Neil truly is a gift to this earth. His enthusiasm is just so contagious and inspiring
His vest is so epic ;)
I kind of want to see his tie collection
So is his voice.
Don't care if he is show-biz 'royalty'. No excuse for being incredibly rude. Especially to somebody as interesting and thought provoking as Neil.
+Donal Caldwell he doesn't even let Neil answer and he asks another question lol
+Bob. He is like that in many interviews. And it pisses me off, but he probably has a set amount of questions on a variety of topics to get through. This one he wasnt even that bad for it.
That's just Larry's style of interviewing and it works really well. He tries to catch them off guard and keep them on their toes with his questions so they barely have time to think which often makes the interviews much more honest.
It seems to me like the video is edited in a way that makes it appear that the questions are being asked faster than they actually are
jake W No, Larry King is known for that. He tries to catch the people he interviews off guard.
Neil deGrasse Tyson is the kind of guy you wanna have a beer with
+George Mason
Beer is for frat boys. I'd rather have a glass of wine with Neil.
+JanetStarChild if you came to the Northwest of the UK and said that beer was for frat boys you'd get the shit kicked out of you.
Dan Reader
Presumably by kids in their teens and 20s who believe drinking beer makes them "grown up".
I was like that too until around 30, when I matured and switched to wine.
+JanetStarChild presumably not. By people of all ages all the way up the their 60s actually. Beer and ale is a much bigger thing here than it is in the US. Mainly because our beer doesn't taste like fizzy piss!
JanetStarChild The beer reference was just my was of saying that I would like to have a conversation with him. Where I come from when you want to hang out with someone you usually say, "you wanna go get a beer or something". I don't like beer myself. I don't really drink, but when I do I only really drink scotch.
If I were to actually have the chance to hang out with him we probably wouldn't be drinking. It would dilute the conversation and I probably wouldn't be able to get into the depth I would want to go into. Off topic, I've sent several dozen physics questions into the Hayden Planetarium.
Imagine having a father like Neil to play chess with, let alone learn from. I know Neil said that the concept of role model is bad but in his sons case, he has probably one of the greatest role models of modern society, in his house. Lucky guy :)
+Dharmaa RS
Hey don't diss your dad :p
When you become a dad you'll feel bad you're nowhere near Neil degrasse
to your children :p
Dharmaa RS Wish my parents were that awesome and understanding!
yeah but neil probably drinks right from the milk carton and hides the tv remote. JUST KIDDING
Not just an astrophysicist and brilliant man of science but a sound philosopher also I would say. Cool interview.
I have recently just discovered NDT through UA-cam videos. The more I watch him, the more I respect him more then anybody else. His levels of intelligence are probably extreme, but he doesn't come off as a pedantic jerk. He seems to respect everyone, even if they don't agree with him, and doesn't try to dissuade anybody from personal beliefs. An above average mind, with an average joe personality. Just awesome.
"As my parents did not do for me, I don't want to tell [my kids] what to be interested in, because then their life's passion will be false. The only way you know it's real is if it girdles up from within. Then, you can become the world's expert in it, and people will beat a path to your door, because you'll be doing it, not because someone told you, not because someone offered you money, not for any other reason but because it stimulated your deepest core curiosity about how this world works."
Good quote.
The chance to interview such a beautiful mind and genuine person...blows it. This man very well may be viewed as the likes of Einstein.. DeGrasse, always a class act and floors me everytime he speaks.
"I like people who don't pretend to be something that they're not: women who wear less makeup, women who are short but don't try to wear heels"
Dr Tyson, you are a legend.
@Joe Box how tf does that make him something that he's not?
Wow. What he said there about his kids...I bet he is an amazing father.
The role model thing reminds me:
Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it
~Bruce Lee
Neil is just a big ipositive nfluence to me. He's just made my curiosity of the natural universe bloom more then ever. Thank you doctor neil.
It's a bit ironic that he prolonged an explanation of 'carving longer things into shorter things,' when he could've simply said 'to simplify.'
"As my parents did not do for me, I don't want to tell my children what to be interested in, then you know their life's passion would be false, the only way you know it's real is if it gurgles up from within, you can become the world's expert in it and people will beat a path to your door. Then you will be doing it not because someone told you, not because someone offered you money, not for any other reason than because it stimulated your deepest core curiosity the how this world works" Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson A Quote that comes from deeper than Molten Lava..
What I love about the UK is that science, especially in the younger generation and in university, science is becoming cool again. People like me who have no scientific knowledge whatsoever find men like Mr Tyson a wonder to behold.
Neil speaks in a way that totally captivates me..He would be such an interesting guy to just let him talk about his passions and interests and even his theories.
Let him talk Larry.
I just adore Larry King. He has kept me company for many nights. Am so glad deGrasse
Tyson was here to delight us with his great with and intellegence
this guy should be president
I would love it too, but I like him to be more focused. President has to deal with everything or at least say they do. Tyson, needs to be in science because science would lose out big time without him.
luckynater dont do that to him :P
luckynater dont do that to him :P
He should at least be in Congress
Why, because he's smart? President is in charge of the Executive Branch and the military, it should be someone with experience, a scientist would be out of his field and could make the worse decisions in the moment when he's on the spot because he's inexperienced and out of his league. Leave him where he belongs and has passion.
A fan of buddy guy! My kind of guy right here. Neil, you so cool.
Hit that "edit" button.
5:33 You interrupt the man from telling us something that no one knows about him, to ask him something that everyone knows about him. Brilliant!
I could listen to him all day. He could be talking about anything and I could still listen.
He doesn't care a bit about the answers Neil is giving. Might as well have a teleprompter.
what’s funny to me is that in using the metaphor about “carving” something, which initially gives the viewer an image of him carving/whittling wood, he actually ended up not being concise at all having to explain what he meant. great clip.
Perhaps one of the more interesting people that Larry King has interviewed and he couldn't seem more disinterested in the answers and actually engaging in a conversation. And if all you're there to do is ask questions, then don't interrupt the answer. It shows that Larry's goal is to complete the task and nothing more.
This guy's my hero
Furious jordan To each his own. I'm not much of a fan of Larry. To be honest I much rather watch Conan.
Otter Insanity no I mean Neil lol
Furious jordan hahah
I would love to listen to blues with Neil and have him tell me awesome things about the cosmos
i could watch Neil talk all day and never get bored lol
We need more people like Neil deGrasse Tyson!
this interview was very significant. his articulation of how he treats his kids passions should be an example for all parents. a great man he is. and the world is better for it....
He even listens to Buddy Guy?!...I like Tyson more every time i see him.
I Like the deep sound of Larry King.. I like how Neil talks and think..
this is truly a good talk..
Neil deGrasse Tyson is fascinating person with a brilliant mind. I could watch him all day.
00:39 goals af. Universal truths are like handles on lifes rollerscoaster
Neil deGrasse Tyson is so interesting to listen to, I could listen to him talk about anything all day and never get bored, he speaks so well for himself, I truly admire who he is and what he stands for and his values
This guy is truly an inspiration to me, as well as a huge influence. He truly loves and enjoys science.
This just made my day. After having watched nearly every interview of Dr. Tyson and following him closely for years on social media, he still manages to give you a completely new perspective on things
Neil is a great educator. Not only he can explain complex phenomena in just few sentences, but he also has a way to inspire people - and for that I consider him a genius
Amazing view points on life in general!
All these people complaining don't see that Larry is most likely on a time constraint, and is trying to fit all these questions into a short video. This isn't an hour long sit down talk, none of you could've done better.
Thank you for the great interview and for recording a great moment between two amazing americans.
Neil is a credit to humanity. We need more celebrities that display his intelligence and class. Imagine our societies if we did more to celebrate people like him.
Larry, this is a great interview. Thank you.
Neil DeGrasse Tyson converses with re-animated corpse Larry King
I love Neil deGrasse Tyson's voice, its so soothing.
I concur with a lot of the other comments here, I could listen to Neil Talk all day! just fascinating to listen to! AMAZING!!!
5:33 WTF Larry!! they were talking about ties and suddenly asks him about his family ??!! Weirdo
+Hossam Balouiri family ties....Ooooooh!!!!
I see what you did there
+Melchi Zedeq Thats a good one lol
This man is perhaps the only man capable of reviving America's scientific and innovative drive. The world needs more men like him.
King looks SO disinterested in one of the most interesting guests he might have ever had on. He didn't even sound like he reacted to anything Neil said! I know I'm a fan and all, but I think anyone else would at least give a nodding gesture or some chuckle at those answers. Honestly, that was painful to watch.
Yeah, came from an Akon interview to this, and I must say he let Tyson down/didn't do him justice. Maybe they just didn't click or he was having a bad day though.
lockeforeer
Just seems like a lot of apathy towards the subject material which is annoying because it's one of the most amazing topics to ever discuss.
Absolutely loved what he said about role models. Genius.
i enjoy him.
i enjoy that he truly does not put on anything that isn't him.
most would call him a nerd - while at the same time respect him for it.
nice to see.
I could listen to him talk forever!
