    I have that problem every peak of the summer here. Some of my cactus stretch when exposed to sun at extremely hot temperatures. So you are definitely right Lyn in saying it is not always caused by lack of light. I have lots of examples. That is why I do not fertilize anymore during summer here. Thanks for explaining it well. 🙂 Cheers from Las Vegas! 🌵☕️

      So very true Ana :-D and I remember when this happened to you too in Summer, and you have the most perfect of conditions for cacti and this still can happen with extremely hot temperatures, its amazing how challenging it can be for all of us with growing cacti and we are all in different areas of the world, but its the challenge that makes it exciting haha :-D thanks so much Ana for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and CAFFEINE and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle to Las Vegas for a fantastic Sunday today XXXX

    Can I use the etoliated part (4in, 10.1 cm) or top portion where its gets bigger (3in 7.6 cm) for for cuttings? I thought about laying it on its side..

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  8 місяців тому +1

      Hi, yes you can still propagate from the etiolated parts if you lay the cuttings on their sides like a log, the roots will come from under the cuttings and the new growth will shoot from the areoles and grow normal if given plenty of light, over time the cuttings will be less visible as the new growth and pads take over, happy propagating and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX

    Oh wow i KNEW that our sudden heat waves that we been having, caused my cactus to Etiolate! Because it’s in full all day sun. But it still stretched for some odd reason.
    But we have been having sudden 3 day heat waves since June! It’ll go 32°C to 43°C the next day and then it’ll drop back down to 29°C a couple days after. Thank you for the video! Lovely information! I appreciate it very much

      The weather has been crazy hot here in Ireland too, and I have noticed that Cacti tend to suddenly put on a fast growth spirt in very high temps, and cacti can etiolate even in full sun, last week it was 40c and now its just 16c this week, So happy you enjoyed the info and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Tuesday XXXX

Luckily I’ve had very few plants etiolate, but a couple have suffered a little this autumn and winter with hardly no sunlight for weeks on end, one of my Sulcorebutia looks like a wine bottle lol. My cactus is having the etiolation problem but it sit on my east facing screened patio and gets direct sun light in the mornings for 3 to 4 hours.... but it just shot up all the new growth and after I fertilized for the first time since getting it in 1 year.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Jennifer, so sorry to hear that you are having this happen on your Cactus, sometimes a good fertilising can give cacti a bit of growth spurt and can cause them to grow too fast especially in warm weather, its possible that your cactus may even out its growth over the coming weeks but if not you may be able to prune off any of the growth that stays etiolated, thanks so much for watching and for your wonderful comment and have a fantastic weekend ahead XXXX

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  2 роки тому

      Hi there, this has happened to some of my Opuntia prickly pear cacti when I used to overwinter them in a spare room, I prune any of mine in the Spring that have started to grow thin at the top, keeping them dry and cool if possible over the Winter will help to prevent them from stretching out but it can be difficult if overwintered indoors in a warm house for Winter, but you can prune off the thinner growth and the new pads or growth will grow normal, but if you can overwinter them cool and dry with no watering and ideally in a bright position for winter, then this will help to stop them from growing thin at the top during the Winter months, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX
