They will live very long lives in space habitats in a Dyson Swarm with a small percentage living in space colonies on the other planets and moons. Oh, and another small percentage will be living in interstellar arks, spreading humanity throughout the galaxy. I'd like to live long enough to see that.

    • @anadhdprepper6490
      @anadhdprepper6490 6 років тому

Robert Graybeard it’s also a really stupid question that has honestly nothing to do, we will expand as we colonize and grow in population, but obviously we’re not ready for a over 90 billion people, duh

I would want to live long enough to be able to do everything I wanted such as seeing all the movies I want to see, listening to all the music I want to hear, reading all the books I want to read, playing all the songs I can possibly play on guitar, playing all the videos games I want to play, etc. Maybe 100,000 years to a million. But not forever.
And not only that it's physically and thermodynamically impossible to live forever. All the science trying to achieve immortality is and will be wasted. Immortality is nothing but a pipe dream for people who fear death.

Also my opinion is maybe with AI have a cyber heaven where you can do whatever and not have to store all the people in physical space and use resources other than electricity or a new source of energy.

***** we could if there was a masive demand. Its currently almost useless for companies or governments to even attempt space colonization because the demand just isnt there. Earth is fine and there is enough room for everyone as well as enough resources(minus 3rd world countries that suffer because of political reasons and yes this includes african ones). So there is no real intensive.
Now imagine a universe where it has become possible to become immortal or close to it. Well what would happen is suddenly there would be huge intensives to make this sustainable because not only is people gonna want this for themselves but also there kids.
So suddenly we would have a global shift in priorities. My guess is we would reach Alpha Centauri in 50 years time of having humanity transcend into an immortal species. The shear innovation would be astronomical.

I disagree. Living a really, really long time is only bad if you lack resources. Resources can be many things money, health, friends, intellect, etc. There is a lot of things to do. I often wonder why rich people are so often unhappy. Maybe they have money resources and lack those other resources. Wouldn't you want to learn to paint, compose music, learn new languages, contribute to science and invent things, go for walks, care for animals, pick up new hobbies? Just experiencing these things fully would take a long, long time. The exciting thing is space travel. At some point we will be able to go somewhere else - a brand new adventure. Going back to the concept of living forever - there are 7.2 billion people and rising... that is a lot of potential relationships to explore. If we meet an alien race maybe you spend several thousands of years exploring their history and culture.

I appreciate a rose because it's pretty not because it will die, if plastic could mimic the natural beauty of a rose and aroma i would appreciate it the same way
I appreciate life because there are fun things to see and do, beautiful music to listen, interesting stories to read, nice people to meet. Not because I will die one day, what the fuck man
On the practical scale I will agree, progress requires death, old ideas die along with old people to make way for new ideas and also there is no room and not enough food for that many people

it's not my proposed solution, it's reality.
Death is necessary, unfortunately. It's tragic to happen in young people but after a certain age it is just time to go. Change is necessary, nature's imagination cannot be stationary.

Or there could just be a continual free flow of ideas without societal pressure, like it is kinda now, I mean it’s not like we’re all in the same mindset, I would even say we need old to contradict to the new, because the new might be worst, or vise verse, if we could live forever, not to farfetched

  • @PaceyPimp

You guys are not getting it. It's not that because he dies is not why it's great it's because the beauty of the flower is limited as it dies you appreciate it while you have it, if not what's the point of getting another bouquet every year. If you notice that when you're a kid things just seem amazing and magical and as you grow up things seem boring because we already know and I have seen everything and while they're still many things we can see if we lived forever we would eventually run out of things. Having a time limit on life forces you to appreciate it while you have it. If you were eternal a lot of your motivations would die with it and a lot of boredom would be part of your life. In reality it would become a sort of hell to live in. Not eternal life but a longer life would be great.

Hey Neil, guess what? We actually live forever. We are fact immortal spiritually or energetically conscious. Not because our body (vessel or vehicle for the soul) die, means we don't exist. Our natural energetic state of existence is beyond the perception of the human senses. i personally wish death was the end; but it's not, so i have to do my best live joyfully physically.

We actually have enough room for people considering that the birth rate drops and innovation continues to solve problems plus space travel. If you stay young and you prevent nobody else, why wouldn´t you live forever? Why would you not be motivated? So much you can do. Well, Einstein hated artificial prolonging of life, too. Maybe older people have a psychological burden that they can´t overcome, I think we younger people will gladly embrace overcoming death! Why not for god´s sake? If we have enough for all (we will)

I would then make education and science the forefront of our society and get rid of fossil fuels and elongate the life of humans. Then i would strive to master intergalactic travel. Once that is mastered i would travel the cosmos in search of other life that is similar to our own.

I wouldn't want to live forever either for not for any of the reasons Mr. Tyson proposes. I'm sure I would stay plenty motivated and inspired to do everything of possible interest. I wouldn't want to live forever though because there would be a myriad of other problems like... are you also invincible? Because I have already fucked my body significantly within a few decades. You would eventually lose all your limbs and become one massive scar. Also, if you didn't die you would quickly fall out of society and fail to keep up with the herd. You would also be undesirable in terms of beauty as that standard changes as our bodies evolve and change. You wouldn't be attracted to one of our cave dwelling mammalian ancestors, nor would you hold a conversation with them. What about trans-humanism that we seem to be on the edge of? Do you really want to remain an antique relic from a long extinct biological age of human development? Everyone else will have their brains and bodies genetically and technologically engineered and enhanced and you would have the viable of a worm in comparison to these new beings that were once called humans.