Glad to hear he's a fellow bluesman
Neil deGrasse Tyson: Where are the Asteroids? they're behind Uranus xD
LK was just going through the motions. 5:44 my left eye lid started to twitch.
I liked Neil.... Then I learn he likes FOUNTAIN pens and now I LOVE him! What a classy guy! Ladies of the world, let me say that us men do sometimes aspire to more. I LOVE a fountain pen.
What a thought provoking, intelligent human being...
I envy people that know what they wanna do with their lives. i am 30 years old and don't know what to do.
+Karakla08 try new things, eventually you'll find it
+Karakla08 Write some lists. Things you can do, things you can't do, things you have done before, things you've never done before, personal interests and core beliefs/values/attributes. Get to know yourself and something might pop up :)
+Karakla08 completely relatable.
+Karakla08 you're not the only one
Take up judo.
Neil tysons voice is music to my ears
i love how so many times after he would say something, he would look at the camera and give a little smirk, like "yeah..think about THAT shit" hahaha
whether you're 10 or 40yrs old, u cant help but be inspired when u hear him speak
4:52 Neil knows he nailed the sentence..looks into the camera like "yeah, im good"
I am so besotted with everything about Neil
Thanks for this interest in my interview -- the last 7 minutes of a longer 30 min conversation, posted separately. I knew in advance of Larry KIng's "cutoff" style. It's a purposeful tactic to keep conversations in motion. That's what accounts for some of the energy at the end of my answers - knowing that if I got loud and animated he'd be less likely to interrupt at that moment. I gave all of each answer that I wanted, so no harm, no foul. And yes, those were real NYC street sirens. -NDTyson
I don't get why so many have a problem with larry king. It felt like two guys having a conversation. Also I just noticed Tyson himself posted about this interview and was perfectly okay with Larry. I thought Tyson, who I love, got his point across and his post confirms that very point. I think sometimes we try to hard to find fault with people.
6:15- 6:51
Love Dr. Tyson, he talks in euphemisms and has such a novelist mindset. I've recently read his Death by Black Hole book and it is pretty good.
totally agree w/him about role models
That last piece of advice was so very important! :)
I love these guys.....
I lost it when LK asked about Neil's son, "Is he interested in..." [funny gesture at the sky]
this guy said Buddy Guy! my pops used to play his tunes for me when i was like 5 years old . I forgot all about that
I was listening to Dr. Tyson on MPR yesterday, and was struck by what would his wife be like.... Also that he would be a wonderful addition to a dinner party!
One of the most inspiring personalities alive right now. When I will look back on my life in 50 years, there will be at least these three names that deeply impacted my way of critical thinking and approaching life: Christopher Hitchens, Adam Carolla and Neil deGrasse Tyson.
He has the ability to explain very complex scientific concepts in a clear and entertaining fashion. Check out some of his videos here on youtube.
Damn, if not for that grumpy, bored, disinterested dude being forced to ask questions, this would've been an amazing interview.
dodoz44 nah Larry was interested
That's just how Larry King is, I think. I do not think he was bored or uninterested.
Also, keep in mind he was already 80 when this was filmed. Advanced age is bound to have some effect on expression, voice, etc...
Larry getting old.
Yeah, so true. Not engaging Neil at all and interrupting him mid-answer, even.
i can listen to this man talking for hours... i do sometimes actually... thats what youtube does really!
That last statement Neil answered is so true
Neil is more than just a scientist. He's also an Artist. Just look at his words, his voice! Don't they seem outright poetic, passionate to you? And I think a lot of people swear by how much his words move them.
Absoultly amazing earthling
Man, this guy can make anything sound deep.
thankyou larry king for giving us this
He's absolutely amazing.
Larry is a Smart man, and after a long time he interviewed someone like him. Insane convo.
Larry must have jizzed
He wore that same vest (or one just like it) when he gave a forum at my university!
That laugh at "your favorite space pun" XD
The man impresses me more and more as a human being. I know he's skeptical about role models but if kids want one, well there he is.
Neil is one of those guys that really love their job
God bless this guy!
In that vein: Neil is my role model for communicating science with passion. I do not care if I ever find out he does drugs or other controversial stuff.
Neil has the gift of the gab.
i could listen to this guy talk all day, and probably not understand a quarter of what he said.
Neil deGrasse Tyson is so amazing. He is so smart and nice
love the sirens in the backround noise of sirens. great interview
This is amazing. I love both of these people.
I Love his comment on haikus
Babe, you're awesome and I love you :* ❤️
I love this interview :-) well done!
"I still tear up in the simplest boy meets girl"
and I'm here like "I feel you bruh"
i really like what he said about role models
