How to Fix an Etiolated Cactus with Plant Surgery

  • We have had an extremely late spring and some of my cacti are not happy. I’m afraid I put my plants outside too early, and my poor Chamaelobivia experienced cold damage. It was also etiolated from winter conditions over the past months. I felt like surgery was my only option to save it.

    no matter how etiolated stupid looking a cactus winds up I figure you can always just flop it on its side right in the potting mix and just let it pup in that position .... my neighbors gave me some cuttings and some I could not tell top from bottom and so I just "logged" those right in the dirt outdoors.....two years later there is like 10 tall pups...well approaching more full sized columns now actually that "pups" don't really describe these days! ....I did not expect them to do THAT well! No babying whatsoever!

    Hello. I watched this video a while ago and today I came back to it because I have the same cactus in the same condition I do not know why. I live in a apt with no balcony in south florida.
    So today I added water and placed the cactus in the shadow far from the window. I will wait a bit to see how it reacts and if nothing good happens I will follow your video.
    Ahhh I have to buy rice pudding and cinnamon.
    Tks.
    PS is there a video about this cactus a little time later???

      It may have been featured in a general plant update video at a later date. It was awhile ago, I do think it made pups after surgery, but then succumbed to mealy bugs. I can recommend the video Cactus Caffeine made on how to prevent this type of growth, having to do with what time of year you fertilize the cactus. Thanks for watching good luck with your plant! 🌵🌵🌵😀😀

    i bought a few of these at my local Lowe's, and they all were etiolated as well. they were sitting under shade inside a shelf with other succulents and small cacti. they look very similar to yours. but i kind of like the weird look. would it be alright if i were to leave the etiolated cacti as is? and will it get thicker if given more sun?

    • @PleasantPrickles
      @PleasantPrickles  6 років тому +3

      meversusthesea As long as the top is still firm and not mushy, I think it’s fine to leave it, if you like it! I have another type of cactus that became stretched out and I did not do surgery. Since the top was flopped over and growing downwards the cactus grew new pups all over which may also happen to yours. A lot of times cacti will find a way to keep growing one way or another. However, the plant in this video looks amazing now with four pups that popped out on top. I will make sure to highlight it on my next plant tour! 🌵😀

      Pleasant Prickles i forgot to ask, how long did it take for the pups to grow from the cut ends?? by the way i ended up snipping off the etiolated parts from my lobivia since they were feeling soft.

    Did it survive? I did the same thing with my cactus, put it outside too early and it's one of the stems is starting to droop, maybe over watered and it got cold, one stem fell over, I'm hoping it will survive, any tips would be appreciated it's about a meter tall and there's 4 spems the biggest of which is suffered the worst

    Thanks, I have two that stayed with my parents for six years while I was living outdoors before coming to stay in my new apartment 3 years ago and they have a warped shape. The one of the same sp as in the video is also narrowed but not floppy so I think I'll do this.
    I guess I should wait until the spring? I'm also planning to repot so maybe do that first.

    • @PleasantPrickles

      Perhaps it’s planted too shallow and needs more soil around the base? Also, cacti do much better in high light conditions, so make sure it’s in a bright spot. Good luck! 🌵🌵🌵🌵😀

      I have the same problem, my cacti was fine when bought (2021) but during last year it etiolated really bad at the middle; now it has proper light but the upper half is very thick and crooked to the right, although it's a small cacti it looks like in some time it might break because of that aa

    What if you just have a healthy cactus that is overgrown? Can you prune it and replant the part that you cut off?

    • @PleasantPrickles
      @PleasantPrickles  Рік тому

      Yes definitely, I’ve just recently done that to some of my cacti. You have to let the cut end heal over for a few days to a week or so. After you cut it and the mother plant, sprinkle the cut ends with cinnamon for an anti fungal. After you’ re satisfied that it has calloused over on the cut end, put it into to dry soil and the cutting should root. Water a couple of weeks later. Good luck! Thanks for watching! 🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵😃
