Neil deGrasse Tyson is a laudable successor of Carl Sagan in taking up the baton to popularize science in America today. Dr. Tyson has, through his enthusiasm and powerful convictions, inspired me to learn more about our cosmos. Speaking of the cosmos, his reboot of the Cosmos TV show is the best thing on TV right now. The very first episode in 1980 with Carl Sagan opened on a shoreline cliff and Dr. Tyson opened his first episode on the very same cliff which I took to be a fine homage to his predecessor and former mentor.
Earth's rotational axis is about 23.5 degrees which means it is tilted that amount. That is how we get seasons as we travel around the sun. It is not straight up so while the speed of, as he says New York at it's latitude is about 800mph, the speed at your latitude on the poles would be less than that but, not zero so hold on to your snickers...
@@FATillery Hmmm... But there would still be 2 spots somewhere on the planet where's the current axis, right? Would you spin around if you stood in that place? ;>
@@ThatMadCat No. If you stood on the extreme most northern point of the Earth, you actually would be leaning because of the rotational axis. It is like the spinning top that Mr. deGrass Tyson mentioned. Yes there is a center point on that top but it's rotational axis carries that center point in the same number of degrees as the top is rotating which in the case of Earth is 23.5. This is a difficult concept to see without a physical example but in the end, there is not 'true' top of the Earth where you would not be affected by the rotational axis of 23.5 degrees. Some planets like Mars can have a rotational axis that extends 30 or more degrees. Uranus has an almost 90 degree rotational axis and it looks like it is rotating on it's side. I do not know how to demonstrate it with words but if you study the subject and hopefully some videos, perhaps you would understand.
@@ThatMadCat Let's just hope the Earth does not stop spinning at least not quickly. If it did so slowly over a period of decades or more, we would survive and adapt.

Maybe for high school... in uni you need specialists in your domain and he is nowhere near that level specifically in geophysics (magnetic poles do flip)
I think there was a misunderstanding about the 'pole switching/shifting'. I think the questioner was asking about the magnetic poles switching, i.e. the magnetic field of the earth changing so that compasses point south instead of north. The magnetic field of the earth does vary over time, such that magnetic north 'wanders' across the surface of the earth. In recent decades it has wandered north by north-west across the northern islands of Canada, and is currently very near to true north, but slightly towards Alaska. From geological evidence, we can also show that the magnetic north pole was previously near the true south pole, and that magnetic poles regularly 'flip', with the magnetic field of the earth changing relatively rapidly from one stable state to another.
***** Yes... that's what I'm saying. Tyson misunderstood the question because he thought the claims was that the matter of the earth flipped from north to south. My point was that flipping usually refers to the magnetic field, not the matter at the surface. Furthermore, It's tempting to think of the magnetic poles as antipodes, skewering the earth down the middle, and pointing all compasses toward magnetic north , but actually the poles move semi-independently of one another, and the field is rather more chaotic that that. Most models of pole-shifting suggest that the earth becomes multi-polar for a while, while the transition from one stable state to another occurs.
"we can also show that the magnetic north pole was previously near the true south pole" I don't know what you meant exactly, but the magnetic north pole is *currently* on the side of the geographic south (the 'north' needle of a compass points towards the magnetic south).
I have new respect for Larry King for interviewing my Idol. Neil Degrasse Tyson is by far the ultimate role model for children and adults. I have yet to discover another human being who has his combination of intelligence, charisma and witty sense of humor.
We need more teachers like him. He would be like LeBron of the teacher world. We need to make teaching a sport, so that qualified people actually want to be teachers. Lol.
@Adam Borucki I figure if it needed to spin the other way it would have to stop for a second or 2. How that would happen? I guess some kind of magnetic gravitational anomaly. Why it happened? Idk
@Adam Borucki I thought you were asking me to use my imagination. The definition of anomaly is something that deviates from the norm. So the earth needing to spin the opposite direction wouldn't be normal. And if you spin yourself around and think to spin the other direction, You would have to stop for at least a second and then force yourself the opposite way.
Love watching this man talk about basically anything. Someone like this should be in the council of leaders for planet Earth once the concept of countries has been made obsolete.
actually the user question was: "what would happen if the earth stopped rotating for a second." no magnetic poles or any flipping were part of the question which got answered quite satisfactory, sir.
Just wished we had more teachers like him just think of all the amazing things kid's could do if they had more teachers like him in the class room . love this man
Here's a fun fact: Even if you were buckled down, the wind moving upwards of 800mph will rip you from wherever you're strapped to right onto that wall over there.
My Geology teacher told us the poles have shifted and will shift again because of iron things found in rocks that point South and North. What should I do? 😢
Your geology teacher is probably talking about Magnetic poles hence he talked about the core of the earth that influences the magnetic fields of earth. Where as Neil is talking about the geographical N and S poles.
In America when someone says "north pole" and "south pole" they generally are referring to the geographic north and south pole like when they talk about Santa living in the "north pole" . Generally in America unless stating specifically "magnetic north pole" it is generally understood as the land of Santa. I'm from Australia we don't say south pole/north pole we say antarctic and arctic and sometimes "north pole", personally I understood the question to be about magnetism but since NDT is American he deciphered the question differently. Regardless the question should have been more specific.
Not exactly. Lol. He assumed people were talking about the "flipping of the poles" In the geographical sense because it was a common misunderstanding that had recently been relevant.
So in an ideal school: -Neil would be the physics teacher -Bill Bailey would be the music teacher -Tom Scott would teach English/Computer Science Any other suggestions?
As for the last question...he obviously meant "when will the geomagnetic poles flip?" (These reversals of the geomagnetic poles leave a record in rocks that are of value to paleomagnetists in calculating geomagnetic fields in the past.) The correct answer is : It flips at irregular intervals averaging several hundred thousand years, the Earth's field reverses and the North and South Magnetic Poles relatively abruptly switch places. It could happen at any time. We just can't predict when. I am kind of shocked that Neil didn't explain this. (No offense)
That's probably a subject that you've spent a special amount of time researching, I'm sure if he took you into his field of research then you would be as equally relatively clueless, in fact probably more unless you hold a doctorate yourself.
Charles Lyell The question was literally "When can we expect the north pole and south pole to shift", while the wording could technically be taken either way, it doesn't take a genius to realize they are referring to the magnetic poles... you know, the poles that people _are_ actually saying will shift...
I remember when Neil talked about what it would look like if extra terrestrials. He said the natural order would take place whenever superior beings came into contact with inferior ones, in an environment attractive to the superior. That they would wipe us out. Conquer us. Made me think of what happened when Europeans explorers and settlers encountered the Native Americans in North America. Same thing huh? Natural order of things.
I love to listen to Neil's commentaries.... I don't understand what he's talking about, I just like to hear him giving his explanation on just about any topic...🤔😀😁👍
I think the questioner didn't know how to properly frame the question. The question asked about poles "flipping" but I believe what was meant was not about the axial poles flipping, but the magnetic poles reversing in a phenomenon known as geomagnetic reversal, which does occur and has been documented by geologists. www.universetoday.com/43824/geomagnetic-reversal/
I just don't understand why NDT is nationalistic about scientific achievement. Humans made CERN. We're all human. That's all we need. Why does it matter if the Europeans made it?
Well the US collider was going to be much larger and more powerful, and was well into its construction before Congress killed the project. So I can understand why people would be pissed about that. Sure we ended up with CERN, but the physics world would have been further ahead had the American collider actually been built. Higgs boson would have been old news years ago.
It matters because they could do better. As an american scientist, driven by american scientific facilities he would naturally have the agenda to improve them. I can understand his disappointment, because USA seem to be deteriorating in that matter.
Figure out the mass to inertia of the Earth's rotation and the planet actually stopping for a second is a literal impossibility, (apart from being struck by a celestial object the same size and mass as it is).
You could do the calculations he mentioned on a piece of paper. Newton calculated the speed and mass/size of celestial objects orbiting the Sun hundreds of years before we could actually prove it with our telescopes, and guess what? He was right...well, slightly off because of his understanding of gravity, but so slight it didn't matter. Literally, what do you think, these scientists are just making it up as they go along?
I think the question re the poles flipping was really asking about the north and south magnetic poles, not the poles of rotation. And this is a very relevant question given the increased rate of the migration of the magnetic poles over the last few years. The magnetic poles have flipped many times, and it would be interesting to understand when that might occur, although I gather that no one knows the timing. More importantly is the question of what effect this is going to have on our high tech civilization, our health and the environment
Kevin Rogan yeah I thought that’s what the question was asking too and when he said they don’t flip I was very confused because I was almost positive there was evidence of the poles flipping in the geological record

Sorry to break it to ya but Knowledge != Intelligence.
The person who asked about the poles was really probably talking about the magnetic field flip.
I think so, too. I wonder if Tyson was just being stubborn because the questioner didn't specify...
I'm pretty sure he ment that. And magnetic poles are known to have flipped few times already in the past. I don't remember the numbers, but I think the last one was long ago enough that the next one could be pretty soon.
I came looking for this comment. Thank you
I'm really glad you pointed that out. When I was watching him I was just thinking, "I'm not as smart you, but I'm pretty sure they do flip."
That's part of the problem, someone talked about the magnetic poles flipping, and people thought the actual poles flipped
If he was my teacher... I would be a scientist instead of an accountant lol
Man. I'm studying accounting too hahaha. Same here LOL
When Neil explains science on a not-barely highschool level, the subject is as dry as any other professor would teach. Explaining a stopping earth and it's effect isn't studying the sciences. It's like a trailer with all the cool scene's in the movie already present.

Most surprising thing in the physics world is the fact that some do not find it fascinating.
Most people can not truly grasp it or have developed different interests from childhood. Average physics major in US has 125+ IQ. People of average intelligence settle for simpler journeys in life. I think the same thing some times but understand that naturally society will structurize itself mostly based on the interests and talents of individuals.
Most intelligent people are not interested in lies.
Neil DeGrasse Tyson for President!!!
President is a dumb people's job.
the position of president is not dumb just the people playing the roll as of late. We need smarter people that want to change the world for the better, not ones that just want to make there bank rolls bigger. The position of president should be a civil duty working for the interest of the people not there own personal interest & gains.
I think he'd have a decent chance of winning. Not sure how much he could acomplish though as president.

"I love tops."
I find this endearing and delightful.
Neil just makes everything sound so much more simpler than any Physics teacher ever made it sound.
What if I was on the North or South Pole? :>
@@FATillery I think I get it, thanks for the lesson, haha.
@@ThatMadCat Let's just hope the Earth does not stop spinning at least not quickly. If it did so slowly over a period of decades or more, we would survive and adapt.
I love how enthusiastic Tyson is about science, its really contagious.

Yup
This is what happens when you send an astrophysicist to do a paeleomagnetist's job!
;-p
I think he misunderstood the question too. We discussed the magnetic field changing in one of my advanced geology classes when I was an undergrad.
"we can also show that the magnetic north pole was previously near the true south pole"
I don't know what you meant exactly, but the magnetic north pole is *currently* on the side of the geographic south (the 'north' needle of a compass points towards the magnetic south).
I have new respect for Larry King for interviewing my Idol. Neil Degrasse Tyson is by far the ultimate role model for children and adults. I have yet to discover another human being who has his combination of intelligence, charisma and witty sense of humor.

@Adam Borucki nothing......it just stopped.
@Adam Borucki how can the earth stop?
Nothing doesn't exsist and has no physical traits.
Someone like this should be in the council of leaders for planet Earth once the concept of countries has been made obsolete.
the talk was about magnetic poles flipping not the earth flipping, the guy who asked forgot to mention the most important word

Niels enthusiasm for physics is what drives me to want to be an astrophysicist

Not if all the junk went flying out the window. Result!
Never trust geologists.
But in all seriousness the magnetic shift isn't what he was talking about.
simes1119 thank you I was about to sue my Geology teacher :)

The question was about Earth poles and not magnetic Earth poles.
Charles Lyell
The question was literally "When can we expect the north pole and south pole to shift", while the wording could technically be taken either way, it doesn't take a genius to realize they are referring to the magnetic poles... you know, the poles that people _are_ actually saying will shift...
Nope
MegaSkills9 yeah I thought the same thing. Neil gave the literal answer, but the question asker was probably wondering about the magnetic poles

I love to listen to Neil's commentaries.... I don't understand what he's talking about, I just like to hear him giving his explanation on just about any topic...🤔😀😁👍
NDT: A lot of talk of pole shifting
King: I love tops
I think the questioner didn't know how to properly frame the question.
The question asked about poles "flipping" but I believe what was meant was not about the axial poles flipping, but the magnetic poles reversing in a phenomenon known as geomagnetic reversal, which does occur and has been documented by geologists.
www.universetoday.com/43824/geomagnetic-reversal/
On women, yes.
I think his point was America is less competent now compared to before.

and the planet actually stopping for a second is a
literal impossibility, (apart from being struck by a
celestial object the same size and mass as it is).
I'm pretty sure we have all the scientific data to accurately simulate this on any number of super computers..So.. Literally not impossible.

+lostn65 I feel like I have. lol. Been watching one clip after another. Love this man!
